IBM's half-high 5.25-inch form factor Magneto Optical disk drives provide
1.3 GB per cartridge of optical storage. They support rewritable and full
CCW operations, with performance specifications among the highest avail-
able in their class. IBM now adds ablative write once capability to its
half-high Imagestar series, giving true multi-functionality on a single
drive. These optical disk drives can be installed in workstations, mini-
computers and automated optical disk libraries that support the small
computer system interface (SCSI-2)
The Imagestar series of high capacity storage devices read and write to
removable 5.25-inch cartridges containing industry-standard Magneto
Optical (MO) rewritable or continuous composite write-once (CCW) disks
with either 512-byte or 1024-byte sector size. Model CHC additionally
reads and writes to removable 5.25-inch ablative write once, 1024-byte
sector size disks. These disks can be either 595 or 650 MB capacity or
the new 1.2 GB and 1.3 GB double capacity disks.
Imagestar optical drives serve the demanding requirements of graphic
design, CAD/CAM, multimedia, animation, and digital video applications.
The high-performance characteristics of the 0632 optical drives make them
particularly well-suited as removable storage accessories for data-
intensive workstation and personal computer applications.
Each Imagestar model is available with several options. CHx drives
feature an IBM segmented read/write cache with read ahead support for
high speed read/write performance in a variety of environments. A 4 MB
read write cache is optional for models CHA and CHB. All Imagestar
drives contain an autowrite calibration sequence, a feature unique to
IBM optical drives. This function optimizes the laser power used for
read/write and seek operations to provide enhanced performance across a
wide range of environments and media characteristics.
Models CHB and CHC have been fortified with a heavy-duty loader mech-
anism and rapid eject motion for the demanding requirements of jukebox
environments. In addition, the drives have a special interface to permit
synchronizing the jukebox and drive during load/unload operations.
With a 500,000 load/unload specification, the reliability of the
Imagestar 0632-CHB and CHC make them ideal for data-intensive mass
storage applications.
