Engine code

My engine block is stamped "G440" on the top line. On the bottom line the date is stamped,"5 15 71" and way over on the same line as the date, in the far bottom right corner there is a "C" stamped. I was told the motor came out of a 1971 Chrysler New Yorker. Does this "C" stand for Chrysler? or Commando?

I think the 'G440' just means it is a 1971 440 engine. Sometimes there is a letter after the 440 that tells you the body type. Maybe that is what that 'C' is that you see in the bottom right. In other words a C-body which is what the 1965-1978 New Yorker was.

The date is the actual date the engine was built.
