NOTECARD.TXT File Version 1.0 (c) Robert M. Steuer, 1992. An HP48 *.DOC Viewer [Note: Reading .DOC files on the HP48 screen is odious at best, and attempted by a reasonable person only if no printout or computer screen is at hand. But this program runs on a PC. This leads to the question: what on earth is the point? Only two reasons for its existence come to mind. (1) You might need to take ONLY the HP48 somewhere (unencumbered with printouts of .DOC files) but still need instructions either to read or to give someone else, so you might as well have them inside your HP48. (2) You will have only the HP48 and a Drive95 (Sparcom battery-operated Kermit-speaking stand-alone disk drive; works well with the Goodies Disks) and can replace the .DOC files on your disk(s) with their NOTECARD-converted equivalents for later retrieval and perusal. Otherwise, don't use this program; either view DOCs on your PC screen or print 'em out. -jkh-] OVERVIEW -------- NoteCard is a program written for the MS-DOS IBM and Compatible Computers. The purpose of this program is to read in a standard ASCII textfile and convert it into a HP 48 notecard format((c) 1992; Robert M. Steuer). Once the file is converted, one may simply transfer the converted file into the HP 48(use TEXT mode, not BINARY) and access the textfile as a program. This makes easy work out of trying to remember instructions for different programs one has for the HP 48. INSTRUCTIONS ------------ 1. At the Dos Prompt, type NOTECARD and press enter. Simply type in the filename to be converted and when done, the program will write the new file to the same name with the extension .CRD, for card(notecard). Example: NOTECARD.TXT or NOTECARD will become NOTECARD.CRD 2. Using Kermit, transfer the converted file from your computer to the HP 48. To do this access the I/O menu on the HP 48 by pressing LEFT- SHIFT,(the orange button) and the PRG button. Next, press the SETUP softkey. Make sure your HP 48 is setup for wire transfer and setup for ASCII type files. Finally, make sure the baud rate, parity, and checksum are set correctly so as to match the setting on your computer. Do not worry about the translate code, the converted file will take care of that for you when you upload the file. Again press LEFT-SHIFT and the PRG button to access the I/O menu. Press RECV. Now start sending the file to the HP 48 from your computer using Kermit. Once the file is sent, press the VAR button and you will see the file on the HP 48's menu. Simply press the softkey underneath the program name and that is it! To advance to the next "notecard" simply press the NXT button and continue to do so until you are done looking at the series of "notecards". MISCELLANEOUS ------------- * ANY DOUBLE QUOTES(ie. ") WILL BE REPLACED WITH A SINGLE QUOTE(ie. `). This is to retain file integrity purposes only. * Wildcards will NOT be accepted as an input filename. * Blank lines are eliminated and replaced with a space character to reduce the size of the notecard and retain file integrity. * To abort the program, enter a * as the input file name. CLOSING ------- This program took quite a bit of time to write and kept me up a few nights wondering how to accomplish different procedures to make this program work. [Ah, the sure sign of a real programmer! -jkh-] I am not asking for donations but if you find the program helpful, I would GREATLY appreciate a dollar or so to help me finance college and all. If you can't afford that, a postcard would be appreciated telling me how you like the program and what I can do to improve later versions. Send Correspondence to: Robert M.
