=========================================================================== VP-EMPTY by Peter Donnelly [CIS 76217,2177] May be reproduced free forever =========================================================================== This little Windows program is intended to overcome an idiosyncrasy of Ventura Publisher that can be bothersome and even dangerous. When VP is run, normally it loads the last stylesheet used. This feature, intended as a convenience, can lead to a couple of problems, namely: 1. If the stylesheet has been deleted or moved, Ventura constructs a new one using ENVIRON.WID, and goes through the tedious process of constructing the new width table. 2. More important, if the user creates a new chapter and forgets to rename the stylesheet before saving, other chapters may become corrupted. VP-EMPTY enables the user or system administrator to define a default stylesheet that will be loaded whenever VP-WIN is run, regardless of what stylesheet was last in use. The program does this by modifying the VPWIN.INF file. It then goes on to launch Ventura Publisher. To set up the program, perform the following steps: 1. Create a simple default stylesheet called EMPTY.STY or some such thing. Make it read-only to ensure that it doesn't get changed without first being "saved as". 2. Copy VP-EMPTY.EXE to your Ventura directory. 3. In Windows, add VP-EMPTY.EXE to the appropriate group in Program Manager. When defining its properties, enter as the command line something like this: C:\VENTURA\VP-EMPTY C:\TYPESET\EMPTY.STY /I=C:\BOB The first argument is the pathname of the default stylesheet; this is mandatory. The second is an optional argument giving the location of VPWIN.INF; this is the same argument you would normally pass to Ventura (see the version 4 manual, page A-2). If you omit the second argument, VP-EMPTY and Ventura will both look for VPWIN.INF in the VENTURA directory. If unable to find VPWIN.INF, the program will fail, and you will have to load Ventura in the normal way. Note that you can set up different "copies" of VP-EMPTY for different users, just as you can with Ventura itself. The program will pass on the /I argument when it launches Ventura. =========================================================================== (Advertisement) VP ROUNDUP FOR WINDOWS! ----------------------- Users of VP-WIN will be sure to benefit from this inexpensive but powerful stylesheet- and chapter-management utility, which lets you: - Catalog chapters and stylesheets in selected directories with just a keystroke or mouse click. - See the contents of chapters at a glance, including the first 100 lines of text files (except DCA format.) - Add permanent annotations to chapters. - Copy chapters - and leave the width table behind!
