Migrating from WinCat 2.x to WinCat/PRO 3.x =========================================== This document describes the actions you must take when you're currently using WinCat 2.x, and want to install and use WinCat/PRO 3.x. Please read this document before you start installing WinCat/PRO ! When installing WinCat/PRO 3.x you must perform the following tasks : - Backup your current WinCat 2.x files - Erase the WinCat 2.x files - Install the WinCat/PRO 3.x files - Test WinCat/PRO 3.x with the sample catalog SAMPLE.CAT - Convert your own WINCAT.CAT catalog to the new format required by WinCat/PRO 3.x Below these tasks are explained in detail. I assume you have your current WinCat 2.x installed in it's own directory : C:\WINDOWS\WINCAT\. 1) Create a backup copy of all your WinCat 2.x files that are in the WinCat directory. Just copy them to a temporary directory or a floppy disk. 2) Delete the following WinCat 2.x files : WINCAT.EXE WINCAT.DOC WINCATDS.DLL WINCATPR.DLL WINCATAR.DLL WINCATCA.DLL WINCATRS.PIF WINCATRS.BAT READ.ME 3DLABEL.VBX (DON'T delete the catalog file WINCAT.CAT !) 3) Extract WINCAT32.ARJ into C:\WINDOWS\WINCAT\ The following files will be created : WINCAT.EXE - The WinCat program WINCAT.INI - Default settings & associations WINCAT.DOC - WinCat user guide WINCAT.WNT - Overview of WinCat's features WINCATAR.DLL - WinCat's Archive Scan routines WINCATRS.PIF - PIF that WinCat uses to launch WINCATRS.BAT. WINCATRS.BAT - BAT that WinCat uses to execute DOS unarchive utilities (like ARJ, LHA, PKUNZIP etc.) SAMPLE.CAT - A sample catalog CONVERT.EXE - Catalog conversion program CONVERT.DOC - This document AIDWARE.DOC - Explains the AidWare concept (read this !) ORDERFRM.DOC - How to order your WinCat/PRO license (read this too !) README.DOC - For turbo-installers who never read DOC files QUEST.DOC - WinCat Questionaire QUEST.WRI - Questionaire in Windows Write format BUGSFIXD.DOC - Summary of bugs that have been eliminated (*)BWCC.DLL - Runtime library needed by Turbo Pascal programs (*) BWCC.DLL is copyrighted by Borland International, but may be freely distributed. You'll possible have to move 2 of these files (WINCAT.INI and BWCC.DLL) to another directory : File WINCAT.INI is a default set of settings and associations used by WinCat. While using WinCat 2.x you probably defined your own settings and associations ; these were saved in file WINCAT.INI in directory C:\WINDOWS. If this is the case you don't need the default WINCAT.INI ; else move it to the C:\WINDOWS directory. File BWCC.DLL is a runtime library that's needed by all programs that were developed using Borland's Turbo Pascal for Windows compiler. This file must be moved to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. However, it's possible that there is already a BWCC.DLL present in this directory (put there by other programs that use it). If this is the case, replace that copy of BWCC.DLL ONLY if the one supplied with WinCat is from a more recent date. 4) Switch to the Windows Program Manager and start WinCat by clicking it's icon. Click the FILE menu on WinCat's primary window, and then select 'Open Catalog...'. The 'Open' dialog will show 2 files : WINCAT.CAT and SAMPLE.CAT. Select file SAMPLE.CAT and click OK. After WinCat has read this file you can have a first look at WinCat/PRO 3.x ! Note : before you can open and use file WINCAT.CAT you must convert it to the required 3.x catalog format. Read on : 5) After testing WinCat it's time to convert your own catalog to the new 3.x format with the supplied conversion program. Add CONVERT.EXE to a Windows program group. Make sure you specify 'C:\WINDOWS\WINCAT' as the working directory ! Also make sure that file WINCAT.CAT resides in the same directory as CONVERT.EXE ; else the conversion program can't find it, and will display the message 'unable to open catalog WINCAT.CAT'. Now start the CONVERT program by clicking it's icon. The conversion program reads your old catalog, verifies it's structure, and then creates a new catalog in WinCat/PRO format. This new catalog will be named WINPRO.CAT. Because WinCat/PRO uses a new, more efficient catalog structure the new catalog will be smaller than the old one ; typically, it's size decreases about 20 to 30%. 6) You can now start WinCat/PRO again, and use your own catalog WINPRO.CAT. 7) After you've tried WinCat/PRO, and decide to continue using it instead of the old WinCat 2.x, you can erase the old WINCAT.CAT catalog and the files CONVERT.EXE and CONVERT.DOC. 8) Have fun with WinCat/PRO ! PS -- Don't forget to read file AIDWARE.DOC ! It explains the AidWare concept, why WinCat is distributed as AidWare and what goal we 'WinCat users' are trying to achieve.
