Notes on FaceLift 2.0 for WordPerfect
This file contains important information that is not included in
the FaceLift for WordPerfect User Guide. The information is
organized under the following topics:

FaceLift and FaceLift's FLSETUP Program
The notes in this section apply to FaceLift and the FLSETUP
program, which installs and customizes FaceLift.
FaceLift Files
The following are FaceLift 2.0 files (in addition to those listed
in Appendix C of the FaceLift User Guide):
Name Description
[printerfile].F15 If you are upgrading from FaceLift 1.5,
FaceLift 2.0's FLSETUP program backs up the
existing FaceLift-supported .ALL and .PRS
files and gives them the extension .F15.
FLTFACE.INF Contains information that enables FaceLift
and WordPerfect to load quickly into memory.
EFFECTS.DTA Located in the BTFONTS directory. Contains
information about any custom fonts you have
created so that they appear in the list when
you select FLSETUP's Loadtype option.
Size of Fill Patterns in the Reference Card and User Guide
The sizes of the fill patterns shown in the Custom Fonts
Reference card and Chapter 3 of the User Guide do not match
exactly the sizes you get from your printer. Use the Fill
Scaling option in the Create a New Custom Font screen to adjust
the sizes of the fill patterns.
Correction: Fonts as Graphics Threshold
In FLSETUP's "Review an Installed Printer" option, the default
size for HP LaserJet Plus and compatibles is 30 points. The
default size of HP LaserJet Series II and compatibles and betters
(such as the HP LaserJet III and 4) is 130 points. The limit is
500 points.
Adding Typefaces (LOADTYPE option in FLSETUP)
WordPerfect printer .ALL files can handle approximately 200
typefaces. In addition, you can create between 400 and 600
custom fonts based on those typefaces. (The actual amount
depends on the printer you use.) However, you cannot install
more than 100 typefaces at one time into an .ALL file using the
LOADTYPE option in the FLSETUP program. If you have more than
100 typefaces in the /BTFONTS directory, don't install all of the
typefaces at once. Instead, install them in groups of less than
100.
Error Message: "Can't create or write temporary file"
The above error might appear if you try to add more than 100
typefaces in one session into an .ALL file using the LOADTYPE
option in FLSETUP. See the note above on adding typefaces for
more information.
Insufficient Memory for FaceLift and WordPerfect
If there is not enough memory to run FaceLift and WordPerfect,
FaceLift beeps and returns to the DOS prompt. Remove any TSR
programs, or if you are running DOS 5.0, see your DOS manual
about loading the TSR programs into high memory. If you still
cannot load FaceLift and WordPerfect, you may need to purchase
expanded memory; or if you use DOS 5.0, you can use it to create
expanded memory from extended memory.
Insufficient Memory for Running View Document, Merge, and Go to
DOS
If after loading FaceLift and WordPerfect there is not enough RAM
left to run View Document, Merge, and Go to DOS, try the
following: remove any TSR programs, or if you are running DOS
5.0, see your DOS manual about loading the TSR programs into high
memory. If you still cannot load FaceLift and WordPerfect, you
may need to purchase expanded memory; or if you use DOS 5.0, you
can create expanded memory from extended memory.
Cancelling Print jobs in WordPerfect
Because FaceLift controls printing, canceling a print job in
WordPerfect does nothing; you have to cancel the print job from
FaceLift.
To cancel a print job
1. Exit WordPerfect. The message appears "FLWP Still Printing.
Press Ctrl+C To Cancel."
2. Press Ctrl+C.
With dot-matrix printers, pressing Ctrl+C does not immediately
stop a document from printing because the print job is stored in
a buffer on your computer. Once the printer finishes printing
what is stored in the buffer, the printing stops.
FaceLift Fonts Don't Appear in WordPerfect
If the FaceLift fonts don't appear in WordPerfect's base font
listing, be sure to update the printer (Shift+F7, S, U). If the
fonts still don't appear, it may be because the location of
printer files in WordPerfect is invalid. This could occur if you
have changed the location of the printer .ALL files during the
installation of FaceLift. The steps to change the directory for
printer files in WordPerfect are Shift+F1, L, P.
