Dear Tape-it Lite for Imation User:
1. Please continue reading below for important installation information,
particularly if you have other backup programs installed on your PC
or intend to install an accelerator card.
2. Before starting Tape-it Lite's Diagnostic program, insert your scratch
tape and let the tape stop spinning before selecting the Start button.
3. Once Tape-it Lite has successfully installed, you will have a new tape
drive icon. You can view the icon by double-clicking your My Computer
icon or opening the Windows 95 Explorer. The drive letter next to this
icon is the new drive letter for your tape drive.
4. Erase your tapes before using them with Tape-it Lite. This prepares
your tape for use by Tape-it Lite. Select your tape drive icon with
your right mouse button (mouse button 2) and choose "Erase" from the
pop-up menu. Note: The tape cartridge needed to complete Tape-it Lite's
Diagnostic does not need to be erased since Tape-it Lite erases the tape
as part of the Diagnostics.
5. You can copy files to tape by using the right mouse button (mouse button
2) to drag files to your new tape drive icon and then select "Copy
Directly to Tape".
6. Complete information on the use of Tape-it Lite is included in the
Tape-it Lite Online Help system. To access the Help system, select your
tape cartridge icon in the Taskbar Tray (where the time is kept) with
your right mouse button. Help is also available by selecting the tape
drive icon in My Computer or Explorer with the right mouse button and
then selecting Properties. Help is accessible from the Media or Drive
Property Sheets.

INSTALLING A 2MB ACCELERATOR CARD WITH TAPE-IT LITE FOR IMATION
INITIAL TAPE-IT LITE INSTALLATION (Non Plug and Play)
Note: Dedicated tape controllers are not designed to be shared between
backup applications. If you are trying to install Tape-it to work with your
accelerator card, and the accelerator card is already being used by another
backup application, you must first Remove the driver for the accelerator card
that is associated with your existing backup application in Device Manager.
It is then recommended to remove the controller from the machine and proceed
with Step 1 so Windows 95 can assign the available Resources for the tape
controller in order for Tape-it to operate correctly.
1. Before installing the Accelerator card:
Install Tape-it Lite for Imation.
2. During Tape-it Lite's installation you will be asked what type of tape
drive you are installing, select Other. Continue the installation by
selecting Next.
3. Finish the installation of Tape-it Lite. You will be asked if you want
to restart your computer now or later. Select "No, I will restart my
computer later".
4. From the Start Menu, select Settings and then Control Panel.
Double click the Add New Hardware icon. Click Next at the first dialog.
5. When asked "Do you want Windows to Search for your new hardware?",
select No and then select Next.
6. From the Hardware types dialog, select SCSI controllers, then select
Next.
7. From the list of Manufacturers select PGSoft and then choose the
appropriate Tape-it Lite tape accelerator driver, then select Next.
8. At the Add New Hardware Wizard dialog box, write down the settings that
Windows recommends to use with your tape accelerator card. Change the
settings on the accelerator card to match the ones suggested by Windows.
Do not install the accelerator card yet. Select Next.
9. Finish the setup and then Shut Down the machine.
10. Install the tape accelerator card and the tape drive (if not already
installed). Turn on the machine. Tape-it Lite for Imation should now
see your accelerator card and you will be ready to run the Tape-it Lite
Diagnostic program.
TAPE-IT LITE INSTALLED CURRENTLY WITH FLOPPY TAPE DRIVE
If Tape-it Lite is already installed for a floppy controller tape drive, you
must first remove the Tape-it Lite floppy disk controller driver before you
load the Tape-it Lite driver for the accelerator card. You do this by:
╖ Right clicking on your My Computer icon and selecting Properties.
╖ Selecting the Device Manager Property sheet.
╖ Double clicking on SCSI Controllers.
╖ Removing the Tape-it Floppy Standard driver.
To install the accelerator driver and card:
╖ Go to Step 4 above and follow the remaining steps
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
CONFLICT WITH OTHER BACKUP SOFTWARE
Attempting to operate a backup program while Tape-it Lite is running may
cause both programs to operate incorrectly, since both programs are
attempting to control the tape drive at the same time. Please take the
following actions depending on the type of tape drive that you have:
1. If you have a SCSI or IDE tape drive, Tape-it Lite will operate as
intended, but any other backup software on your PC may experience
unpredictable results. If you experience problems with other backup
software, we recommend that you uninstall the conflicting backup software.
