AN OEM OFFERING FROM IBM
The IBM 5 1/4-Inch Multifunction Optical Drive offers maximum flexibility
in supporting the broadest range of industry-standard optical media,
including rewritable and full ablative WORM, in capacities up to 1.3 GB.
To provide a transition path to full ablative WORM, the drive also reads
CCW WORM media written by other systems. Previous investments in
single-density media are protected, while allowing users to take
advantage of newer, double-density technology.
Write Once Read Many (WORM) is a frequently used term in optical data
storage, however not all WORMs are the same! This drive features support
of ablative or "true" WORM. In this process, pits are physically burned
into the substrate of the media creating a permanent irreversible change.
In contrast, CCW WORM uses a system of firmware locks to prevent
overwriting. While this may be adequate for some applications, ablative
WORM offers the assurance of data protection at the highest level. With
the 0632, users can take advantage of the technology best suited to their
needs.
With industry-leading reliability specifications, the 0632 Optical Drive
family is particularly suited to the demanding requirements of storage
libraries. For enhanced performance in jukeboxes, these drive have an
additional interface to synchronize the jukebox and drive during
load/unload operations. A 256 KB read-ahead buffer and cache further
improve data transfer performance.
As with previous models of the 0632, a key feature is the autowrite
calibration sequence. Unique to IBM, this feature optimizes the laser
power used for read/write operations to ensure consistently high
performance across a wide range of environmental conditions and media
characteristics.
The IBM 5 1/4-Inch Rewritable and WORM Optical Cartridge have been
specially developed and tested for optimum performance when used with
the 0632 optical drive family.
The customer should verify the usability of non-IBM brand optical media
prior to use in the Multifunction Optical Disk Drive
