AutoWinNet Winsock Client Application - AUTOWNET Copyright (C) 1994-1995 by David Smith and Jim Husband. All rights reserved. (PLEASE REVIEW THE ENTIRE CONTENTS OF THIS FILE) This archive contains the BBS version of AutoWinNet. Because of size consideration, there is a file missing (described below). You can obtain this file via World Wide Web by visiting: http://www.computek.net/autownet It's free, so download it today! AutoReply (automated mail responder) Automate your mail by looking for "keywords", then responding with a variety of customizable actions: a. Send back a message b. Send back a binary or text file (as an attachment) 100% compatible with most mail programs c. Add person to a mailbox d. Add person to a mailing list e. Forward the message to another E-Mail address f. Send a help file, containing all the possible commands they can use on your mail site In addition, you can browse the messages that come through, transfer them to different mailboxes, and read everything offline. No need to scrounge through your mail program, sorting messages, transferring them, responding with boring, tedious attachments and standard messages. Do everything OFFLINE! QUICK START GUIDE ----------- HOW TO INSTALL! ---------------------------------------- 1. Create a new AutoWinNet directory 2. Unzip the PKZIP file into that directory 3. Create an icon for the two .EXE files, help file, etc.. and setup the program by chosing CONFIGURATION 4. Unzip CTL3DV2.ZIP into your WINDOWS/SYSTEM directory. This is vitally important: if you will get errors and ugly dialogs if you don't have that CTL3DV2.DLL in your windows/system directory. 5. Dial and connect with your SLIP/PPP provider using a Winsock dialer program, such as Trumpet Winsock's TCPMAN.EXE, or Internet in a Box's AIRDIAL.EXE. If you don't have Trumpet Winsock, you can get a copy from ftp.trumpet.com.au in the /ftp/pub/winsock directory. The usual filename is in the format: TWSCK??.ZIP If you are not dialed in, connected and logged in, this program will not work. For DETAILED instructions on how to run your agendas automated, visit: http://www.computek.net/autownet/problem.html ----------- HOW DO I RUN THIS AUTOMATED? ------------------------------ To run an agenda without being home, (pro version only), specify the agenda you want to run on the command line. OR just schedule several agendas to run using the RUN LATER button. For example, add: AUTOWNET.EXE MYAGENDA to your scheduler program. This will run MYAGENDA agenda at whatever time you specify. If you don't have a scheduler program, use AutoWinNet's RUN LATER button. If you're running Internet in a Box, your dialer will load automatically, and log you into the Internet. If you use Trumpet Winsock's TCPMAN.EXE, make sure that TCPMAN.EXE, LOGIN.CMD, TWINSOCK.INI and TRUMWSK.INI are in your Windows directory! Otherwise, he doesn't work. When AUTOWINnet is done, he will unload himself, along with the dialing program, and your Winsock. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you use Trumpet Winsock, make sure to go into DIALLER/OPTIONS and check LOGIN AND LOGOUT ON DEMAND so he hangs up when exiting. ----------- POSSIBLE SETUP PROBLEMS ---------------------------------- The official AutoWinNet support phone: 1-500-776-SMITH (leave your email address if I'm not home) or our problem/questions homepage: http://www.computek.net/autownet/problem.html PARADOX ERROR 144 / MISCELLANEOUS PARADOX ERRORS - You already have a PARADOX engine setup inside WIN.INI. Open notepad and edit WIN.INI, renaming any previous paradox statements. DOES NOT WORK WITH TIA - T.I.A. is a program that emulates SLIP account access on a SHELL account. This don't work with AutoWinNet! Please get a PPP/SLIP account, then try this program again... I KEEP GETTING "CTL3DV2.DLL NOT CORRECTLY INSTALLED" ERRORS Unzip CTL3DV2.ZIP into your WINDOWS/SYSTEM directory. This is vitally important: if you will get errors and ugly dialogs if you don't have that CTL3DV2.DLL in your windows/system directory. DO NOT UNZIP IT INTO THE AUTOWINNET DIRECTORY! Ctl3dv2.dll is very picky about where it should be. Only one copy should exist on your hard drive: in your Windows/system directory. ----------- YOUR FIRST AGENDA ---------------------------------------- Choose ONLINE OPERATIONS from the main menu Select FIRST AGENDA Click RUN at the bottom of the dialog You'll see AutoWinNet ftp to oak.oakland.edu and retrieve a couple of file lists. He is collecting the contents of oak.oakland.edu's /SimTel/win3 directory (the cool Windows shareware!) ----------- AFTER AGENDA IS DONE ------------------------------------- Choose VIEW OR EDIT AGENDAS from the main menu Double click FIRST AGENDA (or press EDIT) Press FTP Highlight oak.oakland.edu in the left listbox (that's the site you just visited) Now press DOWNLOAD You will see a list of all the files he just found in /SimTel/win3 To download any of these, just highlight them and press SELECT ----------- HOW DO I DOWNLOAD FILES? ------------------------------------- Select them, and then press SELECT. Those files will be downloaded the next time you run that agenda! ----------- WHAT'S