dan@gacvx2.gac: The HANDHELDS@GAC.EDU mailing list...
Greetings,
COMP.SYS.HANDHELDS and the HANDHELDS@GAC.EDU | HANDHELDS@GACVAX1.BITNET mailing
list are connected again. MAIL sent to the HANDHELDS mailing list is posted to
the USENET group COMP.SYS.HANDHELDS and items posted to COMP.SYS.HANDHELDS will
be mailed to all the members of the HANDHELDS mailing list.
The HANDHELDS mailing list used to be run out of SRI.EDU, and was gated to
COMP.SYS.HANDHELDS. The list manager at SRI deceided to discontinue the mailing
list, and asked for volunteers to take it over. When Tom Huber (HUBER@GAC.EDU)
and I took over the list we discovered that we would have to rebuld the gateway
between the mailing and USENET. This has taken a few weeks, and now it is
finished. During the period between the time we took over the list and we got
the gateway running again, there was a one way gateway between the mailing list
and the newsgroup, but it did not work the other way.
I would like to ask all users of the HANDHELDS mailing list to observe USENET
rules when sending messages to the list. I have appended some guidelines to
the end of this message.
I would be glad to answer any questions about the mailing list or help with
subscription problems . I can only help with the mailing list. I do not
administrate COMP.SYS.HANDHELDS.
Subscriptions to the mailing list are handled by MAILSERV@GAC.EDU or
MAILSERV@GACVAX1.BITNET. If you need the intervention of a human send mail to
POSTMASTER@GAC.EDU or POSTMASTER@GACVAX1.BITNET. Only yse MAILSERV if your
mailer generated replyable addresses. Send a message to the POSTMASTER if you
want to be added to the list by hand.

--------------------------- USENET GUIDE LINES ---------------------------
This article is excerpted from The University of Chicago Computation
Center Newsletter, Fall, 1986, Vol XXII, No. 3, edited by Yvonne Behn,
written by Melinda Shore.
News is one of the more popular systems on our UNIX machine....Here are
some guidelines, provided by the Usenet community, to keep in mind when
posting:
Deciding to post
Do not repeat postings
Do not post anything when upset, angry, or intoxicated
Be sure your posting is appropriate to Usenet
Do not post other people's work without permission
Don't forget that opinions are those of the poster and not his/her
company
Reply to postings via mail as often as possible
Do not post personal attacks
Where to post
Keep the distribution as limited as possible
Do not post the same article twice to different groups
Do not post to mod., or net.announce newsgroups
Do not post to net.general
Ask someone, if you can't figure out where to post your article
Watch out for newsgroups which have special rules about posting
Writing the article
Write for your audience
Be clear and concise
Compose your "Subject:" line carefully
Proofread your article
Be extra careful with announcements of products or services
Mark postings which spoil surprises
Rotate offensive postings
The shorter your signature, the better
If you must use sarcasm, mark it with a smiley (':-)') or another
device
Please, please, please do not use BITNET, USENET, or the Internet for
advertising your product. This includes shareware authors.
These guidelines were taken from "How to Use USENET Effectively," by
Matt Bishop, NASA Ames Research Center. Don't let this list intimidate
you. The net is a valuable and entertaining resource, and was meant to
be used.
Dan Boehlke: GACVX1 mailer problems, mailer upgrades, GATTO mail...
Greetings to all HANDHELDS@GAC.EDU mailing list readers.
The long message queues on GACVX1 have finaly cleared themselves out. There
should be no more GATTO messages. I have been able to upgrade the mailer on
GACVX1 and GACVX2 to the latest version. The mailing list expansion is now
done by GACVX2, since it had the campus netnews database. The BUG that caused
the many thousands of GATTO messages has been fixed in the latest version of
the mailer (so says the manual, and my tests confirm that at least its old
manifestation is gone.)
HANDHELDS@GAC.EDU and HANDHELDS@GACVAX1.BITNET are mailing lists maintained by
Gustavus Adolphus College. These two are the same mailing list, but two
addresses are provided, since many BITNET sites do not have the software to
process Internet addresses, and many Internet administrators object to the use
of .BITNET as a domain name. Messages send to either address are distributed
to all members of the handhelds mailing list and posted to the USENET group
COMP.SYS.HANDHELDS. Since we wanted to operate a bi-directional gateway,
postings from the COMP.SYS.HANDHELDS newsgroup are distributed by mail to the
members of the HANDHELDS mailing lists. Many people send subscription control
messages to the HANDHELDS mailing list and others, I have done it at times by
accident. The readers of the newsgroup and mailing list do not appreciate
these messages. There is no program that will pick these out. Someone is
likely to send you a flame. I do not act on these messages when I see them.
If your mailer generates replyable addresses use the following to join the
mailing list. Send a mail message to "MAILSERV@GAC.EDU" or
"MAILSERV@GACVAX1.BITNET". The subject line on this message is ignored. In
the body of the message put the line "SUBSCRIBE HANDHELDS real name"
substituting your real name in place of "real name". For example:
$ mail
To: mailserv@gac.edu
Subj:
SUBSCRIBE HANDHELDS John Smith
To leave the mailing list send the command SIGNOFF or UNSUBSCRIBE in the same
manner. Your real name in not required on the SIGNOFF or UNSUBSCRIBE commands.
$ mail
To: mailserv@gac.edu
Subj:
SIGNOFF HANDHELDS
To learn about other MAILSERV commands send "HELP" in the body of the message.
These commands must be sent to MAILSERV in order to work.
If your mailer does not generate replyable addresses, but people can send you
mail using a Internet, BITNET or UUCP address. Send a message to
POSTMASTER@GAC.EDU or POSTMASTER@GACVAX1.BITNET asking to be added to the
HANDHELDS mailing list. POSTMASTER is a human. Also direct any questions
about or problems with the HANDHELDS mailing list to POSTMASTER@GAC.EDU or
POSTMASTER@GACVAX1.BITNET.
