SHIPS.EXE Battle Ship for NetWare (Written by Wolfgang Schreiber)

Purpose: Network Game/Fun (Public Domain)

General: Two users can play Battle Ship if they are logged in
to a common NetWare Server or are on the same Network
                cable segment.

There are two versions of this game available:

                  - 'SHIPS.EXE' is for users logged in to a common
NetWare file server. Players do not have to be
located on the same network cable segment.
                    (Works on NetWare v2.x / v3.x)

                  - 'SHIPSIPX.EXE' does not require the players to
be logged in to a NetWare server. This version
requires that players have Novell's IPX loaded and
are on the same cable segment.
                    (Works on NetWare v2.x / v3.x / v4.x / NetWare Lite)

Start: Both players must use the same version of Battle Ship:
Both use either 'SHIPS.EXE' or 'SHIPSIPX.EXE'.

              SHIPS.EXE
The first player starts the game by calling
                    "SHIPS [language]" (e.g. "SHIPS FR")
he/she will be prompted for the other player's name.
                  The default language is English.

To determine the supported languages check the
SHIPS???.MSG files, where "???" represents the
language ('US': English; 'FR': French; 'GR':
                  German);

The second player will receive a game request as a
                  broadcast message on his/her screen.
If the partner does not receive this request, try
entering 'CASTON' on both PCs before starting the
                  game.

The second player can now enter "SHIPS [language]"
and will automatically be connected to the first player.

              SHIPSIPX.EXE
The first player starts the game by calling
                    "SHIPSIPX [language]" (e.g. "SHIPSIPX GR")
                  The default language is English.

The second player can now enter "SHIPSIPX [language]"
and will automatically be connected to the first player.

Both players must reside on the same LAN segment
                  (cable).

Play: The left screen displays your field with randomly
distributed 'battle ships'. The right screen
displays the area where you have to locate your
                partner's ships.

The game stops if one player has located all ships,
gives up, or aborts the game with <ESC>.

The position of your own ships can be modified with
<F6> until your partner made the first move.

Sound: Sound effects can be switched on/off with <F5>

SHIPS History: - 1st version March 92
                - 2nd version April 92
                  multiple games; allows rearranging of ships;
                - 3rd version June 92
easy start (no Connection ID, no need to have default
drive on common server), better monochrome support
                - 4th version August 92
IPX version available; multi language support

Multi-Language Support:
The messages for SHIPS/SHIPSIPX are stored in a separate file
and are loaded during start-up. SHIPS/SHIPSIPX allow a command
line parameter that specifies the desired language.

Each player may choose a different language.

The command line parameter is a one or two character acronym
representing the language. SHIPS comes with message files for
            US english US (default)
            German GR
            French FR

If you want to start SHIPS with French messages you can enter
            "SHIPS FR" or "SHIPSIPX FR"
No language parameter is needed to get English messages.

To add a message file for a new language create a new ASCII
file with the name "SHIPS???.MSG" where '???' stands for the
       new language.
       - The number before each line represents the maximum string
length and must not be modified.
       - The string must be enclosed in quotation marks and it's
length should not exceed the specified maximum length.
       - Empty lines or lines beginning with ';' are comments.
