*********** PocketD Plus v4.6 - New features since v1.67 ************ PocketD has now been around since 1992 (v1.34-v4.1). I listen hard to requests, and have successively produced new versions to incorporate most of the features that users wanted, and much more. This new version updates v4.4 to add 15 new options and improve others. >>>>> The key improvements between v1.67-v3.0 1. Greatly improved ease-of-use, through the new program MenuD 2. Full screen directory and archive browsing 3. SFX scanning 4. Improved support of other products (4DOS, Novell, LANtastic, OS/2) 5. Improved and completely re-worked documentation 6. Security. PocketD v3.X protects itself against Virus Attack 7. Full scrolling execution templates 8. Dedicated colour configuration through SETCOL >>>>> NEW WITH VERSION 3.1 Oct93 Support added for COMPACK v4.5 compression (shareware version is now also compressed using it). Copy option "b" now less zealous. Under some circumstances re-named filenames were reported as "empty" names. Extra protection within MenuD to prevent inappropriate options from being mixed (for delete, view and copy). Copy now reports "skipped" in response to user skip. Corrections to errors in documentation for v3.0. Template $B "backspace" now accepts "n". e.g. $5B "5" backspaces. Additional options for registration in Canada. >>>>> NEW WITH VERSION 4.0 Mar94 4DOS, OS/2 and string-search bug fixes. A serious flaw was introduced with v3.1 which caused problems with OS/2 and 4DOS. Searching for strings in files also had a problem. Browsing is now extended to allow viewing of contents of files within archives. These feature is transparent, so unless you pay close attention you might not even notice whether a file being viewed is from inside or outside of an archive! The feature makes the ARCVIEW.BAT script provided with v3.1 redundant. This extended feature requires the use of PKUNZIP, ZOO, LHA, ARJ etc. (not needed for browsing names inside archives). Browse options also include UNCOMPRESS any archived file or whole archive and COPY any file. This can also be modified by the new option /.z which allows the user to treat all files as potential ZIP archives. Browsing now also has a true "user-defined" option that allows a command to be added to the browser. Previously the user only had the option to simply replace D.EXE's internal viewer by Vernon Buerg's list program (or other viewer). This facility is now largely redundant as D.EXE's new viewer is very capable. The option to use LIST is still there, but is overridden by the user command set up by the variable D_LIS. The user can now use all the previous commands with their own custom option for an editor, archiver or whatever command required. /Z has been extended to allow D.EXE to treat any file as a specific archive type. e.g. some sources may distribute ARJ or ZIP files as FILECHKD.001, FILECHKD.002 etc. Template is enhanced by $x,y option to set screen coordinates, $K files copied, $%X variable formating. Copying under networks has been greatly improved to allow timeouts on files that cannot be opened. Also improved error trapping avoids the few instances when D.EXE could fail when trying to read a file while another user attempts to modify or delete it. Files that have been deleted during a cyclic copy are now abandoned rather than waited for. These enhancements significantly improve D.EXE usefulness as a network backup tool. D.EXE now has its own critical error and break handlers so that the user has more than one method for breaking out of the program. It is also less vulnerable to network errors (above). D.EXE will return errorlevel 0 when a critical error causes a copy to be abandonned. File viewing now supports unix-type text files. >>>>> NEW WITH VERSION 4.1 Jun94 The main reason for v4.1! -----> Added support for CRUSH - the new Super-compressor for DOS (release date early June, with WINCRUSH to follow soon). This archiving tool outperforms any other compression tool available. CRUSH typically achieves 2:1 improvement over PKZIP with document/source files, 3:1 over Stacker 4.0 and 8:1 over uncompressed files! CRUSH works with PKZIP, ARJ, LHA, ARJ, ZOO and HA. Browsing now allows browsing of files inside archives inside other archives, to any depth (limited by memory). Reduced memory usage during browsing allows deeper directory and archive browsing. /Z[?] now also allows matching of files without extensions. All Browsing selections will now still be valid, even if the user externally changes the current selected drive/dir. Bug fix with Shareware MENUD which fails to find D.EXE if the user has an environment greater than 400 bytes. Bug fix with archive scanning. v4.0 could fail if archives either contained very long paths or the last file in the (LHA) archive was very small. >>>>> NEW WITH VERSION 4.2 Nov94 Support for ODI drivers under Novell 3.X/4.X added. The previous version of PocketD was incompatible as the drivers modified the specification of the findfirst DOS call. Bug fix of string display during searching. Strings found on adjacient lines in a file found by /"" were incorrectly displayed. /cm changed to exclude moving of subdirs, unless "p" (path) also used. This is a minor philosophical change. /ch new "c(h)ange name" copy option will move files/subdir to specified name. e.g. D sub1 /ch sub2 will rename dir. >>>>> NEW WITH VERSION 4.3 Jan95 (not released as shareware) /.C new option allows the user to specify the cluster size used when estimating disk space used. The user can directly calculate the effect of partitioning a disk to use more efficient cluster sizes without having to actually do it. /Q New "jump to or mark tag" command while viewing to allow the user to easily switch between 2 points in a file. >>>>> NEW WITH VERSION 4.4 Feb95 New WINSTALL.EXE program to install PocketD Plus in Windows. MenuD also modified to improve Windows startup. Support for 4DOS BTM files (recognised as executable) /.Q new option to simplify /Q display to remove command options to leave 1 line per file while browsing (use with /Q + /S/W). /.N new option to always force errorlevel to be number of files. /.B new option to force minimum buffer (memory) usage, allowing D.EXE to be run within the smallest memory. This makes it easier for D.EXE to run other programs which need memory. /gg new variant of /g graph plot uses a double-resolation plot character, allowing finer detail in size assessment. /rr no longer gives a spurious path for *.*. "Out of memory" condition now always waits for user input Support for DOS SHARE. PocketD now ensures that it will not leave files open that may be accessed by a template to be run. >>>>> NEW WITH VERSION 4.5 Mar95 (There will not be shareware release of this version, see below) /f extended to give day of week and seconds for each file. /_ allow named subdirectories to be excluded from searches. $y new template option to give day of week of file. $Y as above, for today. $+x outputs character "x" + file number. /., new tailoring option will insert commas in file sizes. /.0 new tailoring option will suppress leading zeros in dates. /.A new tailoring option will show absolute paths rather than the default relative paths. File sizes in the normal display will convert from bytes to Kbytes if the size >9,999,999. The "actual space used" summary is now given in Kb and "free space" in Kb or meg. /h.x new sub-options /h.3 removes column headers, /h.4 removes column header and tail summary. Searches by D can be terminated early by holding down ALT+RSHIFT. this allows the user to examine matches found so far. /Q adds the option to use the END key to exit /Q giving a final summary instead of simply breaking out using ESC. Text searching while viewing files can now use DOSKEY/CED/ANARKEY buffered strings to submit to searches. Text searching now has both case-sensitive and case-insensitive search keys "/" and "F" (as LIST) /Q now allows viewing of files in archives that have been saved with paths. Searching... message now appears on the display, even if output is re-directed. /@ now turns of colour processing (as it should do!) >>>>> NEW WITH VERSION 4.6 Jul95 /ct new copy option will copy new files and overwrite files that have changed (including overwriting new files). /ct can be used with other copy options, e.g. /ctx will only overwrite existing files that have changed. ************** Registered PocketD users!! ************** A v4.6 disk upgrade is free for all users who register CRUSH. Just add "(REG)" to your name when registering. e.g. Jack Smith (REG). CRUSH is now at version 1.8.
