Configuration Tasks

If you are installing Microsoft Exchange Server in a Novell NetWare environment, you must:

Install the SAP agent.   The service access point (SAP) agent must be running on your Microsoft Exchange Server computer if you are integrating Novell NetWare clients with Microsoft Exchange Server, and your Microsoft Exchange Server computer is not on the same local area network (LAN) segment as a NetWare server.

Ensure that NetBIOS is installed.   The Microsoft Exchange Server computer must support network basic input/output system (NetBIOS). For more information, see your Windows NT documentation.

Configure Ethernet frame types.   If you configured multiple frame types for the Windows NT NWLink protocol, or if more than one network card is installed on a Microsoft Exchange Server computer, set the internal network number to a unique number other than zero.

Enable file scan on NetWare servers.   Microsoft Outlook Calendar cannot support certain file operations for Novell NetWare servers that have file scan disabled (scan_off). If you want users to store schedule backups, archives, or other data, enable file scan on the shares where the data is stored.

Install the Gateway (and Client) Services for NetWare.   To optimize mail delivery performance on servers using the Internetwork Packet Exchange/Sequenced Packet Exchange (IPX/SPX) protocol, install the Gateway (and Client)Services for NetWare on the Windows NT Server computer.

Installing the SAP Agent

To ensure that Microsoft Outlook clients on NetWare networks can locate a Microsoft Exchange Server computer, you may need to install and configure the SAP agent on your Microsoft Exchange Server computer.

The SAP agent is required in the following cases:

If your network is using a routed topology and the Microsoft Exchange Server computer is not on the same LAN segment as a NetWare server, any routers must be configured to pass SAP 0x640 through the router. The Microsoft Exchange Server computer uses SAP 0x640 to notify the NetWare servers of its presence. If a router does not pass the SAP agent, Microsoft Outlook clients cannot access the Microsoft Exchange Server computer.

  1. In Control Panel, choose Network, and then select the Services tab.
  2. Choose Add.
  3. Under Network Service, select SAP Agent, and then choose OK.
  4. When you are prompted to restart the computer, Choose Yes.

Configuring Ethernet Frame Types for Windows NT Server Computers

If multiple frame types are configured for the Windows NT NWLink protocol or if more than one network card is installed in your server, set the internal network number for the Windows NT Server computer in the NWLink IPX/SPX Protocol properties dialog box. This number must be unique and have a value other than zero.

Note   Make sure the frame type is the same on the client (in the Net.cfg file) and server.

  1. In Control Panel, choose Network, and then select the Protocols tab.
  2. Under Network Protocols, select NWLink IPX/SPX Compatible Transport.
  3. Choose Properties.
  4. Select Manual Frame Type Detection, choose Add, and then select the frame type used on your LAN.
  5. If multiple frame types are configured, set the internal network number for the Windows NT Server computer to a unique number other than zero.
  6. Windows NT prompts you to restart the computer so that the changes take effect. Choose Yes to restart the computer.

Enabling File Scan on NetWare Servers

As mentioned earlier, Microsoft Outlook Calendar does not support several file operations for Novell NetWare servers that have file scan disabled. You should enable file scan on shares where users are expected to store schedule backups, archives, and other data.

If a NetWare server has file scan disabled and Read, Create, Write, and Modification permissions, users can:

Users cannot:

If the user attempts any of these operations on a NetWare server when file scan is disabled, Microsoft Outlook Calendar displays the following error message:

"Cannot access this file..."

Installing the Gateway (and Client) Services for NetWare Connections

If your Microsoft Outlook clients are communicating with the Microsoft Exchange Server computer using IPX/SPX, you must install the Gateway (and Client) Services for NetWare on the server. Installing this software ensures optimal delivery performance.

  1. In Control Panel, choose Network, and then select the Services tab.
  2. Choose Add.
  3. Under Network Service, select Gateway (and Client) Services for NetWare, and then choose OK.
  4. Type the path to your original Windows NT compact disc, and then choose Continue.
  5. You may be prompted for information specific to your configuration.
  6. Choose Close and restart your computer.
