1. DRIVER INSTALLATION
===============================================================
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THIS DRIVER AND PREVIOUS VERSIONS (v4.x)
------------------------------------------------------------
o New printing status monitors
o Print spooling through new HP Spooler
INSTALLING THROUGH THE CONTROL PANEL
------------------------------------
HP does not recommend installing the driver through the Control
Panel as this may result in incomplete installation. You should
run the HPSETUP.EXE program on the installation disk instead.
If you must install the driver through the Control Panel,
rename the file HPADJET.INF to OEMSETUP.INF on the driver
installation disk before doing so.
REINSTALLING OR UPGRADING MS WINDOWS
------------------------------------
If you reinstall or upgrade Microsoft Windows after you install
the printer driver, you must reinstall the printer driver to
ensure proper operation of the printer.
ABOUT THE HP SPOOLER
--------------------
The HP Spooler manages the documents that you print to your
HP DeskJet 300 Series printer. It lets you choose a Print Priority
that returns you quickly to your application where you can
continue with other tasks, or starts the document printing as
quickly as possible.
The HP Spooler takes the place of the Windows Print Manager. You
have to disable HP Spooler using the INI Configuration program
if you want to use the Print Manager for background printing.
See the section on INI file modifications in this README file.

2. TROUBLESHOOTING
===============================================================
Information on common printer and printing problems can be found
in the help file. To access this information, click the Help
button in the printer setup dialog box.
CROSSHATCHED FILLS AND PATTERNS DO NOT PRINT
--------------------------------------------
For many applications, printing crosshatching is not supported
in some printer modes. If you are having problems printing
crosshatching, try using Color Graphics Printout mode or
Black Text Printout mode.
DRIVER WILL NOT INSTALL TO AN HP OMNIBOOK PC
--------------------------------------------
The HP Omnibook has a subset of Microsoft Windows 3.1 which
does not include the file LZEXPAND.DLL. This file is required
for driver installation and is included in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM
directory of most PCs running Microsoft Windows 3.1.
Obtain a copy of this file and copy it to the WINDOWS\SYSTEM
directory of the HP Omnibook before installing the printer
driver.
FORMATTING PROBLEMS WITH PRINT REGIONS AND MARGINS
--------------------------------------------------
To use the same print regions as the HP DeskJet 310 v1.0
printer driver, check the "Old Print Region" check box in the
INI Configuration program. For instructions on using the
INI Configuration program, see the section on INI file
modifications in this README file.
NOTE: With this change, text on printed pages
containing color will be shifted up from
what you see on your screen.
The printable area on a page using the HP DeskJet 300 Series
printer driver differs from the printable area allowed by DOS
applications.

3. APPLICATION NOTES
===============================================================
SOFTWARE APPLICATION NOTES
--------------------------
At the time the HP DeskJet 300 Series printer driver was
released, the following software application limitations
existed:
ALDUS PAGEMAKER 5.0: You cannot cancel a print job from
PageMaker 5.0.
BORLAND QUATTRO PRO 1.0: In Black Text mode, graph
backgrounds do not print.
COREL DRAW 4.0: Rotated graphic images will print very
slowly (printing can take 1 to 2 hours). Select Color
Graphics or Color Photo Printout mode instead of Automatic
mode when printing rotated graphic images. The printer will
print faster in these modes.
COREL DRAW 4.0: Portions of printed output will be rotated
180 degrees and enlarged. Exit Windows and then restart
Windows. Then try printing again.
COREL DRAW 4.0: Full-Color pattern fills may not print
correctly. Use alternative fill types.
HP Explorer: IF you have the HP Explorer software for the
HP LaserJet 4L running in background and you attempt to
print with an HP DeskJet 300 series printer driver, you may
get an error message "Not Enough Memory To Print". To print
with the HP DeskJet 300 series printer driver, either turn
off the HP Explorer Software or add the "/x" switch to the
STAT4L.EXE command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. The command
should then read
STAT4L.EXE /x
Using the /x switch may increase the time it takes for
HP Explorer to "Pop Up."
MICROSOFT EXCEL 5.0 & 4.0: Some paths to the driver dialogs
do not work correctly and settings are not retained. To
reach a printer setup that works, select:
(EXCEL 5) File, Page Setup, Page, Options
(EXCEL 4) File, Page Setup, Printer Setup, Setup.
MICROSOFT PUBLISHER 1.0: You cannot change print settings
from Microsoft Publisher 1.0. You must change print settings
through the Control Panel.
MICROSOFT WORD 6.0: To print more than 1 selected document,
you must disable Background printing. To do this, make sure
that Tools, Options, Print, Background Printing is not
selected.
MICROSOFT WORKS 2.0A and 3.0: If problems are encountered
when printing charts, use Color Graphics Printout mode with
Pattern Halftoning.
TURBOTEX 93: If problems are encountered when printing forms,
use Black Text or Color Graphics Printout mode.
WORDPERFECT 6.0: When printing tables, there may be
horizontal gaps at several places on the page. WP6.0a fixes
this problem. However, if you are unable to upgrade to 6.0a,
do the following:
Run: \WPC20\BIFEDIT20.EXE
Select: File, Open Private BIF
Select: WP Print Process
Select: WPCorp-Windows Printer Flags
Click: Insert... and add the following
Item: HPADJET
Item Type: Unsigned Double Word
Value: 2
Click: OK, Close
WORDPERFECT 6.0: Underlining and strikethrough for color
text does not print in Black Text mode.
WORDPERFECT 6.0: WordPerfect reads the minimum print margins
only when it is first started. These margins are determined
by the paper size and orientation settings in the driver.
If you are unable to set the margins to the minimum values
for the printer, exit WordPerfect and make sure that the
correct paper size and orientation settings are set in the
driver through the Windows Control Panel. Then restart
WordPerfect.
WORDPERFECT: The Paper Source setting in the driver setup
dialog (Sheet Feeder or Manual Feed) is ignored. Use the
following path to set it:
Select Layout, Page, PaperSize and choose or define a
Paper Type with the correct "Location".
WORDPERFECT 5.2: You may have trouble printing some color
images. Try the solution:
Select File, Preferences, Print, and turn off "Fast
Graphics Printing" by unchecking the check box.
WORDPERFECT 5.2: Text in text boxes with shaded backgrounds
does not print when "Fast Graphics Printing" is not selected.

4. INI FILE MODIFICATIONS
===============================================================
The HPACNFIG.EXE file located in your WINDOWS or WINDOWS\SYSTEM
directory modifies control values in HPADJET.INI (and MSPUB.INI).
WARNING: These control values affect the behaviour of the driver.
1. Run the HPACNFIG.EXE file from the Program Manager
or File Manager.
2. Click on the Help button for information on each of the
control values before changing anything.
3. Click the OK Button.