System Locks When Exiting WordPerfect
The system might lock if you have included the DOS command APPEND
/X /E in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Try setting FaceLift as a TSR
(use the General Settings option in FLSETUP) or, don't use the
APPEND command in AUTOEXEC.BAT if it is not necessary.
Starting WordPerfect DOS from Within Windows
To start WordPerfect from within Windows, you need to either
modify the .PIF file for WordPerfect or change the properties of
your WordPerfect icon to load FLWP.EXE into memory. Consult your
Microsoft Windows User's Guide for more information.
Starting WordPerfect from a Menu System
You need to amend your menu to include loading FaceLift into
memory along with WordPerfect, by changing the command that
executes WordPerfect to FLWP.EXE. This loads FaceLift, which in
turn loads WordPerfect. Consult the documentation included with
your menu program for information on how to edit your menu.
Starting WordPerfect with Another Add-on Program
Some third-party add-on programs available for WordPerfect such
as By Design, Grammatik, and RightWriter that perform functions
such as adding graphic capabilities and grammar and
spell-checking, modify the command you use to load WordPerfect
just as FaceLift does. (FaceLift changes the command for loading
WordPerfect from WP to FLWP.) To use one of these third-party
programs with FaceLift, change the WordPerfect program name in
the General Settings option in FLSETUP to include the executable
file for the other product, for example:
By Design: BD.EXE
Grammatik: GMKWP.EXE
RightWriter: WPRIGHT.EXE
FaceLift loads the third-party program, which in turn loads
WordPerfect.
If FaceLift Erases Printer Soft Fonts
To avoid the problem of FaceLift erasing soft fonts that have
been downloaded to the printer, change the setting for "Is this a
shared printer?" under FLSETUP's "Review and Installed Printer"
option to Yes.
Network Support
The notes in this section apply to some or all supported PC
networks.
FaceLift License Agreement
The FaceLift for WordPerfect license agreement requires the
purchase of one copy of FaceLift for each computer. If you are
installing FaceLift on a network and you have only one copy of
FaceLift, please contact Bitstream or your local software dealer
to purchase a Bitstream Multi-License Pack.
Location of Files
It is strongly recommended that all FaceLift files, especially
the users' individual configuration files, be stored in one
common directory.
Printer Limitations
Up to seven printers can be installed in the master configuration
file, and up to seven more printers can be installed in each
user's configuration file. Therefore, the total possible
printers for a given user is 14 printers.
User Configuration Files
If you do not create user configuration files, FaceLift uses the
master configuration files when it loads FLWP. This permits
users to print with FaceLift fonts. However, without user
configuration files, users cannot make any modifications in
FLSETUP, such as creating custom fonts.
Separate .ALL Files for Network Users
It is best that users who plan to make lots of custom fonts with
FaceLift have their own .ALL file and BTFONTS typeface directory.
Microsoft LAN Manager
Investigation has shown that FaceLift 2.0 does not fully support
LAN Manager. If you bought FaceLift 2.0 to use with LAN Manager,
Bitstream recommends that you return FaceLift to your dealer for
a full refund.
Novell Form Numbers and Banners
Selecting Novell forms and banners from within WordPerfect does
not work with FaceLift 2.0. To use Novell forms or banners, run
the CAPTURE command to set the form or banner. Then run FLSETUP,
select the Port Mapping option and set LPTx to DIRECT.
Printing Problems on LANtastic, Banyan Vines, and other
non-Novell Networks
If you send a job to print, hear a beep from the workstation and
nothing prints, you may need to change the port mapping table in
FaceLift.
To change the port mapping table:
1. Type FLSETUP /N at the directory where the FaceLift program
files are located.
2. Select the menu option "Change FLWP.CFG master
configuration", and press F10 to continue.
3. From the Main Menu, choose "Port Mapping."
4. Tab to the port you need to change, and press Enter.
5. Highlight "Direct" from the pop-up box of port mapping
options, and press Enter.
6. Press F10, and choose the option "Save, return to Network
Administrator menu."
7. Choose "Save, return to DOS."
Now, try printing with FLWP.
Laser Printers
The notes in this section apply to some or all supported laser
printers.
IBM 4029: 2nd Print Job Uses Resident Fonts
The IBM 4029 requires the WPHP2.ALL file dated 07/17/92 or later.
HP LaserJet Plus and Series II Printers: Characters Missing from
Documents
(If you use a LaserJet compatible, go to the next heading.)
