The Blue Wave Offline Mail Reader/DOS, v2.30 Installation and Upgrade Documentation Copyright (C) 1992-1996 by Cutting Edge Computing All Rights Reserved. ========== WELCOME! ========== Welcome to The Blue Wave Offline Mail Reader/DOS, v2.30. This short documentation file contains instructions on installing The Blue Wave Offline Mail Reader for the first time, and for upgrading from a previous version of the mail reader (v2.00, v2.01, v2.02, v2.05, v2.06, v2.10, v2.11, v2.12, v2.20, or v2.21). Please read these instructions carefully. Following these simple procedures will help to insure that you install the mail reader successfully the FIRST time! ** A special note for our friends who use speech synthesis hardware and software for screen reading; when loading INSTDOS.EXE and BWAVE.EXE, add a "/s" command line parameter, such as: INSTDOS /s This will put the installation program into a mode that is more compatible with your speech software. ===================== UPGRADE INSTALLATIONS ===================== 1) If you have never installed The Blue Wave Offline Mail Reader, or you would like to install this version of the mail reader to a new directory (rather than upgrading/converting an older version), please skip to the next section of the documentation; NEW INSTALLATIONS. 2) The installation program, INSTDOS.EXE, can only upgrade an existing version of the DOS mail reader. It cannot convert Blue Wave/OS2 or Blue Wave/386 to Blue Wave/DOS v2.30. 3) *Before* loading the installation program, make a backup copy of your existing mail reader setup. 4) If you have renamed the file BWAVE.EXE, you must change it back to BWAVE.EXE. The upgrade will not work properly unless you do. 5) If you are a registered user upgrading from v2.0x or v2.1x of The Blue Wave Offline Mail Reader, and you no longer have a copy of the registration letter you received from us, load the OLD mail reader, go to the "Setup Parameters" menu, and move to the "Registration" pull-down menu. Copy your registration name(s) and registration number(s) down and keep them in a safe place. The new mail reader cannot use the old registration numbers, and will NOT work in registered mode until you get your registration number(s) upgraded. You will NEED these numbers in order to get an upgraded registration number. And, you might decide to reinstall v2.12 at a later time (not likely, just possible!). To find out how you can get your registration numbers upgraded, please press at the 'wait' screen when loading the mail reader, and/or read the file REGISTER.BW, which will be unpacked to your main reader directory. 6) Copy the files BWAVEDOS.INS and INSTDOS.EXE to a temporary directory. These files are contained in the main BW23_DOS.ZIP archive. 7) Type "INSTDOS" at the DOS command line, without the quotes. 8) Select "Upgrade Installation" from the screen which asks if you are installing new or upgrading. 9) Enter the directory name where your current mail reader is installed. 10) The installation program will take over from there. All of your files from old versions of the mail reader will be converted, and new program files will be unpacked. All files that were modified and are no longer used with version 2.30 of the mail reader will be moved to a directory called OLDDOS off of your main reader directory. (If your main reader directory is C:\BWAVE, C:\BWAVE\OLDDOS will contain your old configuration, documentation, and program files). After you are comfortable running v2.30, and you are certain that you will no longer need the old files, you can delete them to save drive space. ** If you are upgrading from version 2.12 or earlier, the old BWCOLOR.200 file will not be converted. Sorry, but you will have to reconfigure your color scheme, as it was not possible to convert this file automatically for you. 11) Delete the files BWAVEDOS.INS and INSTDOS.EXE, as you will not need them to run the mail reader. However, you may want to save a copy of BW23_DOS.ZIP in case you need or want to reinstall the mail reader at a later date. INSTDOS.EXE can be used at a later time to 'selectively' install portions of the mail reader program. For a description of what files are contained in the installation file, skip to the last section of this documentation file. 12) Enjoy the new features and capabilities of the new mail reader! ================= NEW INSTALLATIONS ================= 1) Copy BWAVEDOS.INS and INSTDOS.EXE to a temporary directory. 2) Type "INSTDOS" at the DOS command prompt, without the quotes. 3) When the installation program loads, it will ask you if this is an upgrade installation or a new installation. Choose the "New Installation" option. 4) The installation program will then ask you for the name of the directory where you would like the mail reader installed. Type a directory name and press . If this directory does not exist, the installation program will automatically create it for you. 5) After a directory name has been entered, you will be presented with a screen which allows you to select the components of the mail reader you would like to install. ALL of these items should be set to "Yes", since you have never installed the mail reader before. 6) After the installation program has unpacked all of the necessary files, you will be told to change to the mail reader's installation directory and type "BWAVE" (again, without the quotes). At this point the installation program has done its job, and the next step is to load the actual mail reader. 7) You may delete BWAVEDOS.INS and INSTDOS.EXE after the installation has been completed. They are not used by the mail reader, and are only temporary installation files. However, you should save a copy of BW23_DOS.ZIP in case you want or need to reinstall the mail reader in the future. 8) You may want to scan the next section of this file, as it explains what each of the files unpacked by the installation program is used for. ======================================== SELECTIVE INSTALLATIONS AND FILE LISTING ======================================== The enclosed installation program (INSTDOS.EXE) can be used to selectively install items from the mail reader's distribution archive. To selectively unpack only certain files, load INSTDOS, select "New Installation or Partial Installation", and a directory name where you would like the files unpacked.