2. If you have a floppy tape drive, both Tape-it Lite and the other backup
software may conflict with each other. For certain backup software
applications, when these applications are launched, Tape-it Lite will notify
you that you need to disable Tape-it Lite to properly operate the other
backup software. In this case, you do not need to uninstall the other
backup software.
3. If you have a parallel port tape drive, both Tape-it Lite and the other
backup software may conflict with each other. We recommend that you
uninstall the other backup software.
Running Tape-it Lite With Floppy Or Parallel Tape Drives When Other Backup
Programs Are Installed
Tape-it Lite has a built in feature which will intercept the command to
start most popular backup programs and ask you if you want to reboot
the computer and disable Tape-it Lite, however, Tape-it Lite will not work
with some backup programs installed on the computer.
If you have another tape backup program installed on your computer,
you may need to temporarily disable it to run Tape-it Lite. To accomplish
this, find the program you are currently using from the list below and
follow the steps.
1. Arcada/Seagate BACKUP EXEC for Win95. Several tape drives ship with Arcada
software, including Seagate, Conner, Iomega, and Exabyte. To disable Arcada
software so Tape-it Lite can run, find the file drvwppqt.vxd in your
Win95\system\iosubsys sub-directory and rename it drvwppqt.arc.
Reboot your computer and install Tape-it Lite. To re-enable your Arcada
software, rename the same file back to drvwppqt.vxd. If you are using
a dedicated tape drive controller, you will need to completely uninstall
Arcada/Seagate BACKUP EXEC to run Tape-it Lite.
2. H.P. Colorado Backup for Win95. No changes are necessary to run Tape-
it when Colorado Backup is installed, however, if you run your Colorado
software while Tape-it Lite is installed and reboot to disable Tape-it Lite,
you will need to put your tape drive back into your device manager tape drive
section. To do this, go into Control Panel, Add Hardware, do not let Windows
search for new hardware, choose tape drives, then choose Colorado from the
left column and your tape drive model from the right column.
3. Cheyenne Backup for Win95 ver 2.0. If the Cheyenne Backup engine was
put into the startup group during installation, it will need to be re-
moved before running Tape-it Lite, the default during Cheyenne install is
not to put CBENGINE in Start Up. Tape-it Lite and Cheyenne backup will work
when both are installed on your computer. Both will work with a dedicated
tape drive controller also.
4. Novastor Novaback for Win95 Ver.4.3. No changes are necessary to run
Tape-it Lite when Novaback is installed, even if you are using a dedicated
tape drive controller.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Drive Letter Assignment
Install Tape-it Lite according to the directions provided in the Installation
Guide.
If Tape-it Lite properly detected your tape drive and successfully passed the
Tape-it Lite diagnostic, review the new assignments for your drive letters.
If you can no longer find your CD-ROM drive letter or a previously mapped
network drive, or either of these devices has been assigned a new drive
letter, reassign the drive letter given to your tape drive by:
1. Right clicking your My Computer icon and selecting Properties.
2. Selecting the Device Manager tab.
3. Double clicking the "CDROM/Tape Drives" icon
4. Double clicking your tape drive icon - the icon will be a small CD-ROM
icon.
5. Selecting the Settings tab
6. Selecting the drive letter that you wish to be assigned for your
tape drive - if "T:" is not assigned we recommend setting
the "Start drive letter" and the "End drive letter" to "T:".
Otherwise, pick any letter that has not been previously assigned.
Upgrading Tape-it Lite's Normal driver to Enhanced for parallel tape drives
If you installed Tape-it Lite using the "Normal" driver for your
parallel tape drive, you may try using the "Enhanced" driver for
higher performance if you computer successfully supports EPP (enhanced)
mode (consult the manual that came with your computer if unsure).
You will need to uninstall Tape-it Lite (make sure you have a "scratch" tape
on hand, since the reinstall process erases the tape when running the
diagnostics). Use the Add/Remove Programs icon from the Control Panel.
(At the end of the uninstall process, the dialog will say that some
components may not have been removed. Ignore this message; Tape-it Lite was
successfully removed.) Now, re-install Tape-it Lite and select "Enhanced"
mode. If you encounter problems, repeat the uninstall process and reinstall
in "Normal" mode.

Helpful Hints When Running Tape-it Lite for Imation
1. Launch multiple applications you may wish to run before you start any
tape operation. Tape operations may consume significant amounts of
processing speed and it may be difficult to launch another
application once you have begun to read or write to tape.
2. Always rewind and pull out tape cartridges from the tape drive when
they are not in use. All drives are frequently accessed at
unexpected times which can cause delays when the tape drive is
accessed and the media is read.
