Two-tone Challengers

Postby Jim Wilson (Jim) » 19 Apr 2002 15:29

I’m interested in any information on Challengers (or Cuda’s) with the code V02 on the fender tag. I want to know about any V02 ‘E’ body cars.I am particularly interested in JS23 and BS23 cars.

If V02 appears on your fender tag. This indicates that the car was originally ordered with 2-tone paint. The upper body colour (I’m English so you must excuse my spelling) will cover the same area as a vinyl, separated from the lower body colour by the same trim a vinyl top uses.

There were 100 V02 BS23 Cuda’s built in the 1970 model year. So far I know of only three of them:

TX9 black with EW1 white top
EB5 blue with TX9 black top
FC7 purple with EW1 white top

I have no figures for Challengers. I haven’t yet heard of any V02 Challengers, so any information will be gratefully received.

A lot of V02 cars may have been repainted all body colour, or perhaps have a vinyl fitted. Maybe you don’t know you have a rare 2-tone car. Please check your fender tag and let me know if you find V02. The tag will also state upper and lower body colours.

2-tone musclecars are rare indeed! ‘Hope we find some of these rare beasts.

Have you visited www.aarta.com lately? Check out the rarities-section. There are some facts about V02 T/A:s there.

Thanks for that Christer. If there are a couple of V02 T/A's, i reckon there must be some V02 R/T's. Anyone know of any????

Jim,

I will post the numbers for V02 Challengers. By the way www.aarta.com is my website. I thought I had told you about the T/As, but you were only interested in Hemi cars. I see your interest has expanded.

My copy of the Chrysler numbers is pretty bad in spots so I had to try as hard as I could to read the Challenger V02 numbers for R/Ts. It looks like 124. For Challengers and T/As the total is 762. Remember none of these figures including the 100 for 'Cudas is exact. The actual totals could be off either way by a few.

Gentle I think I have the 70 Challenger that seems to be so elusive. It has the V02 code with EW1 and FK5 paint codes also.

Here is the entire fender tag

Y07 EN1
G33 L31 M21 R11 V02 V7W
EW1 A01 A04 C16 C55 G31
FK5 H6K4 000 B14 C00612
E61 D32 JH23 L0B 191044

The strange thing is that is came with vinyl top which I believe to be original, so I cannot figure out why V1X is not in the fender tag.

Also I would like to be able to find out how many of these EXACT cars were produced. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

BTW - The ol' girl is still in Canada

Thanks in advance,

Regards,

Is there any evidence of paint under the vinyl top? If it was factory fitted there would be nothing but a primer over bare metal under there. If you see any white paint under the edges then it was fitted later by the dealer or first owner. I would restore it to the painted top as this is a very rare option.

Unfortunately we are in the middle of restoration.

The body has been painted back to original color and there is already a new vinyl top on. The bumpers have been re-chromed and will be installed today. I am going to take a few pics today and will try and post one for all the world to see.

The 383 motor has been completely rebuilt even though it only had 37,000 original miles on it. It is also ready for install.

We should be able to find the build sheet for this today hopefully also.

We are going to get in contact with the original owner's brother also as the as the owner has past on a few years ago to see what if the car had a painted top originally.

This car sat for many years waiting for us and I would like to paint the roof also. I will explain to Glen how rare this option is and see if I can get him to take off the viynl roof.

I will talk to the body shop people today as they were the ones who removed the vinyl to see if there was indeed white paint underneath or just primer.

This is getting to be too much fun. A man should actually try to work for a living instead of concentrating all his time to this...LOL

Chrysler did not keep records of color combinations used for V02 cars, so the information as to how many FK5/EW1 cars were made does not exist.

The information I have from Daimler/Chrysler under the hading of "Paint - 2 tone" is in percentages of production for 1970, so here it is:
Deputy 6 cyl: 1.9%
Deputy 8 cyl: 3.9%
Deputy total: 2.7%
JH23 6 cyl: 2.8%
JH23 8 cyl: 2.0%
JH23 Total: 2.2%
JH27 : 0%
JH29 : 0%
All JH 6 cyl: 2.6%
All JH 8 cyl: 1.7%
All JH Total: 1.8%
JS23 8 cyl: 0.9%
JS27 8 cyl: 0%
JS29 8 cyl: 0%
All JS Total: 0.7%
All Challenger 6 cyl total: 2.5%
All Challenger 8 cyl total: 1.4%
All Challenger total: 1.6%

I got these figures when I was tracking down the rarity of the 999 paint code on an R/T SE. I was told by the D/C rep I spoke with was that these were figures kept by the Chryler or Dodge sales department to track option popularity and he was kind enough to send me a copy of the print-out.

You boys are just to good!!

Thanks for taking the time to help me in my endevours.

We have not yet got around to looking for the build sheet, but I did speak with the body shop guys and they said it indeed did have the white paint under the vinyl roof!!! We also spoke to the owners brother and he said the car came with a vinyl roof originally when purchased, so on that assumption I would believe it must have been the dealer who put it on.

Still trying to talk the boss into putting the car back to the original fender tag codes.

Thanks again everyone!!

Since starting this thread i have had a lot of problems with my computer. Now i have it fixed once and for all i can get back to you guys.

I am pleased to see we have found another V02 Challenger.

This car definitely came from the factory with a white painted roof. It's a shame you have already fitted a much more common vinyl roof. V02 two-tone paint is very rare. I would rip it off and paint it white.

Welcome to the forum Bill, we actually love it when new information is added to old posts. :D

The car looks great! I need an example of an EB5 EW1 V02 Challenger for the EB5 page at http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/col ... -EB5.shtml

Would it be OK with you if I have my webmaster add your photo to that page?

Yes it used the same trim as the vinyl top. The only difference being paint instead of vinyl. It is very rare and VERY cool. 8)

Yes. dave-r is right. I have included a pic of the trim piece that separates the two colors on the V02. What's funny about my V02 is that I really wanted the white vinyl top, but there had been a poor history of rust underneath the vinyl, plus I knew I was going to keep the car forever, and didn't think the vinyl would last 50+ years. So I ended up going with the two tone option, even though by 1970, two tone was already five years out of date.

Thanks Dave for reminding me!

Some years ago Galen Govier told me two-tone musclecars are rare.
He wasn't kidding.

dave-r: Not original paint. The car was my daily driver from 1969 until 1999, so the paint was pretty rough -- and we reshot it in 2000. My mistakes when doing it were not re-attaching the body side moldings (that came as part of A05), and also replacing the original steel wheel/dog dishes with road wheels. Oh well. Bill
