Internet Mail Service

Microsoft Exchange Server provides connectivity to the Internet and other systems using Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP). The connector, called the Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service, provides access and message exchange to and from any system that uses SMTP.

The Internet Mail Service is fully integrated with Microsoft Exchange Server and the Microsoft Windows NT Server. It is configured using the Microsoft Exchange Server Administrator program. You can administer the Internet Mail Service from any Windows NT Server that is part of your local area network (LAN).
