INSTALLING THE SMC DRIVER

The installation procedure described below loads the most current SMC
driver from the SMC SuperDisk while utilizing the auto-detection
capabilities of Windows 95. Do not follow any installations if prompted
by Windows 95 without first performing the steps described below.

NOTE: The procedure described below applies to SMC EtherEZ network cards
in their default PnP enabled mode. If you have disabled the PnP
capability of the card, proceed to the section titled 'Non-PnP
      Network Card Installation'.

1. If Windows 95 is already installed on your computer, proceed to
Step 2. Otherwise, complete the Windows 95 installation without the
   SMC network card installed.

2. Start Windows 95. Insert the SMC SuperDisk into a floppy drive after
   Windows 95 has come up.

3. If you have not yet installed the SMC EtherEZ network card (preferred),
   proceed to step 4.

   Otherwise:

   - If you have already installed the EtherEZ network card AND driver,
record your current network and protocol settings, such as IP address
and workgroup name, as they may be lost during this installation.
You can get this information by clicking on 'My Computer', 'Control
Panel', and 'Network'. Select the appropriate protocol, click on the
'Properties' button, and record the displayed information. Proceed to
     Step 4.

   - If you already have an EtherEZ network card in your computer WITHOUT a
driver installed, Windows 95 will automatically detect the card and
display a 'New Hardware Detected' window. Choose 'Cancel' and proceed
     to Step 4.

4. From the Task Bar, select 'Start' and then 'Run . . .' and type
   A:W95INST<Enter>.

5. Remove the SMC SuperDisk, close all windows, and shut down your computer.
With your PC turned OFF insert the SMC network card (if not already installed),
  and attach the network cable.

6. Restart Windows 95. Make sure you have your Windows 95 CD available. If
you have copied all the files from the CD to your hard drive, make a
note of the path to those files.

7. Windows 95 will automatically detect your network card when restarted.
When prompted, insert the SMC SuperDisk into your floppy drive and click
'OK'. Windows 95 will begin installing software from the Windows 95 CD
(or the Windows 95 path you have designated). If the message "The file
NETSMC.INF on SMC SuperDisk could not be found" appears, specify the
path to the SMC SuperDisk (e.g., A:) and click 'OK'.

8. Follow the remaining Windows 95 instructions to complete the
installation. When prompted, select 'Yes' to restart your computer and
   remove the SMC SuperDisk.

OPTIONAL PROCEDURES TO MODIFY CARD SETTINGS AND ADD NETWORK PROTOCOLS

Double-click on the 'My Computer', 'Control Panel', and 'Network' icons.
The 'Network' box appears. If the correct network protocols are not
installed, select the primary network to which you will be attaching in the
'Primary Network Logon' list box. Click 'Add'. The 'Select Network
Component Type' box appears. Follow the on-screen directions to select
network protocols.

For peer-to-peer networks, you may wish to enable 'File and Print Sharing'
in the 'Network' box.

To modify other network card properties, select the appropriate tab or
click on the 'Properties' button from the 'Network' box and modify
properties as desired.

MANUAL REMOVAL OF A DRIVER

Executing the W95INST batch file will remove any previously loaded
SMC EtherEZ 8416 driver. If you have an older NON PnP network card
already installed with an older driver and you would like to remove
it, follow the procedure described below:

1. From the Start Menu, select 'Settings' and then 'Control Panel'.

2. Double click the 'Systems' icon.

3. Select the 'Device Manager' tab, double click on 'Network
Adapters', and then click on the network adapter that you would
    like to remove.

4. Select the 'Remove' button and then you will get a 'Confirm Device
    Removal' box. Select OK.

5. Restart Windows 95 and go to step 4 of the NON-PnP NETWORK CARD
    INSTALLATION section of this document.

NON-PnP NETWORK CARD INSTALLATION

This section describes how to install the drivers for an SMC EtherEZ
network card with PnP disabled or an SMC network card that is not PnP
compatible (e.g., 8013 Plus, 8216 Ultra). Note that the default state of
this card is PnP enabled, so you should NOT follow this procedure unless
you have disabled the PnP capability of the card using EZStart.

NOTE: If you have already installed an SMC EtherEZ network card with PnP
disabled AND loaded an older driver, go to 'Control Panel', select
'Systems', select 'Device Manager', click on 'Network Adapter', click
on the SMC network card, and select 'Remove'. When presented with the
'Confirm Device Removal' window, select 'OK'. Restart Windows 95 and proceed
    to Step 4.

1. With your PC turned OFF insert the SMC network card into your PC.

2. Run the EZStart utility from the SuperDisk to verify that the card has
no conflicts with the machine. Click on 'Start', 'Shutdown', 'Restart
the computer in MS-DOS mode', and 'Yes'. Select 'Automatic' or 'Custom'
to setup the card (refer to ezstart.doc on the SuperDisk for more
information). Make a note of the card settings that EZStart provides for
   the driver installation.

   - Card settings needed for an SMC EtherEZ, Elite 16 or Ultra 16 network
card with Memory Mapped Enabled are IRQ, I/O Base, and Memory RAM.

   - Card settings needed for an SMC EtherEZ with I/O Mapped Enabled are
IRQ and I/O Base. Note that in some cases Windows 95
'Properties/Resources' displays a Memory Range. This setting does not
need to be noted or changed.

3. Restart Windows 95.

4. Select 'Start', 'Settings', 'Control Panel', and click on the 'Network'
   icon.

5. At the 'Network Configuration' window, click on 'Add', select 'Adapter',
and click on 'Add' again. When the 'Network Adapter' window appears,
   click on 'Have Disk'.

6. When presented with the 'Install From Disk' window, specify the path to
the root directory of the SMC SuperDisk (e.g., A:) and click 'OK'. When
the 'Network Adapter' window appears, highlight the appropriate SMC
   network card and click 'OK'.

7. When the 'Network Configuration' window appears, highlight the
appropriate SMC network card, click on 'Properties', and select the
'Resources' tab. Change the settings to match the card settings recorded
in Step 2 and click 'OK'.

8. Select the appropriate Clients and Protocol in the 'Network
Configuration' window and click on 'OK'. (See 'Optional Procedures')
When prompted, specify the appropriate path for files
   (e.g., Windows 95 CD, D:, or SMC drivers, A:).

9. Restart Windows 95.
