New AP.INI variable settings There are two new INI variables that can be set. The AP.INI file is used to set up the ANSI Publisher program. For more information about setting up ANSI Publisher, please refer to the Configuring ANSI Publisher section in Chapter 2 of the manual. CompressSpaces Setting The CompressSpaces variable can be set to YES or NO. When set to YES, ANSI Publisher will eliminate extra spaces by using the following ANSI ESCape sequence: ^[[K^[[#C. The "#" is the number of spaces the cursor will be move to the right. Compression will be used when creating ANSI, PC Board, and WildCat! files. By using this setting, the ANSI files generated will be very tightly packed. This means the files will be shown to your BBS caller faster. For example, the following box ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿ ³ ³ ³ ³ ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ would turn into ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿ ³ ^[[K^[[50C³ ³ ^[[K^[[50C³ ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ As you can see, over 75 extra spaces were eliminated. NOTE: Some BBS software packages, such as TBBS, automatically strip ANSI ESCape sequences if the caller can't see them. So if you set the CompressSpaces to YES and show the ANSI file to the caller, the screen will become garbled. The fix this, make sure you send the ANSI file to the ANSI user and an ASCII version to the non-ANSI user. ALSO NOTE: Either setting will work with files on your BBS. The only difference will be the speed increase if the variable is set to YES. AllANSICompressionOff Setting The AllANSICompressionOff variable can be set to YES or NO. This setting should always be set to NO. If it is set to YES, ANSI Publisher will make "sloppy ANSI". That is, no ANSI compression. This setting is used for debugging only. If you are curious, try the YES setting and generate an ANSI file. Take a look at this file with a text editor. Then set the setting to NO and generate the same ANSI file and compare. You will soon discover the ANSI Publisher compression is very efficient. NOTE: Make sure the AllANSICompressionOff variable is always set to NO when generating ANSI files for your BBS. This will insure the files are as tightly packed as possible. ANSI Publisher Conversion Program Update The ANSI Publisher Conversion program has been updated. The new version now converts ASCII text files along with PCBoard and WildCat! files. By converting the ASCII files, you don't have to use the import ASCII file feature within ANSI Publisher. When converting PCBoard and WildCat! files, the @color codes will be converted to their proper colors in the final APF file. The program also supports wildcard parameters. For example, type the following at the DOS prompt to convert all the .ANS files: CONVERT *.ANS The same limitations still apply. Please refer to chapter 6 for additional information about the ANSI Publisher Conversion program. Technical Support If you experience any problems running the program, or have any questions regarding ANSI Publisher, our technical support staff will be able to help.
