You either have a faulty gauge or you connected it like an ammeter in series with something pulling a lot of amps. Volt meters must always be connected across a circuit and not as part of a circuit.
There will be a couple of terminals on the back of the gauge that are marked -ve and +ve. The -ve just goes to a good earth. The +ve goes to any good 12 volt power source like the accessory terminal on the fusebox or the 12 volt terminal on the ignition switch. Any 12 volt source will do that is not in series with anything.
