This file contains corrections or additions to the Brother's Keeper 5.2 documentation including changes through 12-March-1994. Corrections: On page 6 of the printed manual, date type 10 uses . and 11 uses - New items: Laser Labels: If you want to print labels on an HP Laserjet printer and if you are using Avery Laser Labels, then use custom reports (pick N from the main menu, then pick 2) and pick field number 97 for the only field to print. In the "length of field" area, type the 4 digit number that describes the form that you are using. The label routine should work correctly for forms numbered 5260, 5261, and 5262. Note that the first two digits may be different depending on how many sheets are in the package you bought. So if your package says 8160 then type 5260. The last two digits indicate to the program the size of each label. This routine changes the top margin on the printer, so you may want to reset the printer when you are finished printing the labels. The following information in not in the documentation: In the Register, Indented, and big Ahnentafel reports can save new defaults for the options given. You can also use the up arrow to change answers you have previously given. The questions on the first screen of defaults are the same for all three reports. However, you may save different defaults for each report. The top box in the second screen is the same for all three reports, and the second box on the second screen is unique for each of the three reports. To save your new defaults, press F5 after entering your answers. If you press F5 on the second screen it will also save the defaults for the first screen. You may press F5 after entering all the answers (the last place you may press F5 is when it is asking for the heading.) If you save your new defaults, then then each time you run that report, it will load your options. You only need to save your defaults again if you decide to change them. When you are Adding or Modifying a name, you can press F2 to pop up a birth date calculator. If you know the death date for a person, and the age of the person, it will calculate the birth date. (Some tombstones list the death date and age in years, months and days.) After you press F2 enter the death date using the normal MMDDYYYY numbers. It will convert to your desired format. Then enter the age in years, months, and days. After you enter the days, it will compute the birth date. Then press enter to clear the screen or press up arrow to change the numbers. In the Utility program Quality check, when it asks if you want to put children in birth order, you can answer * and that will stop the program from asking you if you want to change order of children for other families. In other words, it will not change the order of children for any families and it will not ask if you want to. There is a new ancestor report available. Pick "3" from the main menu and on the ancestor menu pick "C" for the collapsed ancestor chart. It can print from 2 to 52 generations of ancestors on one chart. It does not waste space for unknown ancestors. Currently it shows the birth, death and marriage dates only. It prints in "compressed" size letters. It can print up to 1250 ancestors on the chart. If you know ALL of your ancestors for 10 generations, that would be 1024 people. Most people have not traced all family lines back that far, so you should be able to print 20 generations or more without reaching the 1250 people limit. If you have only traced a few family lines, then you can go back 52 generations. If you want to see a description of the changes from version 5.0 to version 5.1 then print the file called CHANGE51.DOC. If you want to see a description of the changes from version 5.1 to version 5.2 then print the file CHANGE52.DOC. To print that file, copy the file to PRN For example: COPY CHANGE52.DOC PRN The information in CHANGE52.DOC is also included in the new BK 5.2 manual, but you may want to print the file instead of browsing the whole manual.
