HOW TO USE OPEN_UP.EXE AUTOMATICALLY... *** NOTE: ***************************************************** If DR DOS is installed on your hard drive and your hard drive is COMPRESSED, see the section (FOR USERS WITH DR DOS INSTALLED ON A HARD DRIVE) in this document. *************************************************************** KWIKLOAD.BAT will extract all of the Update files you will need from OPEN_UP.EXE. It is a batch file designed to walk you through the Update process quickly and easily, but it can be used ONLY if your system configuration meets the following requirements: 1) You must have a hard drive with at least an additional 1.3MB of free disk space on the C: partition. This batch file will unpack all of the files needed to update your system to your C: drive. After they are unpacked, they will be copied to the DRDOS directory you specify using UPDATE.BAT. If your system does not have enough free disk space on the C: partition for two copies of all of these files, you must follow the instructions below which describe the procedure for using OPEN_UP.EXE MANUALLY. You might consider unpacking the Update files to a floppy disk instead (see instructions below.) 2) You must NOT already have a sub-directory on your C: drive called UPDATE. This batch file needs to store all of the files needed to update your system in a sub-directory off of your C: partition. If your system already has a sub-directory by this name UPDATE, you will need to follow the instructions below which describe the procedure for using OPEN_UP.EXE MANUALLY and specify a different directory name. If your system meets the above requirements, type KWIKLOAD and follow the instructions on screen to complete the Update process. If your system does not meet the requirements, read on. HOW TO USE OPEN_UP.EXE MANUALLY... Unpacking this file with the proper syntax will generate all the remaining files needed to update your DR DOS 6.0 operating system. It is a packed file just like the DR6UP2.EXE file which you have already discovered. OPEN_UP.EXE is a little different in that it contains files along with their stored path information. MANUAL UNPACKING OF OPEN_UP.EXE TO A HARD DRIVE... Type the following commands at the command line to proceed (type them exactly as shown): MD UPDATE OPEN_UP \UPDATE\ CD UPDATE UPDATE -- Suggested directory name. Can use another name instead of UPDATE in the lines above, if desired. MANUAL UNPACKING OF OPEN_UP.EXE TO A FLOPPY DRIVE... To create a floppy disk which can be used to update floppy based systems or multiple licenses of DR DOS, prepare a low density diskette using the FORMAT command and then type the following (type commands exactly as shown, that is, the case of the letters is CRUCIAL): OPEN_UP d: d: -- Stands for the drive on which DR DOS is installed. Example: OPEN_UP B: (for a floppy in the B: drive) HOW TO USE THE FILES EXTRACTED FROM OPEN_UP.EXE... ** BEFORE PROCEEDING, read the important notes in README first ** UPDATE.BAT, found now in the UPDATE directory or on the new floppy diskette, is the batch file you will use to update your DR DOS 6.0 operating system. To update DR DOS, you will need to specify on which drive DR DOS is already installed. If this batch file does not find DR DOS 6.0 already on the machine you are using in the drive you specify, it will not install the update. -- FOR USERS WITH DR DOS INSTALLED ON A HARD DRIVE... - If your hard drive is COMPRESSED, check the "D:" drive when - updating the SYSTEM files. To update a DR DOS installation on a hard drive, you must specify which bootable partition of your hard drive contains DR DOS and the name of the sub-directory containing the DR DOS files. The partition will normally be the "C:" partition and the sub-directory, normally the "DRDOS" directory. Now, you will need to log onto the drive and sub-directory containing the UPDATE.BAT file and the remaining files which were extracted from the OPEN_UP file, and type: UPDATE d: path d: -- Stands for the drive on which DR DOS is installed. path -- Stands for the path which contains the DR DOS files. Example: UPDATE C: DRDOS -- FOR USERS WITH DR DOS INSTALLED ON A SET OF FLOPPIES... You can update a DR DOS installation on a set of floppies in much the same way as you can on a hard drive. The difference is that the UPDATE.BAT file needs only to know which floppy drive contains the first DR DOS operating system diskette to be updated. So, you will need to log onto the drive and sub-directory containing the UPDATE.BAT file, and type: UPDATE d: d: -- Stands for the floppy drive containing the DR DOS 6.0 STARTUP Disk. Example: UPDATE B: NOTES ON FLOPPY INSTALLATION: -- The UPDATE.BAT file will prompt you for each of the other disks as they are needed. -- Novell does not recommend updating your original floppy disks. Use UPDATE on a backup set. -- Users with two floppy drives only on their machine should have the UPDATE.BAT file and the others unpacked from the OPEN_UP file in one drive, and run the batch file from that drive specifying the other as the drive containing the floppies to be updated. WHAT TO DO IF YOU RUN INTO TROUBLE... -- IF THE KWIKLOAD.BAT FILE "DOESN'T WORK"... -- Follow the "MANUAL" install instructions, and try the Update again. -- IF THE OPEN_UP.EXE FILE "DOESN'T WORK"... -- Check that you've entered the command correctly and that any options are used as specified above. -- Check the utility file's integrity by typing: OPEN_UP -t -- If the integrity of the utility file is bad, you may have to attempt downloading the DR6UP2.EXE file again. -- IF THE DR DOS UPDATE.BAT FILE "DOESN'T WORK"... -- Use the on-line help which is available from the UPDATE.BAT file by typing: UPDATE /H Thank you for using DR DOS 6.0!