Documents can have characters missing if the number of font
changes exceeds the 16 fonts per page maximum on the HP LaserJet
Plus and Series II. Either reduce the number of fonts per page,
or try this workaround:
1. At the FaceLift directory in DOS (normally C:\WP51, if you
are on a stand-alone system), type FLSETUP.
2. Choose the option "Review an installed printer", and press
F10.
3. Highlight the printer model on the list of installed
printers, and press F10.
4. Change the option "Download needed characters only" to N(o).
Then press F10.
5. Select the option "Save, return to DOS."
Try printing your document now.
Bear in mind that the above steps will slow down printing. For
simpler documents with fewer font changes, you probably will want
to change the "Download needed characters only" setting back to
its default of Y(es) to regain print speed.
HP LaserJet compatibles: Characters Missing from Documents
You may experience characters missing from documents when you
print to an HP clone printer. You need to permanently change the
method which FaceLift uses to download fonts. To do this:
1. At the FaceLift directory in DOS (normally C:\WP51 if you
are on a stand-alone system), type FLSETUP.
2. Choose the option "Review an installed printer", and press
F10.
3. Highlight the printer model on the list of installed
printers, and press F10.
4. Change the option "Download needed characters only" to N(o).
Then press F10.
5. Select the option "Save, return to DOS."
Try printing your document now.
If this does not correct the problem see "Installing a Generic
Laser Printer Driver" in Chapter 4 of the FaceLift 2.0 for
WordPerfect User Guide.
HP LaserJets and Compatibles: An Additional Suggestion if
Characters Drop Out of Documents
Occasionally, characters can drop out of documents because memory
for soft fonts is set too high in FaceLift's FLSETUP program.
Try lowering the setting for memory for soft fonts under
FLSETUP's "Review an Install Printer" option. Or you can turn
off the printer to clear its soft font memory; if you do this,
you also need to exit and re-enter FLWP.
HP LaserJet 4
The HP LaserJet 4 requires an HPLJ4.ALL file dated 07/01/92 or
later. When Text Quality is set to Draft in WordPerfect, your
output is at 300 dpi instead of 600 dpi.
Installing a Type City Cartridge after FaceLift Is Installed
If you have FaceLift set up for a dot-matrix or inkjet printer
and you are installing a Type City cartridge for a laser printer,
the Type City installation program locks when searching the .ALL
files. To avoid this problem, temporarily copy the FLWP5xx.ALL
file for the FaceLift printer to a different directory. When the
Type City installation is complete, copy the FLSP5xx.ALL file
back to its original location.
Correction: Fonts as Graphics Threshold

In FLSETUP's "Review an Installed Printer" option, the default
size for HP LaserJet Plus and compatibles is 30 points. The
default size of HP LaserJet Series II and compatibles and better
(such as the HP LaserJet III and 4) is 130 points. The limit is
500 points.
Dot-Matrix and Inkjet Printers
The notes in this section apply to some or all supported dot-
matrix and inkjet printers.
Printing Custom fonts Colors with WordPerfect 5.0
Specifying custom font colors can have unreliable results with
WordPerfect 5.0. For best results, use the predefined colors.
Page Margins
FaceLift might use narrower or wider top and bottom page margins
than you are accustomed to in WordPerfect. If you need to,
adjust the margins in WordPerfect.
HP DeskJet: Saturation Settings
Changing the saturation setting can lead to poor results in
printing. It is best to leave saturation at 100% in FLSETUP.
HP DeskJet 500 C: Sporadic Lines of Color
Custom fonts with multiple effects printed in color might have
sporadic hairlines in the wrong color.
PaintJet XL 300: Required .ALL File
FaceLift requires the WPHP1.ALL file dated 04/22/92 or later for
WordPerfect 5.1. No .ALL file is available for WordPerfect 5.0.
Computer System Support
The notes in this section apply to some or all supported IBM
PC/XT, AT, PS/2 or compatibles.

Supported Printers
Because of the great number of printers that emulate the most
popular dot-matrix, inkjet, and laser printers, it is not
possible to guarantee that FaceLift 2.0 works with every one.
The following printers are supported by FaceLift 2.0 in addition
to those listed in the introduction to the User Guide:
