DRIVER INSTALLATION

o Primary installation (network card not presently installed)

If you've already installed another card or loaded another driver,
refer to the procedure titled 'Network card already installed or
older driver previously loaded'.

NOTE: If you experience any problems during driver installation,
you may choose to run EZStart and use its 'Automatic' feature
to configure the EtherEZ PnP SMC8416 network card. Refer to
the README.DOC file on the SuperDisk, or for further detail,
refer to the EZSTART.DOC file found within EZStart. EZStart
will not run in a Windows NT DOS window. You must boot from
DOS to setup and test card.

1. Complete the Windows NT installation without an SMC network card
installed in your PC. Have the SMC SuperDisk and Windows NT
installation files (on CD or hard drive) available. When prompted
with a window asking about 'Participating on a network', change
the default to 'Do not connect this computer to a network at
this time'. Click 'Next' and follow the prompts to reboot.

2. Install the SMC network card. Start Windows NT.

3. Double-click the 'My Computer', 'Control Panel', and 'Network'
icons. The 'Network Configuration' window appears, prompting you
to install Windows NT networking. Select 'Yes'. Windows NT
invokes the 'Network Setup Wizard'. Click on 'Next'.

4. When prompted to 'Search for a Network Adapter', click on 'Select
from List'; do not select 'Start Search'.

5. When prompted to 'Select a Network Adapter', click on 'Have Disk'.
Insert the SuperDisk when prompted and click 'OK'.

6. You are presented with the 'Select OEM Option' window. Highlight
'SMC8416 EtherEZ' (or appropriate) and click 'OK'.

7. When prompted to start searching for a network adapter, click
    on 'Next'.

8. Select network protocols when prompted and click 'Next'.

NOTE: To complete a TCP/IP installation, you will need to know
your IP Address and Subnet Mask.

9. Click 'Next' and click 'Next' again when prompted to 'Install
Network Components'. When prompted for Windows NT files, type
the path to your Windows NT files on CD-ROM (e.g., D:\WINNT), or
change the path to those files on your hard drive, and click 'OK'.

10. You will be prompted with the 'Adapter Card Setup' window.
Verify the correct network card has been detected. Click on 'OK'
to accept the default settings. In most cases Windows NT will
detect the correct card settings and you will not have to change
    anything.

11. Click on 'Next' and click 'Next' again when prompted to 'Start
    the Network'.

12. Enter the 'Workgroup' or 'Domain' names (optional) when prompted
    and click on 'Next'.

13. Select 'Finish' when prompted and click on 'Yes' when prompted to
    reboot. Remove the SuperDisk.

14. FOR FURTHER CUSTOMIZATION

You can modify card settings via the 'Network' applet. Install
additional protocols and network components by selecting the
appropriate folder (e.g., Customizing Protocols, Services,
    Identification, or Bindings).

o Network card already installed or older driver previously loaded

Follow this procedure to replace Windows NT driver files with the
latest SMC driver files. By removing driver files, you will lose
network settings. Make sure you have a record of settings such as IP
address, workgroup name, etc. Check with your network administrator
for complete information.

You must boot from
DOS to setup and test the card.

1. Install the SMC network card (if not already installed), attach
network cable, and boot Windows NT.

2. Double-click the 'My Computer', 'Control Panel', and 'Network'
icons. From the 'Network' window, select the 'Adapter' tab.

3. Highlight the network driver you wish to remove and click
'Remove'. (You may choose to record network card settings for
future reference. If so, highlight the network card and click on
    'Properties'.) Click 'Yes'.

4. Click 'Close' and select 'Yes' when prompted to restart.

5. Double-click the 'My Computer', 'Control Panel', and 'Network'
icons and select the 'Adapters' tab.

6. Do not select any of the network cards listed. Select 'Add'.

7. You are presented with the 'Select Network Adapter' window. Click
    on 'Have Disk'.

8. You are presented with the 'Insert Disk' window. Specify the path
to the root directory of the SuperDisk (e.g., A:>) and click 'OK'.

9. You are presented with the 'Select OEM Option' window. Highlight
'SMC8416 EtherEZ' (or appropriate) and click 'OK'.

10. You will be prompted with the 'Adapter Card Setup' window.
Verify the correct network card has been detected. Click on 'OK'
to accept the default settings. In most cases Windows NT will
detect the correct card settings and you will not have to change
    anything.

11. You are presented with the 'Network' window where the SMC network
card is now listed as an installed adapter. At this point you can
select 'Close' to exit the 'Network' applet and follow the prompts
to restart Windows NT or, you may choose to perform the optional
   procedures described below.

Optional: Install additional protocols and network components by
selecting the appropriate folder (e.g., Customizing
Protocols, Services, Identification, or Bindings). Refer
to the Microsoft Windows NT installation guide for more
information. After completing your changes click on
'Close' to exit the 'Network' applet.

12. Select 'Yes' when prompted to reboot for the changes to take
    effect.