3. Use ALT TAB to switch between applications.
ALT TAB works much better than using mouse clicks on application
windows or the tray to switch to another application.
4. Double clicking on your tape cartridge icon in the Taskbar Tray
(where your time is located) with the left mouse button displays the
contents of My Computer. Clicking on the tape cartridge icon in the
tray with the right mouse button lets you access Tape-it Lite's Help
System.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Known Issues with Tape-it Lite for Imation.
Tape-it Lite supports only one tape drive on a computer. Should you have
more than one tape drive in your machine, you will need to remove the power
connector and data cable to any drive(s) other than the one intended to run
with Tape-it Lite.
Floppy Tape Drive Users:
Trying to write files from your floppy disk drive to your floppy tape drive
or vice versa may give unpredictable results if your tape drive is connected
to your existing floppy disk controller. You can copy files from the floppy
drive or tape drive to your hard disk and then copy the files to tape.
Pulling the tape while the program is operating
Pulling a tape while Tape-it Lite is reading or writing data can cause the
tape to become unstable. Do not pull a tape while Tape-it Lite is reading or
writing from/to the tape.
Parallel Port Settings
If the software does not detect a tape drive, or you are experiencing poor
performance, you should check the address setting of the parallel port on
your system. Optimal performance is achieved when the port is set at 378h
for LPT1 and 278h for LPT2. Please contact your system administrator or
refer to your system documentation for instructions on how to change the
parallel port settings.
CD-ROM Icons
Since Tape-it Lite uses the CD and ISO 9660 standards in Windows 95, some
tape drive icons in Windows 95 may be represented by CD-ROM icons.
Incorrect CD ROM error message
If you are copying files to tape from a dual speed CD-ROM drive, you may
receive a screen with the message "your drive may require cleaning". By
selecting the enter key, Tape-it Lite will resume copying files to tape.
Copying files from a CD-ROM
If you are copying files to tape from a CD-ROM drive, some machine and CD-ROM
combinations may not always complete due to a known issue with Microsoft's
ESDI 506 driver. This may even result in your machine hanging.
Read Ahead Caching for CD-ROMS
Since Tape-it Lite uses its own caching system, all other caching with
regards to CD-ROMs will be disabled.
File names exceeding 108 characters
ISO 9660 standards support files with names up to 108 characters long.
If your filename with extension exceeds 108 characters, Tape-it Lite will
shorten your filename with the ~1 style of shortening filenames, preserving
its extension.
Computers using the "Suspend" power management feature.
Using the Suspend feature of some power management software can cause tape
operations to fail since the machine is effectively being powered down.
Users may want to turn off the Suspend feature when using Tape-it Lite.
Norton Desktop
Tape-it Lite does not support Norton Desktop for Windows 95.
MicrosoftÆs IntelliMouse
Tape-it for Windows 95 does not support the scrolling wheel feature of
the mouse when TAPE-IT.EXE is running.
By taking TAPE-IT.EXE out of the Startup and placing it on the Desktop,
the IntelliMouse will function normally. When you want to run Tape-it,
you can launch Tape-it from the Desktop by double clicking the Tape-it icon.
Then, when finshed writing files to tape, you can stop Tape-it by closing
Tape-it (press CTRL-ALT-DEL once, select Tape-it and End Task) and the
mouse features will now work normally.
Small supplemental cache for CDFS
CDFS can cause a page fault if a tape has a very large number of directories.
Increasing your Supplemental Cache may fix the problem. Right click your
My Computer icon and select Properties. From the System Properties dialog
box select the Performance folder and select File System.... From the File
System Properties select the CD-ROM folder and increase your Supplemental
Cache to large.
Monte Carlo Sound Cards
If you have a Monte Carlo Sound card and are experiencing problems detecting
your tape drive, you should try removing the sound card from the machine to
see if your tape drive is detected.
MicroSoft's RegClean
If you are running Tape-it Lite and use MicroSoft's RegClean program, you
will have to uninstall Tape-it Lite and reinstall Tape-it Lite for it to
operate properly. Note: you can restore the Registry before running REGCLEAN
by running the UNDO.REG file in the RegClean directory (typically C:\Program
Files\RegClean).
Printer operation with parallel port tape drive
Simultaneous printing during a Copy to/from tape may cause printer and
parallel port tape operations to operate incorrectly and is not recommended.
If you experience any problems printing, you should connect the printer
directly to the parallel port and not use the tape drive's bypass parallel
port.
