VULCAN.EXE (VERSION 1.0) Copyright (c) 1994 John Deurbrouck ------------------------------------------------------------------------- First Published in PC Magazine Feburary 8, 1994 (Utilities) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- VULCAN by JOHN DEURBROUCK PURPOSE: VULCAN is two Windows 3.1 utilities in one--a Trashcan and a Vault. In Trashcan mode, VULCAN provides a safe, reversible delete facility. In Vault mode, VULCAN lets you archive older versions of important documents as you work. SETUP: To install VULCAN, simply copy the file VULCAN.EXE to your hard disk. The directory you choose need not be in your DOS PATH or your Windows directory. When you first launch VULCAN, it will ask you to select an archive directory. To avoid this dialog box, you can either associate the .VCN extension with VULCAN.EXE or add the archive directory path to the command line for the VULCAN icon. REMARKS: You can launch as many copies of VULCAN as you want during a single Windows session. The only limitation is that each archive must have its own directory. For example, you may want to use one instance of VULCAN as a Vault and another instance as a Trashcan. VULCAN runs as an icon, and the icon changes depending on VULCAN's mode--Vault or Trashcan. Double-clicking on the icon's caption will toggle between modes. To move files into VULCAN, you can use the Add Files. . . option on the system menu or drag-and-drop to VULCAN's icon from the File Manager. With the Add Files. . . option, you can add only one file at a time. If you are running VULCAN in Trashcan mode, the original file will be deleted after you move it into the archive. In Vault mode, the original file is left untouched. When you double-click on the VULCAN icon, the Browse dialog box opens. This dialog box displays a catalog of the files contained in the archive and lets you restore or delete files from within the archive. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- JOHN DEURBROUCK, a programmer since 1976, lives in seattle, Washington. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
