CONTENTS ======== ISDN ACCELERATOR PACK FUNCTIONALITY INSTALLING AND CONFIGURING ISDN ACCELERATOR PACK MAKING A CONNECTION WITH YOUR ISDN ADAPTER CHANGING SETTINGS FOR YOUR ISDN ADAPTER KNOWN PROBLEMS TECHNICAL SUPPORT INFORMATION ISDN ACCELERATOR PACK FUNCTIONALITY =================================== This release includes the support necessary for making remote access connections over an ISDN line. Although it's already possible to use ISDN on a PC, special ISDN programs are required to take advantage of it. The addition to the operating system of support for ISDN dramatically broadens the range of programs available. Instead of requiring specialized programs that work only with ISDN, users will be able to run any networked Windows-based program over ISDN. This release provides all the support needed for a program to initiate remote connections exactly as would be done by using a modem. This release works with drivers for some specific ISDN adapters; in addition, many other drivers are being developed and will be available soon. For information about when additional drivers will be available, contact your ISDN hardware vendor. This release can be used only for data transmission. Microsoft does not currently support voice or other types of ISDN access. Both Voice support and Multilink capability are planned for an upcoming release. INSTALLING AND CONFIGURING ISDN ACCELERATOR PACK ================================================ TO INSTALL, REFER TO THE HARDWARE MANUFACTURER'S INSTALL.TXT FILE, OR RUN THE HARDWARE MANUFACTURER'S SETUP PROGRAM. Before you install, make sure have the following: 1. A supported ISDN adapter. 2. An ISDN line installed. 3. Your switch type, SPIDs, and phone numbers from your telephone company. If you do not have this information, get it from your telephone company before continuing. 4. ISDN Accelerator Pack software and a driver for your specific hardware. 5. A PC running the released version of Microsoft® Windows® 95. 6. Dial-Up Networking installed. If you do not have it installed, you can install it by using Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel as follows: * In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon. * Click the Windows Setup tab. * Click the Communications check box, and then click Details. * Click the Dial-Up Networking checkbox, and then click OK. * To finish installing Dial-up Networking, click OK. Note that you may be asked to insert your Windows 95 floppy disks or CD. MAKING A CONNECTION WITH YOUR ISDN ADAPTER ========================================== After you have successfully installed the adapter and restarted your computer without any error messages, you are ready to create a Dial-Up Networking ISDN connection. Make sure that you have installed the cables provided with your adapter, that the line indicators are good on the NT-1 (if an NT-1 is required with your adapter), and that the line is active. Dial-up Networking should already be installed on your computer. To create a connection: * Start Dial-Up Networking as follows: * Click Start, and then point to Programs. * Point to Accessories, and then click Dial-Up Networking. * If the Make New Connection wizard does not automatically start, double-click the Make New Connection icon. * On the first screen, fill in the name of your new connection. In the Select A Modem list, choose your ISDN adapter, and then click Next. * Fill in the area code, phone number, and country code for the computer you want to call, and then click Next. * Click Finish. * You can now make a connection over your ISDN line by double-clicking the icon you just created, entering your account name and password, and then clicking Connect. CHANGING SETTINGS FOR YOUR ISDN ADAPTER ======================================= After you have successfully configured your ISDN adapter, you may want to change your configuration settings. To change settings, carry out the following procedure: * Right-click any Dial-Up Networking ISDN connection icon, such as the one created in the previous procedure. * Click Properties, and then click Configure. * Click Advanced and then change the configuration settings. To configure networking protocols or unusual TCP/IP settings, carry out the following procedure: * Right-click any Dial-Up Networking connection icon, such as the one created in the previous procedure. * Click Properties, click the Server Type button, and then click TCP/IP Settings. KNOWN PROBLEMS ============== Shadowing in Gateway Computers with an AMI BIOS Must Be Turned Off ------------------------------------------------------------------ If you have a Gateway computer with an AMI BIOS and shadowing is turned on for the ranges of memory that the Digi PCIMAC board uses for its shared memory, the PCIMAC board will fail when it attempts to access the shadowed memory. To correct this problem, turn off shadowing. Eicon PCMCIA may not work on all laptops ---------------------------------------- If your Eicon PCMCIA adapter does not work on your laptop, call the support number that was included with your Eicon adapter. Digi 128K will not work if Voice-only channel is configured ----------------------------------------------------------- If one of the channels of your ISDN line is provisioned for Voice only, and you want to use Digi's 128K bonding, do not enter the voice phone number and SPID during installation and configuration. Enter only the phone numbers and SPIDs that have Data only, or Voice and Data capability. TCP, IPX, or NetBEUI Protocol Is Needed --------------------------------------- Although NDISWAN shows up as a protocol, you still need to have TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, or NetBEUI installed. Dial-Up Server For ISDN Is Not Supported ---------------------------------------- The Dial-Up Server is not supported over ISDN for this release. Your ISDN device will not be available with the Dial-Up Server. You will still be able to use Dial-Up Server with your modem. Exchange over ISDN in Connected Mode May Hang on Disconnect ----------------------------------------------------------- If you are running Exchange over ISDN in connected mode rather than using the remote mail feature, your computer may hang when you disconnect, even if you close Exchange before disconnecting. This is because MAPI stays in memory for 30 seconds after Exchange is closed. To avoid this problem, wait 30 seconds after you exit Exchange before you disconnect. USR Turbo PPP Should Not Be Used with Some Servers -------------------------------------------------- If Turbo PPP is enabled in the USR driver, your Windows 95 client might not work well with certain kinds of PPP servers. If you have difficulty interoperating with a PPP server, disable Turbo PPP, and then try again. Reconnection May Fail After First Connection with Digi PCIMAC ------------------------------------------------------------- If you establish a connection to MSN or to the Internet, then break that connection and try to reconnect, you may see the following error message: "The computer you're dialing in to does not respond to a network request. Check your server type setting". To correct this problem, restart your computer, and then make the connection. If this happens, contact Digi. Previous Installations Must Be Removed -------------------------------------- If you have a previous (beta) installation of the ISDN Accelerator Pack software, you will need to remove the old installation before installing this release. To do this: * Double-click the Network icon in Control Panel. * Click your ISDN adapter in the list (NOT Dial-Up Adapter). * Click Remove, and then click OK. * When asked if you want to restart your computer, click No. * Remove all beta files (both Microsoft files and your hardware vendor files) from your system. Each beta site should have received instructions or a utility program to do this. * Restart your computer. * Proceed with new installation. TECHNICAL SUPPORT INFORMATION ============================= Product Support Services (PSS) does not support the installation or configuration of ISDN drivers. Support for installation comes from the Independent Hardware Vendors for the adapter obtained by the customer. PSS does support normal Dial-Up Networking issues. This means that PSS supports configuring the Dial-Up properties including Server Type settings for the connections made in the Dial-Up Networking dialog box. Support for ISDN will follow the Windows 95 Connectivity Support which is Paid Support Only.
