================================================================ Media Changer 1.0 for Windows NT/95 Shareware Edition Copyright (C) Swoosie Software 1995 by Mike Henderson and Gary Lucero ================================================================ What is Media Changer? Media Changer is a Win32 application that copies bitmaps, screen savers, and sounds from a specified directory or folder to your Windows or Windows\System directory. By selecting the files copied as your default wallpaper, screen saver, and system sounds, you can effortlessly have them changed each time you start your system. ================================================================ How to set it up: Just copy MCHANGER.EXE to whatever directory you'd like to keep it in. Place an icon or a shortcut (NT or 95) in your startup Program Group or folder. The first time you run MCHANGER.EXE, the program will produce an error message, and it will create a default MCHANGER.CFG file. This is your configuration file. This file must be kept in the same directory as MCHANGER.EXE. Edit MCHANGER.CFG with any standard text editor (NOTEPAD.EXE will do fine). Here's what each line of the configuration file does: bmp=c:\media\bmp\ Path to wallpaper scr=c:\media\scr\ Path to screen savers *ast=c:\media\wav\awav\ Path to Asterisk sound *stp=c:\media\wav\swav\ Path to Critical Stop sound *def=c:\media\wav\dwav\ Path to Default sound *exc=c:\media\wav\ewav\ Path to Exclamation sound *ext=c:\media\wav\xwav\ Path to Exit Windows sound *qst=c:\media\wav\qwav\ Path to Question sound *srt=c:\media\wav\twav\ Path to Start Windows sound Change the text after the = sign (after bmp=, for instance) for each line, putting your own source directory for each of the type of media. Be sure to place back slashes after each directory name (bmp=c:\windows\, for instance). If you would like a particular type of media to be copied in random order (versus copying them in the order they are stored in the FAT), place an asterisk (*) before the corresponding line (*bmp=c:\windows\, for instance). If you would like to indicate an initial file to start the copying process, place that on the end of the line (*bmp=c:\windows\chord.wav, for example). If the filename is invalid, the provided path is invalid, or there are no media files corresponding to the line in the configuration file, Media Changer will issue an error message. ================================================================ How to Use It: Once your configuration file is set up, just run MCHANGER.EXE and files will be copied to the corresponding places. Here's where they are copied: Wallpaper and sounds Your Windows directory Screen savers Your Windows\System directory To choose the media files, open the Control Panel and choose the following files from the above directories: File Control Panel item/tab/control OS ---------------------------------------------------------------- bmp.bmp Display Properties/Background 95 Desktop/Wallpaper NT scr.scr Display Properties/Screen Saver 95 Desktop/Screen Saver* NT asterisk.wav Sounds/Asterisk 95 Sound/Asterisk NT stop.wav Sounds/Critical Stop 95 Sound/Critical Stop NT default.wav Sounds/Default sound 95 Sound/Default sound NT exclam.wav Sounds/Exclamation 95 Sound/Exclamation NT exit.wav Sounds/Exit Windows 95 Sound/Exit Windows NT question.wav Sounds/Question 95 Sound/Question NT * Windows NT does not show the actual filename of the screen saver in the Desktop Control Panel item. In order to know which screen saver to choose, do one of the following: 1) If you are using an alternate directory or folder as your screen saver source, move or delete all of the screen savers out of the Windows\System directory except for scr.scr. Now, when you go to select a screen saver, there will only be one in the list. Choose it, then move your other .scr files back. OR 2) If you use your Windows\System directory as the source, open the Desktop Control Panel item, and then click on the Screen Saver combo box. Look for a screen saver name that is duplicated. Choose the first occurence of the duplicate-named screen saver. NOTE: Normally Media Changer will NOT copy the file listed in the configuration file. The file listed there is the current file (if the file was chosen by Media Changer) or the initial file (all subsequentially chosen files are based on this one) if you chose it. To copy the initial file to your Windows and/or Windows\System directories, run Media Changer once with the following command line parameter: MCHANGER.EXE -C The -c option will force Media Changer to copy the initial file if one is indicated. This means even if the media is marked as random, only the file indicated will be copied. If no initial file is indicated, the first file of the correct type in the indicated directory will be chosen. ================================================================ How to Register It: Media Changer is Shareware.
