This SMC EtherCard PLUS Elite32 Driver Diskette contains the following files:
!SMC0110.CFG -EISA Configuration File (required to configure the Elite32
board in an EISA system).
SMCE32.LAN -NetWare 3.1x ODI Server Driver.
SMCE32W.COM -NetWare ODI Workstation Driver.
NET.CFG -Sample configuration file for an ODI Workstation Driver.
README.EXE -Program to enable you to display the text you are now reading.
CONF_TST.EXE -Diagnostic utility to test board integrity.
RELEASE.DOC -Text file detailing the revision history of the drivers on
this disk.
Installing the Elite32 Board and Configuring Your EISA Machine
When installing an Elite32 board, please make sure that the slot you have
selected supports bus-mastering. The EISA Configuration Utility supplied with
your machine should issue a warning message if you attempt to install the
Elite32 in any other type of slot.
When initially powering up your EISA machine after installing the Elite32,
your system should be able to detect the presence of a new EISA board and
indicate that you are to run the EISA Configuration Utility. Typically, when
you run the EISA Configuration Utility (generally named CF.EXE), you will see
that the Elite32 board has been "auto-added" for the chosen slot.
Although the IRQ is automatically selected, it may be overridden by choosing
the "Change Resource" function. Channel A defaults to the non-AUI port
(twisted pair or coax). Therefore, if you prefer to use the AUI port for
Channel A, you must select that option. If you make changes to the default
configuration, be sure to choose the "Save Changes" option before exiting this
utility.
NetWare 3.1x Server Driver (SMCE32.LAN)
The server driver is to be loaded once to utilize Channel A, or a second time
to utilize both Channels (A and B). Note that if only one Channel is to be
used, it MUST be Channel A. Attempting to load the driver for Channel B before
Channel A will result in an error. If loading the driver for both Channels,
please make sure that a properly terminated cable is attached to each
connector.
This driver supports all four standard Ethernet frame types as listed below:
ETHERNET_802.3 (default)
ETHERNET_802.2
ETHERNET_II
ETHERNET_SNAP
The command line syntax used to load the driver is:
LOAD C:SMCE32 PORT=<port address> FRAME=<frame type>
When loading the driver multiple times for multiple frame types, it is
important to specify the port address of the board/channel being used. The
port address is comprised of the number of the slot containing the board
followed by a fixed offset. The port offsets are 810 and 820 for Channel A
and Channel B, respectively. For example, if the Elite32 board is installed
in Slot 6, the driver would be loaded with a port address of 6810 for
Channel A and 6820 for Channel B.
NetWare ODI Workstation Driver (SMCE32W.COM)
With the current implementation of the ODI workstation driver, only Channel A
can be used. A sample NET.CFG file is provided on this disk to assist in
configuring the driver.
The CONF_TST Utility Test Program
The SMC CONF_TST.EXE Utility tests the LAN hardware for general functionality.
Before running the program, please make sure that the Channel to be tested
(A and/or B) is properly terminated. If this is not done, the test will fail.
Note that a Channel on the Elite32T is terminated by connecting the board to a
concentrator with a UTP cable. Also, after executing CONF_TST.EXE, a warm or
cold boot on the server and/or workstation should be performed before the
driver is loaded.
