Unless otherwise specified, all instances of Edit, Word, and Works refer to First ADE SoftWear products. I decided to write my own word processor/text editor in late 1993. A computational program I use daily produces files averaging 50,000 to 200,000 bytes (i.e., characters) in size. These files can exceed 500,000 bytes and, on occasion, grow to 2 or 3 megabytes (2,000,000 to 3,000,000 characters). Creating and proofing a document so large requires creating and proofing numerous subunits and then using the "COPY file1 + file2 + file3 + file4 enddoc.txt" technique to produce the end product. This is cumbersome, time consuming, and error prone. Making matters worse, high-end word processors capable of handling these large files have the bad habit of corrupting the formatting. Microsoft's Edit, which is otherwise perfect, dies after approximately 128,000 bytes, and Edlin, which handles large files surprisingly well by swapping pages into and out of memory, just isn't friendly enough. So, necessity being the mother of invention, First ADE Edit (c) was born. Version 1.0 , a 64kB editor, is more complete than Microsoft's Edit included in MSDOS version 5/6.xx. First ADE Edit version 1.0 can't read 3 megabyte files (yet) but it can open multiple files at once (approximately seven 50,000 byte files at a time) and write out to 256 columns. If requested, First ADE Edit can be produced to write out to 1024 or more columns. CAPABILITIES SUMMARY ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ See the table below for a comprehensive list of First ADE Edit's abilities verses the competition. Options First ADE Edit ³ MS Edit ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÅÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Read files larger than 1 megabyte No ³ No ³ Work with numerous files at once Yes ³ No ³ Ability to Zoom, Size, Tile, and Cascade windows Yes ³ No ³ Max number of columns 256 ³ 256 ³ Print Yes - limited ³ Yes ³ Ability to shell to DOS Yes ³ No ³ Undo command to remove mistakes Yes ³ No ³ Editable Clipboard - make changes to items ³ before pasting into your document Yes ³ No ³ Search ability, once or multiple times Yes ³ Yes ³ Search and Replace Yes ³ Yes ³ Tools such as: (courtesy Borland, Inc.) ³ ASCII Table Yes ³ No Four Function Calculator Yes ³ No Monthly Calendar (1776 'til 3000, at least) Yes ³ No Sliding Block Puzzle (just for fun) Yes ³ No Clock Yes ³ No ³ Working Hot Keys on status line Yes ³ No ³ Multi-lingual editions (all in one program) Yes ³ No (Deutsch, English, Francais) ³ ³ Works on ANY computer with ANY version of DOS Yes ³ No Several major and a few minor improvements are planned to Edit. Toggle-able word wrap and F1 Help are planned for the near term. Edit will remain an ASCII-only text editor. The next task at hand is Word. Word will be a superset of Edit, with text formatting capabilities, e.g., left/center/right justification, headers and footers, underline, bold, single and double spaced text, etc. If Edit and Word prove successful Works will follow. Works will contain a word processor, database, spreadsheet, and maybe graphics and communications. In short, it will be a complete integrated environment. I plan to include similar features as those currently found in other "Works" programs. Works may debut in 1996 - plenty of things will keep me busy 'til then. GETTING STARTED ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ Installation ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Installation can be accomplished manually or with the included program, INSTALL.BAT. Manual Installation ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Decide where to store Edit, perhaps in C:\EDIT. Ä> For example, to create C:\EDIT type: MD C:\EDIT and copy the contents to that directory. Ä> Or copy the diskette's contents to an existing directory of your choice, like C:\DOS. Update your PATH, if necessary. PATH, found in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, enables your computer to execute First ADE Edit easily. Automated Installation ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Decide where to store Edit. Like the above example, perhaps in C:\EDIT. To install Edit type: INSTALL C:\EDIT. Ä> The program will create the directory, copy Edit into it, and, optionally, update your path, which the computer searches to find Edit. Ä> The install file makes a grand attempt to update the PATH. In case things don't work, which they may not if you load Microsoft Windows or a DOS Shell from the AUTOEXEC.BAT, you can update the PATH yourself. With First ADE's Edit (of course) add a semi-colon and the new directory name (e.g., C:\EDIT) to the end of the PATH statement. For example: PATH=C:\;C:\DOS;C:\WINDOWS;C:\Edit ^^^^^^^^ CHARACTERS ADDED After Edit is installed per the instructions, simply type: FAE (First ADE Edit) anywhere in the computer to enjoy your new text editor. STARTING First ADE Edit ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ DOS is not case sensitive. To DOS "edit" looks the same as "EDIT"; the same applies to "c:\windows\win.ini" and "C:\WINDOWS\WIN.INI". Typing any combination of these upper and lower case characters will