Connecting to a Chat Server

Complete the following steps to connect to a chat server from the Chat Service Manager utility.

To connect to a chat server

  1. From the Chat Service Manager utility, select a chat server under Microsoft Exchange Chat Service in the left pane.
  2. From the Action menu, choose Task, and then choose Connect to server.
  3. Type the server's IP address or Domain Name System (DNS) host name in the DNS name box, and then choose OK. The server name is displayed in the right pane.

    Tip You can also locate the server by typing its Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) name (for example, chatsrv1).

To modify Chat Service properties on the server

  1. Select the server.
  2. From the Action menu, choose Properties.
  3. Modify the service properties as needed using the following property sheets.

    General. Use to indicate whether the server will operate only on an intranet (private network), to designate which chat protocols the server will accept (for example, IRC/IRCX), and to set limits for client connections and channel members.

    Channels. Use to impose specific restrictions on any persistent channel or dynamic channel created on the server.

    Settings. Use to modify default client-to-server ports, server-to-server ports, and authentication information.

    Messages. Use to enter information, such as the message of the day, that is sent to clients when they connect to the service.
