DISK INFORMATION
This SMC SuperDisk is designed to be used with SMC's EZStart Program,
which is on this SuperDisk. EZStart configures and tests your adapter,
copies the files you need from this disk to your PC, and displays or
prints appropriate instruction files that are located on this disk.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
To use EZStart, your system must meet the following minimum requirements:
o MS-DOS or PC-DOS operating system, version 3.13 or later, which
is required to run the EZStart program
o Card and socket services software -- compliant with PCMCIA
specification version 2.01 or higher -- must already be installed
on your computer. Otherwise, you cannot access your computer's
PCMCIA slot(s). For more information, refer to the SMC EliteCard
PCMCIA Ethernet Adapter User Guide.
o To take advantage of EZStart's graphics features, a VGA or better
monitor; however, EZStart can operate in text mode on any monitor
o A minimum amount of available hard disk space (typically 50KB)
for installing a single driver from the SuperDisk using EZStart
OR
At least 1.44MB of available hard disk space if you intend to
extract all of the drivers from the SuperDisk
Note: Refer to the "Installing A Network Driver" section later in
this document or the User Manual for more information on
copying driver files from the SuperDisk.
USING CARD AND SOCKET SERVICES SOFTWARE
Your SMC EliteCard PCMCIA Ethernet adapter is supplied with Card
and Socket Services (CSS) software. If your computer does not have
CSS software, or the version of CSS software predates version 2.00,
install the CSS software supplied with your SMC EliteCard PCMCIA
Ethernet adapter. Otherwise, when you run EZStart, a message tells
you that CSS has not been detected; EZStart then closes and returns
you to the DOS prompt.
The EliteCard PCMCIA Ethernet Adapter User Guide contains
instructions for installing the supplied CSS software.
Note: If you have a Compaq Concerto, use the CSS software supplied
with your computer, regardless of the version. Appendix A in
the EliteCard PCMCIA Ethernet Adapter User Guide contains
additional information about using your EliteCard on various
hardware platforms.
If you install the supplied CSS software, you will find that CSS
places statements in your CONFIG.SYS file that automatically load
the ATADRV.SYS and SRAMDRV.SYS drivers each time you boot your system.
If you will not be using a PCMCIA hard drive card or an SRAM memory
card, you can delete these drivers from your CONFIG.SYS file to make
more memory available.
Note: If you change system resources (such as disabling a serial or
parallel port and then enabling it at a later time), your
system may allocate the same resources to more than one port,
resulting in an IRQ or RAM conflict. If this occurs, remove
your SMC EliteCard PCMCIA adapter from the socket, then run
the CSALLOC /D command. For more information, refer to
Chapter 5 in the EliteCard PCMCIA Ethernet Adapter User Guide.
If you experience other problems connecting your laptop computer
to your network when using your EliteCard, the problem may be
caused by your computer BIOS. Contact your computer dealer to
see if a BIOS upgrade is available for your computer.
USING EZSTART
EZStart is an all-purpose utility program that simplifies the
following tasks:
Install card and socket services software compliant with
PCMCIA specification version 2.01 or higher, if this
software is not currently installed on your computer.
Install the network driver
Install and configure PC Agent/SNMP software, and view
network management information it collects
In addition, EZStart makes it easy to perform optional
diagnostic procedures:
Manually configure the adapter by selecting a value for
each configuration option on an individual basis
Test two or more adapters communicating with each other
over your actual network
LOADING EZSTART
EZStart can run from the diskette, or for faster operation it can be
copied onto a hard disk and run from there.
Note: To run EZStart from the hard disk, copy all the files from
the SuperDisk to your computer's hard disk. However, make sure
that the compressed driver file, SMCD13.EXE, EZSTART.EXE, and
ADAPTER.EXE reside in the same directory.
To load EZStart, from the DOS command line, type:
[path]ezstart<Enter>
To load EZStart in Text Mode (instead of Graphics Mode), type
[path]ezstart/T<Enter>
To load EZStart from Microsoft Windows, select the File menu in
Program Manager. When the Run dialog box appears, type:
[path]ezstart
in the Command Line box, then select the OK button.
INSTALLING A NETWORK DRIVER
EZStart accesses network driver files through the compressed
driver file, SMCD13.EXE. The file name, SMCD13.EXE, specifies
the family of adapters supported ("D" denotes 8016C/PC PCMCIA
card), and the version of the SuperDisk ("13" denotes 1.3).
EZStart copies the network driver and any other supporting files
from the compressed driver file to a location compatible with
your network operating system.
Creating an Installation or Options Diskette:
If your network operating system requires an installation or
options floppy diskette, you can build it by following these steps:
Run EZStart from the hard disk as described above in the
section titled LOADING EZSTART.
If card and socket services is not already installed,
or if your computer has an installed version of card
and socket services with a version earlier than 2.01,
then exit EZStart to return to the DOS prompt, change
to the drive containing the SuperDisk, and type
"install". For more information, refer to the SMC
EliteCard PCMCIA Ethernet Adapter User Guide.
Note: To access your computer's PCMCIA slot(s), you must have
card and socket services software compliant with PCMCIA
specification version 2.01 or higher installed on your
computer.
Select the Drivers button from the EZStart main screen.
When prompted for the Destination Directory by the EZStart
Driver Installation window, specify a floppy drive
(e.g., A:\).
Insert a floppy disk into the specified drive and press
Enter. The driver and appropriate configuration files will
be copied to the floppy diskette.
The floppy disk can now be used as an installation or options
diskette. When configuring your networking software to use the SMC
driver, insert the floppy diskette when prompted to insert an
installation or options diskette.
Extracting All Driver Files to Hard Disk:
If you prefer, you can extract all of the network drivers
from the SuperDisk to your hard disk by:
Changing your default directory to the floppy drive where
the SuperDisk resides.
Typing SMCD13 <Destination Directory> at the DOS prompt
(where <Destination Directory> is the path where you want
the extracted SuperDisk contents to reside).
Note: There must be at least 1.44MB of available hard disk space.
Pressing Enter.
Drivers for many LAN operating systems and software utilities are
also available through EZStart. The following list describes them:
Utilities/ Contents
Drivers
DOS ODI Open data-link interface driver to be used with
ODI protocol stacks.
EZSTART Documentation for the EZStart Program.
MS LAN (.DOS and .OS2) Microsoft LAN Manager drivers.
MANAGER
NDIS DOS and OS/2 NDIS drivers to be used with NDIS-
compliant network operating systems and protocol
stacks. Subdirectories contain documentation and
.INI files for specific network operating systems.
PCAGENT Documentation and driver for SMC's PC Agent/SNMP
network-management utility.
In addition to the driver or utility program itself, each
driver has the following associated files:
o An INSTALL.DOC or other .DOC file that explains how to install
and use the software; and
o A RELEASE.DOC file that states the current version, release date,
and any improvements made in this version of the software.
