I'm building a 3 inch exhaust system for my -70 Challenger R/T 440 and want to finish off with 4 rengtangular tips looking as close as possible to original. Anyone of you guys built your own tips?. Rob, you indicate in one post discussing how far the tips should stick out that you have made yours. Right? Anyway, I would appreciate any tip from someone who have built their own. Material (stainless steel?), material thickness?, where to find starting material (stainless steel bars of the right dimensions (60x100mm) are to thick and cost a fortune), how to design the transition to the 3 inch tube whithout having a bottleneck for the exhausts? etc. etc. any info appreciated. I hammered the end of a three inch section into a rectangle and welded on a pair of repro tips that I cut a section of the back off.

A guy I know had some made in stainless steel and may be able to get you a pair or give you the dimentions. His name is Jason Gilmore and you can e-mail him at jason@mopar.uk.net

Dave! Where did you find repro tips of the right dimensions? Were they repro tips made for R/T Challenger or just general fancy repro tips? If tips specially made for R/T Challenger, what did you pay for them and where did you get them. Thanks! / Lars

Places like Year One sell the repro tips. Just look at their web site. They sell them for $265 a pair. Sounds expensive for reproductions? Well the new Chrysler nos tips are $225 EACH!

I actually welded mine to the back of a pair of 3" 'cherry bomb' type mufflers. I am not saying you should do this but it sorted a problem I had in my case. I simply nipped the 3 inch end of the muffler in a vise and then using a block of wood as a former I hammered it into a rectangle that was the right size to fit on the exhaust tip. The back of the exhaust tip I then cut off so that the muffler fitted exactly the hole.

I have just taken them off the car to give them a coat of paint. I will see if I can get hold of a digital camera and take a photo.

This is what I did to my tips. I found that the 3" system into two warlock mufflers was not bringing the noise level down enough so I had these mufflers custom made. They do standard widths and just cut them to length.

However I got my measurements wrong so they were a bit too long. The easiest way out of this was to weld the tips directly onto the end.

Just to give you an idea of scale here is one stood next to a big Kirby vacuum cleaner.



Looking in the end you can see the deflector plate. It is just an angled bit of steel plate.



This last one shows how I shaped the 3 inch outlet from the exhaust to fit onto the back of the tip after cutting off the standard size inlet pipe and opening the hole up.

Lars, I looked all around for new or repro square tips and gave up in the end. I settled for 3" round stainless pipe, and had the exhaust fabricator make 2 dual tips. They look very good and all the MOPAR owners that have seen them say they look better than the originals. The exhaust system is a twin 2.1/2" steel from Hooker Super Comp headers thru one Turbo stainless muffler on each side, ending in the twin 3" tips. It sounds great and can be either mellow or bellow, depending on the amount of gas pedal used. I will post a picture if I can work out how to do it.