Sizing of files:
Data sizes reported may vary from those that are being written to tape due
to the varying size of clusters on media. Example: your entire hard
drive may show a certain amount of used space, and when you backup your whole
hard drive, Tape-it Lite may size it differently.
This occurs because a hard disk's cluster size usually does not match Tape-it
Lite's cluster size, which is 2048 bytes. Hard disk cluster sizes range
from 512 bytes for compressed volumes to 64K for non-compressed volumes.
Because the last cluster of most files is not completely consumed and the
cluster size on tape is usually different from the cluster size on disk, the
space consumed on disk for a collection of files is often different on disk
than it is on tape.
Directory Size
Tape-it Lite cannot copy more than 8192 files from a directory to tape. If
the size of your directory is larger that 8192 files, split the files into
groups of less than 8192 and then write them to tape.
Accessing the Tape Drive's Property Sheets While Reading or Writing
Accessing the tape drive's property sheets while trying to read or write
files from tape is not recommended and may cause the media to become unstable.
Cheyenne Infinite Disk
Infinite Disk must be uninstalled in order to run Tape-it.

Troubleshooting
No Tape drives detected
Is the tape drive connected properly? Does it have power?
During Tape-it Lite's installation, was the proper type of tape drive
selected. If not, please uninstall Tape-it Lite and reinstall for the type
of tape drive you have.
Do you have another backup application running? If so, please refer to the
section "Conflict with other backup software" and/or "RUNNING TAPE-IT LITE
WITH FLOPPY OR PARALLEL TAPE DRIVES WHEN OTHER BACKUP PROGRAMS ARE INSTALLED"
in this README.TXT file.
Using Tape-It With a Sound Card, Scanner or Network Adapter installed:
If the Tape-it software cannot find your tape drive during installation,
the most common reason is an interrupt conflict with another device,
such as a sound card, scanner or network adapter. Most parallel ports are
set to IRQ 7 (I/O 378) for LPT1 and IRQ 5 (I/O 278) for LPT2, and these are
the settings recommended for use with Tape-it. Since many sound cards use
these interrupts too, there can be a conflict. To verify that this is the
problem, check to see whether IRQ 7 or IRQ 5 is being used.
To do this in Windows 95:
1. Right-click the My Computer icon and select "Properties".
2. Select the Device Manager tab.
3. Double-click the icon for the type of device you are checking (such as
sound card).
4. Double-click on the device icon.
5. Select the Resources tab. The Interrupt Request and Input/Output range
settings will be displayed, along with any device conflicts.
If there is a device conflict, please reassign the IRQ for the conflicting
device according to the manufacturerÆs documentation.
Your Windows 95 computer must be running in 32 bit mode in order for Tape-it
Lite to run. To see if your computer is running in 32 bit mode do the
following: Select your MyComputer icon with the right mouse button (mouse
button #2) and select Properties. Select the Performance Property Sheet.
File System and Virtual Memory should both be 32 Bit. If either of these is
set to MS DOS Compatibility Mode, Tape-it Lite will not work. Correct the
problem and then try to use Tape-it Lite.
If you have a parallel port tape drive, does your LPT port have an assigned
IRQ in Device Manager? If no IRQ has been assigned to the LPT port, please
assign one to it and then reboot the machine.
Using Tape-It Lite With a Sound Card, Scanner or Network Adapter installed
If the Tape-it Lite software cannot find your tape drive during installation,
the most common reason is an interrupt conflict with another device,

4. Double-click on the device icon.
5. Select the Resources tab. The Interrupt Request and Input/Output range
settings will be displayed, along with any device conflicts.
If there is a device conflict, please reassign the IRQ for the conflicting
device according to the manufacturerÆs documentation.
If your tape drive does not pass Tape-it Lite's Diagnostic program.
Before beginning the Diagnostic let the tape cartridge spin down before
selecting the Start button.
Do you have the proper media for your tape drive?
Has the tape cartridge been formatted from another backup application?
If so, Tape-it requires a pre-formatted cartridge.
Do you have any CD-ROM caching software running? If so, can it be easily
disabled so the Tape-it Diagnostic can be run again?
Try rebooting the machine to start the Diagnostic again.
See section "Troubleshooting", "No Tape drives detected" above for other
possibilities.
Is there another backup application on your machine? See the section
"Conflict with other backup software" and/or "RUNNING TAPE-IT LITE WITH
FLOPPY OR PARALLEL TAPE DRIVES WHEN OTHER BACKUP PROGRAMS ARE INSTALLED" of
this README.TXT file.
