How can I tell difinitively if my car is supposed to have the flip top gas cap, or the standard twist on?

The gas cap won't appear on the fender tag - only the build sheet. In 70, 71 and 72 all JS Challengers were supposed to get the flip top as were the JH23J's. I believe the JH23H's with the A66 option code got them as well, although it isn't listed with the options in the package so I cannot be certain. Otherwise, the twist cap should be on the car. In 73 and 74 it should have come with the Rallye package.

The J46 Flip Top cap was optional on the R/T (JS). Mine doesn't have it.

Ken, J46 indicates "Gas Cap, Locking" according to the 1970 Dodge Models and Prices book. It cost the grand sum of $4.40 in those days. Try touching one of those for that figure now.

Right, the flip top cap had a locking cap under it. The standard one was the twist off cap like on mine and the Challenger R/T in the original Vanishing Point movie. If you had J46 you got the flip top and the locking cap. That's the one thing on my car that I wish it had new. Okay that and a sunroof and a Hemi. ;)

Chrome locking gas (petrol) caps used to be very popular here in the 70's & 80's and some auto parts shops still stock them. I'm going to see if I can find one to fit the flip-top type inlet (not that I need one now that Dave kindly provided me with a screw-on one). If I do find one to suit the filler neck, I'll let everyone know.

That is confusing Ken. It sounds like you are saying that all the flip-top caps had a locking cap under. That is of course far from the truth. Very few had the locking cap and I have never in fact even seen one!

This weekend just gone, while I was in the "big smoke" (city) I heard about an "all American" combined car clubs cruise and went to the rally point. I met the owners of 3 challengers, one of whom had a locking gas cap under his flip-top. He bought the item only the day before at a parts store in Perth and it fitted like a glove. Paid A$29.95 and said there were plenty available. His car was originally fitted with the painted screw-on cap, but it was stolen, so he fitted the flip-top and had been looking for someting suitable for the inner cap. If anyone's interested in one, let me know.

I think that Ken means is that you got a locking gas cap (under the flip-top), if you ordered the J46 package. This option was available between 1969 and 1971.

My '71 has a fliptop with locking cap underneath,and that's defenitly original on my car. In fact the locking cap is so worn out that I can take it out without the key

I was shown a flip-top gas cap from an Australian Charger last weekend. They are different to the chally, inasmuch as the flip part of the cap has an inner rubber seal, that is spring loaded and mates with the fuel filler neck. A good idea I thought and probably a better design too. They are identical to look at from the outside too.

I used to have one of those Chargers Roger and I agree it is a better cap. It also had something in the filler neck to stop you putting a rubber hose down there to steal the petrol.

I have one of these caps and went to fit it but it was to small in diameter,does something sit inbetween the cap and the body.does anyone have a good photo or diagram of this.

Dave I'm inclined to agree with the security thing. At current prices of fuel, it's an expensive and easy item to steal and the flip-top cap makes it all the easier to pinch. I believe you can buy a metal coil/spring that fits neatly in the filler neck to avoid this happening.

Good question Shawn. I never knew until last weekend, that there were more than one type around. This may have something to do with the fact some of us have locking caps and other's don't - who knows????

thanks Roger but I don't think it'll work, you see the whole cap fit inside the four screw holes.but i'll check it out again may have had one to many VB's (beer) that day,

While browsing a couple of parts sites in the US I came upon a description for a flip-top cap and the inner rubber seal we spoke of earlier in this post. Apparently you can buy this to suit your flip-top cap as described below. The supplier is Laysons Restorations www.laysons.com This might help those of you in need of a sealer or cap to suit the inside filler neck.

One of the most eye-catching styling elements Chrysler used on 1967-71 A and B-Body muscle cars was the flip-top fuel cap. These caps gave the cars a bit of "stock car" styling for the street. Not a big fan on the flip top gas lid but it is safeer than having some little punk run off with the lid!! :x

Is it true, what this ebay seller says, that ´70-´71 Challengers with flip-top gas caps used these kind of anti-theft screws? :?

I always understood the anti-theft screws were available but I have never seen any fitted on Challengers. Not that I go around looking that much but on the rare occasion when I have noticed I have always seen the Phillips head screws.

I have seen the theft proof screws on a-body Barracudas, but my T/A had phillips head screws.

One more thing for me to start checking on low milage cars that I run accross. ;-)

I think that the theft proof screws were available from the dealer only and not offered as factory on the challengers. ALL chaallenger flip tops J46 were of the locking type with a seperate locking cap to fit under the flip top.
The one shown is for a 1970 ONLY ,1971 used a VENTED locking cap. Also there was a black rubber cup that attached to the top of the flop top , which mated to the locking cap in order to keep out moisture, dust and debris. These usually fell of with the first year of ownership during refuling.

Almost 10 years later... I equipped my Challenger with an aftermarket locking fuel cap from Stant (not original, but locking) and as I have a picture of a cap with the rubber, I'm feeling, that I need the rubber now. I think it gives a bit pressure on the locking cap.

If anyone is still interested I can attach images for comparison.

Some bad info early on in the thread too. The flip top cap was optional in 70 and 71. It was not available after 71.
