DATE: May 4, 1994 PRODUCT: WordPerfect 5.1+ for DOS (03/21/94) SUBJECT: Contents Of WP 5.1+ README.WP File (03/21/94) README.WP 03/21/94 This README file contains information about the enhancements and changes made in WordPerfect 5.1+ for DOS. Some of these changes have not yet been documented in the WP 5.1+ Update Guide. WORDPERFECT 5.1+ Conversions Additional conversion drivers have been added so you can retrieve all versions of MultiMate, Word 5.0 and 5.5 for DOS, XyWrite versions 3.55 to 4.0, and WordStar 3.3 to 7.0 files. You can convert only one file at a time using WordPerfect. If you want to convert several files at once, you can run ConvertPerfect (CV.EXE) as a stand-alone application. To get Help on using CV.EXE, type CV/? at a DOS prompt. Running CV.EXE stand-alone was added after the Update Guide was printed. When starting WordPerfect, you can use the /CV startup option to use ConvertPerfect instead of WordPerfect to convert files. If you experience a problem retrieving a file in WordPerfect using the above formats, try using the /CV startup option or run CV.EXE stand-alone to convert the file. Graphic Conversions Because 5.1+ doesn't support the full capabilities of graphics created in WordPerfect 6.0, graphics created in version 6.0 will look different in version 5.1+. ScreenExtender, FaceLift, and Fax If you have limited RAM, you won't be able to run the ScreenExtender, FaceLift, and fax programs all together. ScreenExtender and FaceLift If you plan to run WordPerfect 5.1+ under Microsoft Windows, WordPerfect has provided several program information files (.PIF) that gives Windows the information it needs to run WordPerfect. These .PIF files do not contain the information necessary to run ScreenExtender and FaceLift. You will have to create or edit a .PIF file. See Appendix S: .PIF File in the WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS Reference manual. ScreenExtender If your display disappears after loading ScreenExtender and choosing Screen Type, exit and then re-enter WordPerfect. Using WordPerfect 6.0 Files In WordPerfect 5.1+, you can retrieve version 6.0 files automatically, but you can't use the following features with a 6.0 file: Append text Print or Look (in File Manager) Input Sort File Document Compare Secondary Merge File Using WordPerfect 5.1+ and Launcher If you are having memory problems, you can use the /LL startup option so that Launcher will load into conventional memory. Launcher uses about 13K. Running WordPerfect 5.1+ under Microsoft Windows 3.1. If you get the error message "LC: Windows 3.x Enhanced mode detected, Task Swap API disabled," WordPerfect detects there is already a DOS Task Switcher API provided by Windows. Start WordPerfect 5.1+ with the /DA startup option so WordPerfect does not attempt to load the DOS Task Switcher API again. WordPerfect will use the Task Switch API loaded by Windows. You can also use the /DL startup option to disable all Task Switchers. Fax You cannot use FAXDIR and FAXB to fax under Microsoft Windows. WORDPERFECT 5.1 The following information is about the enhancements and changes made to WordPerfect 5.1 that have not yet been documented in the WP 5.1 Reference manual. List Files A fifth option, Sort List Files, has been added to the Setup: Document Management/Summary screen (Shift-F1, 3, 4, 5). If you answer "no," the list of files will be displayed in the order that the files reside on the disk. This will decrease the amount of time required to display List Files. Power Saving Management WordPerfect will now take advantage of a power-saving feature that will be included in future laptop operating systems. This new feature will lower the power consumption of the machine. Note: The /NP startup option was added to WP to disable the power-saving feature. This may be needed if you are unable to start WordPerfect. Startup Option The /ND startup option (no disable keyboard) was added to WP to disable a fix for the Shift key sticking. This option can be used if you experience conflicts with other TSR (terminate and stay resident) programs.
