The problem is most common on networks that interact with a UNIX system. The following is a partial list of networks that experience this problem: Network Manufacturer ------- ------------ 10-Net 10-Net Communications PC-NFS Sun Microsystems, Inc. VINES Banyan Systems, Inc. StarLAN AT&T Note: Version 2.00a of Novell NetWare also exhibits this problem; this is discussed in detail in the last section of this application note. This error occurs only if the workstation is running DOS version 3.30. The error does not occur if the workstation is running DOS 3.20. To correct this problem, use the FIXNET.BAT utility in the included files. There are three included files: WORD50.EXE, WORD5A.EXE, and NOV201-4.EXE (discussed later). If you have Word version 5.00, use the copy of FIXNET.BAT from the WORD50.EXE file. If you have Word version 5.00A, use the copy of FIXNET.BAT from the WORD5A.EXE file. To extract the information within any of these files, simply execute them at an DOS Prompt. There are two ways to identify which version of Word you are using: 1. Check the initial screen displayed when starting Word. It will display either "Version 5.0" or "Version 5.0A". 2. While using Word, choose Options and then press the ENTER key. Either "Microsoft Word Version 5.0" or "Microsoft Word Version 5.0A" will display on the status line. Installation ------------ The WORD.EXE file is most likely a read-only file. Before executing the FIXNET.BAT file, you must make the WORD.EXE file read/write. To do this, type ATTRIB -R WORD.EXE from the Word program directory. Copy the appropriate file (WORD50.EXE or WORD5A.EXE) into a working directory. Run it at a DOS prompt to uncompress the information within. Using the appropriate copy of FIXNET.BAT, type FIXNET \WORD.EXE where represents the location of the Word executable file. If you are still experiencing problems saving/loading files to/from the server after you have executed the FIXNET.BAT file, you can run UNFIXNET.BAT to undo the patch. The syntax for this command is as follows: UNFIXNET \WORD.EXE This command returns the WORD.EXE file to its original state. NOVELL 2.00A ------------ Disclaimer ---------- The 2.01-4 Workstation Shell for Novell NetWare 2.00a is provided through the courtesy of Novell. Microsoft is not liable for any problems resulting from the files mentioned below and will not provide support for them. If you have any problems with the patch, DO NOT contact Microsoft -- contact Novell Advanced Technical Services at (800) 526-7937. You may receive the error message "Word disk full" when you try to start Word on Novell NetWare version 2.00a and have installed a Novell Workstation Shell earlier than version 2.01-4. The FIXNET patch will not correct the problem. The problem is resolved on Novell NetWare 2.00a ONLY by updating the version of the Workstation Shell to 2.01-4. To find the workstation shell version being used, change to the directory where the file ANET3.COM is located, type the following at the prompt, and press ENTER: ANET3 i A message similar to the following will appear: Advanced NetWare V2.XX-X rev. X - Workstation Shell for PC-DOS V3.x (C) Copyright 1983, 1988 Novell, Inc. All Rights Reserved. The number on the first line represents the shell version and revision release. 2.00a, 2.00a ++, 2.01-1, 2.01-2, 2.01-3, and 2.01-4 are all valid workstation shell version numbers. Note: With versions 2.10 and later of Novell NetWare, the command used to identify the shell version is NET3 i. However, there have been no reported difficulties with workstation shells for other versions of Novell NetWare. Generating the Shell -------------------- Before starting shell generation, copy SHELLDRV.OBJ to a separate temporary working directory than you create. SHELLDRV.OBJ is the driver file for the network card and should be included on the Novell GENSH-2 disk. Copy the NOV201-4.EXE file into your working directory. Run it at the DOS prompt to uncompress the information within. With all files uncompressed and SHELLDRV.OBJ copied into your working directory, type the following and press ENTER: NLINK ANET3 ANET3 SHELLDRV At the next DOS prompt, type the following and press ENTER: ZAPSH ANET3 This will create a working ANET3.COM shell in your working directory. File Contents (when uncompressed): ---------------------------------- WORD50.EXE BYTEFIX.EXE FIXNET.BAT UNFIXNET.BAT WORD5A.EXE BYTEFIX.EXE FIXNET.BAT UNFIXNET.BAT NOV201-4.EXE NLINK.EXE ZAPSH.EXE ANET3.EXE ANET3.OBJ Any questions or problems with shell generation should be referred to Novell Advanced Technical Services at (800) 526-7937.
