Most clone mice will work with a Microsoft driver, so by using the Microsoft driver you may be able to solve these problems. If you have Windows 3.1 then you have the version 8.2 Microsoft mouse driver, however it is not usually installed during the Windows installation process. The driver is on disk 4 of the Windows installation disks, as the files MOUSE.SY_ and MOUSE.CO_. You can install either the .COM or SYS version depending on where you prefer to load your mouse driver. To install this version of the mouse driver onto your system, insert disk 4 into the floppy drive and type: expand a:mouse.sy_ mouse.sys or expand a:mouse.co_ mouse.com The mouse driver can now be installed by either adding the following line to your CONFIG.SYS device=mouse.sys Or by adding this line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT: mouse.com This assumes that MOUSE.SYS, or MOUSE.COM file resides in the root directory. If it is placed in any other directory, then the full path will need to precede the filename. Be sure to remove any other mouse drivers that you were loading in either CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT. To re-emphasize, substituting the mouse driver used on your system with the latest release from Microsoft will only work if your mouse hardware is truly compatible. Since this can be tested quickly, driver substitution may save you the time needed to contact either your computer's manufacturer or expense of replacing your mouse.
