Thank you for your interest in Source View V3.3e. This file is the latest addendum for the current release. 1. What's new in Source View V3.3e? 1a. Tabular text block operation is the latest feature offered in V3.3. You can now mark, copy, move, save search and replace any desire number of rows and columns of text. 1b. The Mark to End of Lines [Ctrl K E] function designed specifically for tabular text block makes it easy to capture text, like program comment, that start at a fixed column but have variable length. 1c. Variable tab size of 2, 4 and 8 is now supported. 1d. The Status Line Text setup option is added to allow helpful hints to be displayed in the edit screen. 1e. A new command buffer is added for the main menu function File-Command to allow recalling of the last command. 1f. A TCC/BCC Patch is added to Setup to work around the problems with the two Borland C/C++ compiler when using Run-time File Access Interface. 1g. In cascade mode, file windows are nolonger rearranged after a file is closed. 2. Even though a lot of the features in Source View are designed for programmers, you can also use it as an advance text editor. Another good way of using the editing power of Source View is software integration. Many programs allow users to designate an editor replacement. For example: 2a. The 1Word editor in XTGOLD can edit only one file no larger than 64K. You can designate Source View as a replacement in the configuration (Alt-F10) under item "Editor program:". 2b. The PCEdit in ProComm Plus also has the same limitation and can be replaced by Source View in SETUP UTILITY (Alt-S) under item FILE/PATH Options. The QLEdit in QuickLink II/Fax can be replaced in a similar manner. 2c. The default editor in FoxPro can be replaced by adding the following line to CONFIG.FP: TEDIT = /0 SV.COM 3. You might know the SysEdit program in Windows 3.1 which automatically opens the four system files for DOS and Windows. Here is a tip on how you can do it in DOS with Source View: 3a. Create a one-line batch file SYSED.BAT as follows: @SV C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT C:\CONFIG.SYS 3b. Place both SYSED.BAT and SV.COM in one of your directories included in your PATH. 3c. At any DOS prompt, type SYSED . 4. All Source View opened files must fit in conventional memory. Therefore, the total size of all open files can not exceed 640K. The maximum number of open files is only subject to memory availability. Source View works fine in the DOS Window of Windows 3.x. Further, the Paste function in the system menu (Edit) of the DOS Window also works well, provided that the Indent Mode must be turned off to allow correct pasting. Using this function, the Source View Editor can receive any text contents from the Windows clipboard. Certain video cards' Windows 3.x drivers were improperly written such that they cause Windows to report error message "Application cannot access video memory..." when running Source View in a DOS Window. For example, most video cards using Cirrus Logic chipsets, including most Dell computers with integrated local bus video cards, exhibit such problem. A workaround to this problem is as follows: in the coresponding PIF file (DOSPRMPT.PIF, _DEFAULT.PIF or SV.PIF), select the "Low Graphics" radio button in the Video Memory section; check the "Retain Video Memory" checkbox in the Display Options section (in the Advanced dialog). 5. A number of bugs in V3.2x, V3.3x were fixed: 5a. Undo fails when typing over old text in Overwrite Mode and exceeding the end of original line. 5b. Help on "Editor Setup Menu" scrolls up when the last text is longer than the width of the window. 5c. Incorrectly displays the default key assignment for Mark Position (1-4) function in Help and Setup. 5d. Source View now assumes DOS new-line format if the file has only one line and without CRLF or NL, where before it assumes Unix new-line format. 5e. Duplicate file can be opened for edit (not Read-only) after undo a Rename Current File [Ctrl O N] action. 5f. Dual window display format in Display Resolution 2 and 3 (40 and 50 lines) doesnot fill up the screen. 5g. Find forward within block never reaches "String not found." condition when there is a target string right at the end of the block. Replace forward tries to replace the target string twice when there is a target string right at the end of the block. 5h. Similar to 5g, Replace a String when the target is right at the end of the block causes the end of block mark to be misplaced after the replacement and undo. 5i. Find/Replace backward within block fails to locate a target string when it is right at the beginning of the block. 5j. In a read-only files several editing functions can be performed (e.g. [Delete] at end of line, shift block and insert text during dynamic blocking). 5k. Save files using [Ctrl O S] Save All Files causes Run-time File Access Interface to fail (the compile gets wrong text). 5l. All auto-indent functions (e.g. Backspace, New Line) always assumes tab size 8 regardless of Setup. 5m. Opening a read-only file with a 8.3 filename crashes. 5n. Display doesnot refresh after a setup file with different tab size is loaded. 5o. Paste a tabular block into the middle of the line crashes. 5p. Executing a program with a parameters longer than 128 characters crashes. 5q. Cannot assgin F4 to the second line in Keymap Setup. For example, assign F4 to Find/Replace Again. 5r. Hit ESC and F1 simultaneously and repeately crashes. 5s. Mark the end of the tabular block at the last line of the file causes New Line [Enter] to malfunction. 5t. Crashes when copy tabular block to clipboard the second time. 5u. Cannot paste the entire tabular block from clipboard after using Append to Clipboard [Ctrl K N]. 6. Since the first shareware version (V3.0i) of Source View published in 1993, the response I received has been minimum. It is obvious to me that the golden age of DOS text mode software has come and gone. I have decided that V3.x is the last version of Source View for DOS. A 16-bit version of Source View for Windows is currently under development. It is written in C++, and I plan to offer it in two parts: one is the Source View Editor Core which includes all editing functions in DLL or OBJ/LIB form, along with complete documentations; the second part is the front end GUI based on the Microsoft Foundation Class, complete with all source code and resources. A 32-bit version will also be developed when Windows 95 is available. I have selected the SimTel Software Repository as the primary release site for current and future versions of Source View. Other shareware publishing channels that I use include PC-SIG Library and JCS Marketing (now owned by OWOBOPTE Industries, Inc.).