SO COOL ABOUT AutoWinNet? ---------------------------- Many enhancements added in version 1.9! If you don't have a WINSOCK.DLL, I'd suggest getting the free one from Microsoft or the shareware Trumpet Winsock from ftp.trumpet.com.au. AutoWinNet requires a minimum of a 286 processor. YOU MUST HAVE A PROPERLY INSTALLED WINSOCK.DLL FOR THIS APPLICATION TO WORK. REFER TO YOUR WINSOCK.DLL DOCUMENTATION FOR SETUP! WEIRD PROBLEMS AND QUESTIONS: ============================== Here at AutoWinNet support (it's just me, Dave Smith over here), I get a lot of weird questions. In an attempt to disuade these from continually flooding in, I am providing the most common weird questions and my answers: Q. The AUTOWNET.EXE doesn't work at all (I'm running the 32-bit Winsock which came with Windows 95) A. You must rename all your WINSOCK.DLL's except for the default one shipped with Windows 95 (42,080 size). Then it works great. Q. What is your E-Mail address? A. physics@computek.net Q. I try mail-bombing you using AutoWinNet, but it doesn't work. A. That's right. You cannot E-Mail me a message using AutoWinNet (gee, I wonder why), so please use your regular mail program. Q. I want to use AutoWinNet to spam all 12,000 newsgroups with a great "MAKE MONEY FAST" pyramid scheme. Is that possible? A. Yes, however please include your E-Mail address at the bottom of the Usenet post, so that all our nice patrons on the Internet may respond to your great offer. Q. I would like to register AutoWinNet, but before I do, I want it to download 7,000+ files at one time, support long filenames, break through all security on FTP sites, sort out my web pages, and download all web pages specified in this file, then download all un-downloaded files from these 5,000 FTP sites. A. I'm sorry, but AutoWinNet only does what it does. We do plan to expand it in version 2.0 (due out next year sometime), but both of us have full time jobs, and real lives. Q. Before I register AutoWinNet, I want to test out the sendmail, special services, and web download features to make sure they work. A. If we allowed those features in the shareware version, no one would register the product. I will be happy to give you 50 references of people that have used it, and can assure you these features work great. Q. Before I call the 1-500 number, ain't that a toll call? A. Yes, you will be charged AT&T long distance for the call (about 11-13 cents a minute. If you call, and get my answering machine: 1. Leave your e-mail address, so we may discuss things online. 2. Tell me I can call you back, COLLECT, and what time would be appropriate. I cannot call you back on my dime (I'd be broke within a week), since I am not a large corporation, and the couple of times I have called back on my dime, everybody wants to discuss the weather, how bad the Cowboys are playing this year, etc. =-=-=-= LEGAL STUFF - PLEASE READ (yes, I know its boring) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- CONCERNING SHAREWARE AND AUTOWINNET: Definition of Shareware. . . Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before buying it. If you try a shareware program and continue using it, you are expected to register it. Individual programs differ on details _ some request registration while others require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue using the software to an updated program with printed manual. Copyright laws apply to both shareware and commercial software, and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a specific group. For example, some authors require written permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their shareware. Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's commercial or shareware. The shareware system makes fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy. And because the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware has the ultimate money-back guarantee _ if you don't use the product, you don't pay for it. AutoWinNet is a copyrighted shareware program by David Smith and Jim Husband authors and members of the Association of Shareware Professionals. The evaluation edition of AutoWinNet is offered at no charge to any potential user for evaluation. Feel free to share the evaluation edition with your friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of another system. The essence of "user-supported" software is to provide personal computer users with quality software without high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to continue to develop new products. Ombudsman Statement. . . This program is produced by a member of the Association of Shareware Professionals (ASP). ASP wants to make sure that the shareware principle works for you. If you are unable to resolve a shareware- related problem with an ASP member by contacting the member directly, ASP may be able to help. The ASP Ombudsman can help you resolve a dispute or problem with an ASP member, but does not provide technical support for members' products. Please write to the ASP Ombudsman at 545 Grover Road, Muskegon, MI 49442 or send a CompuServe message via CompuServe Mail to ASP Ombudsman 70007,3536.
