INSTALLING COELI - ELECTRIC PLANISPHERE --------------------------------------- Your Coeli package is contained in a self-extracting file. This file is called COELINST.EXE Coeli cannot be run straight from HD floppy or CD ROM. To install Coeli, just follow these simple steps: 1) first create a new directory (folder) on your hard drive from DOS or Windows. We suggest you call the directory COELI-3, but of course anything will suffice. To accomplish this from the DOS command line you would type the following: MD COELI-3 In Windows, you would double-click the File Manager icon and then select Create Directory from the File menu. In Windows 95 Explorer, simply click the menu-items File, New, and then Folder. A new folder object with blank name tag will then appear in Explorer's window, to which you should supply the name suggested above. 2) Copy all the files from your distribution media into the new folder or directory. 3) Switch to the new directory and unpack the main archive according to your supplier's instructions (it will probably have a .ZIP or .LZH extension). For Windows users, WinZip is recommended for this task. From the DOS prompt, you might proceed as follows (assuming your distribution medium is a floppy disk currently in drive A, the supplier's archive is called COELI.ZIP, and your hard disk is labelled drive C): COPY A:\*.* C:\COELI-3 ( copy from floppy ) CD C:\COELI-3 ( switch to new dir) PKUNZIP COELI.ZIP ( unpack archive ) 4) As mentioned, your Coeli package is contained in a self-extracting executable (program) file called COELINST.EXE. Simply run this like a normal program from your new directory. All the Coeli files will be reconstituted, and you will then be able to delete COELINST.EXE from your hard disk, as it will have served its purpose. NOTE: the foregoing steps will not be necessary if you obtained your package on a diskette with COELINST.EXE in the root directory unarchived. If such is the case, you may also have received a program called INSTALL.BAT which should completely automate the installation process explained here. 5) If you have not already done so, install your VESA driver by typing its name. If it loads without error, you'll be home and dry and all you will need to do is start COELI from the DOS prompt or from inside your favourite shell. Coeli runs under Windows too, but more slowly. Please note that you should always install a VESA driver prior to using Coeli. A universal VESA driver may have been provided on the same disk volume on which you acquired Coeli. Otherwise please see the end of the manual for suggestions on how to obtain one. Coeli 3 will not function without a VESA driver! WINDOWS 95 USERS: Coeli has now been exhaustively tested within Microsoft's newest operating system on a Pentium with a 2 Mb Diamond Stealth graphics card (S3 chipset) and UniVBE version 5.3 installed. There haven't been any problems whatsoever - neither have customers using Coeli from Windows 95 reported any. We recommend the excellent WinZip utility for unpacking Coeli's main .zip archive. You can get it from http://www.winzip.com Tip: when in doubt about the Win95 Explorer's file-listing, just press [F5] to refresh its display. Very often, an item you thought wasn't there will magically appear! After running the self-extractor COELINST by double-clicking on it, simply drag the new-born COELI.EXE object from Explorer's main window onto the desktop, and a shortcut should create itself there with Coeli's own icon. If the correct icon doesn't appear, right-click on the new desktop icon, select Properties, Change Icon, then Browse, choosing the object called Coeli.ico from your Coeli-3 folder. While you're about it, go to the Memory tab and ensure 'Auto' is visible in all the selection boxes. Check out the Screen tab at the same time: Coeli should run as a full screen application. Under Program - Advanced, the following boxes should have ticks in them: 'Prevent MS DOS-based programs from detecting Windows' and 'Suggest MS-DOS mode as necessary' 'Close on exit' should always be enabled. When you run Coeli for the first time, please make sure you maximise all DOS windows that appear (use the expansion icon in the window's toolbar to get into full-screen console mode, with no window borders). If problems occur the first time round under Win 95, take note of the resulting error messages, and then start fiddling around with the Properties settings until you begin to get positive results. The most likely cause of faults will be failure to install a working VESA driver... We recommend that you glance at the manual before proceeding further, either the Windows Write version (COELI.WRI), but preferably the Ascii version (COELI.TXT). For example, to access COELI.TXT from Windows, just double-click on it under File Manager and it will be displayed in Notepad. In Windows 95, simply drag and drop it onto the desktop Notepad icon. To read the same file under DOS, enter the following at the DOS prompt: TYPE COELI.TXT |MORE The complete Coeli package contains a number of text files, all designed to help you get started with the minimum of fuss. Have a browse through any item with the .TXT or .DOC extension if you've the time. There is even a HELP-ME!.DOC for VESA problems. Note that in this case, the DOC suffix does not denote a Microsoft Word(TM) document, but is there simply to distinguish files external to the 'inner' archive. All such documents are pure PC ASCII (text). Please make a backup copy of your distribution disk so that, if anything goes wrong, you can simply repeat the above process and try again. If you have serious installation problems, do not hesitate to get in touch.
