Welcome to Microsoft Management Console

Microsoft® Management Console (MMC) is a console that provides a framework for network administration programs. The console hosts programs (called snap-ins) that administrators can use to manage their networks. MMC provides a common framework in which the snap-ins can run, helping administrators manage their network products within a single integrated interface.

In addition to providing a common framework that integrates administrative tools, MMC also helps administrators customize the console for different purposes. Administrators can choose and load specific snap-ins to create a management console with the specific administrative tools they need to accomplish specific administrative objectives.

Future releases of Windows NT® and all BackOffice® products, as well as third-party networking products, will include MMC snap-ins as their administrative programs.

This documentation contains:

  • About Microsoft Management Console: A brief overview of, uses for, and benefits of MMC.
  • Step-by-step procedures: Procedures for performing common tasks in MMC.

This documentation does not contain information on any specific snap-ins; for that information, see the Help for the individual snap-in.
