Windows 3.x Configuration for the pcANYWHERE Host This section details the Windows 3.1 or Windows 3.11 configuration for the pcANYWHERE host. Choose Main from the Window menu of either the Program Manager or Norton Desktop. Double-click the Control Panel icon. Double-click Printers. Select a printer. Enable Set as Default Printer. Turn on Print Manager. Choose Connect. Set the printer port to LPT1.DOS under Ports. Set Fast Printing Direct to Port to On. Printing from a DOS Application under Windows 3.x Go to the DOS prompt. Open the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, using any text editor, by entering the following lines: CD\ Edit AUTOEXEC.BAT Add this line to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file: C:\WINAW\AW_HOST. If you want the DOS TSR to remain in the background, enter the line as follows: C:\WINAW\AW_HOST -M=A. Save the changes. Exit the text editor. Go to the DOS prompt. Open the SYSTEM.INI file, using any text editor, by entering the following lines: CD\WINDOWS edit SYSTEM.INI Locate the [386Enh] section of the SYSTEM.INI. Type a semicolon (;) next to the DEVICE=*VCD line. The line should now read: ;DEVICE=*VCD.386. Type the following line under the one you modified in Step 9: DEVICE=AW_VCD.386. Save the file. Exit the text editor. Go to the DOS prompt. Enter COPY C:\WINAW\AW_VCD.386 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM. Windows 95 Configuration for the pcANYWHERE Host This section details the pcANYWHERE host configuration for Windows 95. Go to the Start menu. Select Settings, Printers. Right-click the printer icon for the remote printer. Select Set as Default. Right-click the printer icon again. Choose Properties. Select the Details tab. (This option allows you to select, add, or delete a printer port.) Click Add Port, Other. Select Local Port. A prompt appears for the name of the port. Type LPT1.DOS. Click OK until the Properties menu appears. Click the End Capture button to end all network capturing. Click OK to end capturing for the network printer. (This step is essential for remote printing.) Select the Details tab. Click Spool Settings. Symantec Technical Support recommends the following settings: Spool Print Jobs (application prints faster) Start Printing after First Page is Spooled Spool Data Format: EMF Click OK to close the Properties dialog box. Printing from a DOS Application Under Windows 95 pcANYWHERE does not support printing from a DOS application under Windows 95. Configuring the Remote Computer This section details the pcANYWHERE for Windows setup on the remote PC. Follow these stepsregardless of which version of Windows you have installed on your system. Select Configure, Remote Operation. Choose Print Output Destination. Select one of the following choices, according to your preference: Remote Host Host and Remote Windows 3.x Configuration for the Remote This section details the Windows 3.1 or 3.11 setup on the remote PC. Choose Window, Main from either Program Manager or Norton Desktop. Double-click the Control Panel icon. Double-click Printers. Select a printer. Enable Set as Default Printer. Turn on the Print Manager. Choose Connect. Set the printer port to LPT1 under Ports. Set Fast Printing Direct to Port to On. Windows 95 Configuration for the Remote This section details the Windows 95 setup for remote printing on the remote PC. Go to the Start menu. Select Settings, Printers. Right-click the printer icon for the remote printer. Enable Set as Default. General Printing Troubleshooting If you are still having problems printing, try the troubleshooting tips in this sectionregardless of which version of Windows you have. Make sure the print job is not being redirected to a network print queue on the host. If it is, disable the network redirector prior to printing remotely. For example, under Novell, ENDCAP turns off CAPTURE. Both PCs should have the same printer driver selected. Both printer drivers should be the same revision number. The printer driver should be the latest revision available. Check with the modem manufacturer to verify the hardware flow control is On. pcANYWHERE releases the print job only when you double-click the online menu or when the session ends. Try a print test using the Epson MX or Epson FX printer driver on the host to see if the data transfers to the remote PC. Download the file 20UP_E.EXE from the Symantec BBS, CompuServe, or America Online. Windows 3.x Troubleshooting This section has printing troubleshooting tips for Windows 3.1 or 3.11. Try (alternately) turning Print Manager Off and On at the host and remote computers. Disable Fast Printing Direct to Port on both the host and remote PCs. Make sure the printer setup in the Windows Control Panel indicates a Local port. Verify the port settings with the following steps. Choose Main from the Window menu of either Program Manager or Norton Desktop. Double-click the Control Panel icon. Double-click Printers. Select Connect. The screen displays the status of each port, either Network or Local. For remote printing, the status should indicate Local. Windows 95 Troubleshooting This section has printing troubleshooting tips for Windows 95. pcANYWHERE for Windows 95 does not support printing from a DOS application. Symantec Technical Support strongly recommends that no Real Mode drivers be loaded in Windows 95. Rename your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS to remove DOS Real Mode drivers. Change the spool settings to RAw with the following steps. Select Settings from the Start menu. Select Printers Right-click the printer icon. Choose Properties. Select the Details tab. Click Spool Settings. Click the down arrow to show additional selections. Select RAW. Click OK. Remove your LPT1.DOS port with the following steps. Click Settings from the Start Menu. Select Printers. Delete any printer using the LPT1.DOS port. To do this, right-click the printer. Select Delete. Click the Details tab. Select the Delete Port button. Select the port LPT1.DOS. If you are unable to remove LPT1.DOS, you may need to contact Microsoft Technical Support for additional help. Setting the Printer Retry Timeout The printer retry timeout value is the number of seconds the printer waits after data goes to it. After the time set has elapsed, pcANYWHERE releases the data. The default value is 30 seconds. To change the timeout, increase or decrease the value in pcANYWHERE. Set the value to 0 (zero) to disable this feature. For pcANYWHERE 1.0 for Windows Add the following lines to the end of the PCAW.INI file to change the printer retry timeout value. (The PCAW.INI file is located in the Windows directory.) [Printer] PrinterTimeout=10 For pcANYWHERE 2.0 for Windows Add the following lines to the end of the AW.INI file to change the printer retry timeout value. (The AW.INI file is located in the WINAW directory.) [Printer] PrinterFlushTimeout=30 Using a Late Model HP Printer Driver without Success If you are having trouble printing to a late model HP printer, try the standard HP printer driver that comes with Windows 3.1.
