Introduction | +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Welcome to Volume #4 of PCBoard Cracked PPE's. The goal of something such as this is to provide the public with nag-free shareware PPE's. The original shareware PPE's typically are not worth the outrageous money the authors are asking for them, hence deserved to have their "protection" removed. This volume contains PPE's from two such shareware authors: "Equinox Software" and "Wild PPE Productions". Each PPE was "decompiled" using either PPLX or PPLD. Thanks to the respective authors of each for the corresponding utility. +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | 2. PPE Listing | +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ All zip files were originally downloaded from SALT-AIR BBS. All PPE's have all unregistered messages, delays, and other limitiations removed. All PPE's have been recompiled using the earliest possible version of PPLC. This gives a "lowest common denominator" for sysops to actually use these, especially if they are still running an older version of PCBoard. Also, a noticeable difference in speed can be seen between PPE's that are compiled using PPLC v2.00 and v3.x. Equinox Software PPE's ====================== Description Version U.S.$ Filename (.zip) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The Complete File System v1.00 $20.00 eq_cfs10 Note: The 15 file area limit has been removed. The PPE will now display all file areas in the current conference. Complete Message System v1.07 $10.00 cms107 Note: This contains an "E"nter PPE as well as a "R"ead PPE. The read PPE is a blatant rip of a PWA PPE, right down to the ansi screen and even what is keyboard stuffed. Enter PROMPT Enhancer v3.21 $12.00 eq_eph Note: This is also a blatant rip of an old PWA PPE. Login v1.24 $12.00 eq_login MenuSelect v1.10 $18.00 menu110 NuFILES v1.02 $18.00 eq_nf1 NuScan v8.01 $12.00 nuscan8 PCBpage and PCBchat v1.02 $10.00 eq_p102 PCB SpellCheck v2.01 $40.00 spell201 Note: There is no limit to the number of nodes you can have (the original licensing allowed a 5 node version, 10 node version, etc.). The PPE will now use however many nodes your copy of PCBoard allows. Bugs found: If a word is not found in the dictionary, you can't pick "Ignore" and continue checking. The spell checker will ALWAYS start again from the beginning. Also, editing the text does not work either. Attribute this to shoddy programming. This Day in History v1.02 $15.00 tdih102 Turbo Login v1.10 $10.00 turbo110 Note: This can also be found in Cracked PPE's Volume #2 (filename pwapcp02.zip). PCBoard Tutorial v1.52 $20.00 tutor152 Note: This can also be found in Cracked PPE's Volume #1 (filename pwapcp01.zip). Installation | +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ To install, simply pick the PPE you wish to install, and copy over the old .ppe with the new one. The decompiled source code is also included in case you find the need to change something. +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | 4. Miscellaneous | +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ I personally have a gripe against the main author of Equinox Software's PPE's: Bill Masuka. He blatantly ripped off two of PWA's PPE's and does not acknowledge his immature act. It seems to me he is under the belief that if a PPE does not include an explicit disclaimer against decompiling, copying, redistributing, etc., he is free to do as he pleases with it. This is probably technically OK, but he then goes and charges money for his "work" that he stole! Another observation which leads me to believe he probably rips off many other PPE's is the fact that some of his PPE's use PPL 3.0 specific attributes (ie: functions and procedures), while others use only PPL 2.0. Surely, if he actually wrote all the PPE's him- self, he would write them in the same programming style. In other words, a programmer writes code in a consistent style in all the programs s/he writes. However, in Bill Masuka's case, I spotted stuff with and without functions/procedures... two very contrasting styles of programming. Bill Masuka then goes on in his code to try and protect his PPE's with a great deal of effort. In his code, there are file size checks, checksums and registration numbers generated from BBS and Sysop names, etc. His code even checks and deletes files ending in .PPD and .PPX as well as actually deleting PPLX.EXE! Come on Bill, why are you trying to protect something that you never wrote?! Basically, his crap is disgusting, and I pity the idiot who actually sent him money to register anything he has ripped off. Fortunately, with the aid of a couple of decompilers, all his precious work is now free for the taking, copying, spreading, using, and hopefully, someone else will also resell it. :) +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | 5. Join PWA! | +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Since the last person who I had assembling volumes of cracked PPE's was dropped from the group due to extreme nonfunctionality, I'm looking for another person to fill this role. If you're interested in doing this, drop me a note for more details. --Drew