obtain the desired results. Edit is started by typing the command FAE plus any command-line parameters. Ä> An example would be: FAE autoexec.bat config.sys. Files from anywhere on the computer can be started by adding the file's complete path. For example, if you are in the C:\UTILITY directory and the PATH contained the directory where Edit is located then: Ä> FAE c:\windows\win.ini c:\windows\system\sys.ini c:\ndos.ini would start Edit and open those three files. The last file, in this case C:\NDOS.INI, is left on top to show how many files Edit was able to load. KEYBOARD AND MOUSE CONVENTIONS ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ Keyboard Hotkeys and Conventions ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ Ä> AltÄ1, means to press and hold down the Alt key and then press the 1 key. After doing this a window with that number, if it exists, will be brought to the front. Ä> AltÄF, is similar to the AltÄ1 explained above. AltÄletter combinations in Edit act on menus. Typing AltÄF in the English menu system opens the File menu, typing N would then open a blank screen to start a new document. The same command can be written as: AltÄF, N. Ä> F2, and AltÄ, Ctrl-, and ShiftÄ variations of the function keys (often called Hotkeys), perform actions on a global basis in Edit. These options are listed in the Menus beside other commands. Pressing F2 will immediately start the File Open dialog. AltÄF2 will save the current document, etc. See the menu to find out which function keys/Hotkeys are assigned to which actions. The function keys/Hotkeys in Edit are more logically arranged than any other word processor I've yet seen. Per computer standards, F1, and its variations, are assigned to the Help function. Also, the Hotkeys are arranged alphabetically on each Menu. The "Bare" F-key is used always first, and then Alt-, Ctrl-, and finally Shift-. Except for the Options Menu, each menu is assigned its own function key, they are overviewed below: Associated Function Key Menu ³ or Hot Key ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÅÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ File ³ F2 Edit ³ F3 Search ³ F4 Format* ³ F5 Options**³ F6 Window ³ F7 Help ³ F1 * Menu not implemented in Edit, function key is reserved for upcoming release of Word. ** Function key not applicable to types of commands available, function key is reserved to maintain consistency. Ä> AltÄX, (eXit) is a global command which will exit from Edit, prompting you to save documents, if necessary. Mouse Conventions ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ Ä> Clicking with the mouse is accomplished by positioning the mouse cursor over an item and pressing the left mouse button once. Ä> Dragging with the mouse is accomplished by positioning the mouse cursor over an object; pressing and holding the left mouse button down, moving the mouse to the new position; and releasing the left mouse button. First ADE Edit's PIECES AND PARTS ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ Edit's screen has more operationally active surfaces than you might initially realize. Three areas are most obvious. The Menu Bar ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ The Menu Bar sits at the top of the screen. It holds the Menu Items which access Edit's many options. You select the Menu Items by clicking on them with a mouse or using the AltÄletter combination described above. The Desktop ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ The Desktop occupies the middle of the screen. The windows holding the documents occupy this space. Numerous surfaces are available here. If selectable, the surfaces here are available only with a mouse. However, the same effects are possible with the keyboard. (LEGEND: Button Name; Menu Combination; Hotkey) [Square] Close Window Button; AltÄF, C; Ctrl-F2 ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Pressing this button closes the window. If the document has been modified you are prompted to save it. Title ÄÄÄÄÄ You can not modify the Title unless you save the document with a different name. A new document's Title states "Untitled." To move a document's window, click on the title and drag the window to its new position. Window Number; AltÄW, N; F7 ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ The Window Number is the number used with the AltÄnumber combination described above. [Double Arrow] Zoom Button; AltÄW, Z; AltÄF7 ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ This button toggles between a maximized and reduced window size. Each window in Edit starts maximized, you must resize the window before this button is active, because the maximized and reduced size are initially equal. Vertical and Horizontal Scroll Bars; Page Up, Page Down, Home, End ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ The Scroll Bars move you quickly through the document and show your position in the document relative to the entire document. Clicking and dragging the button found between the two arrows will speed you through the entire document. The same overall actions are possible with the four keyboard keys listed above. Modification Indicator (Snowflake) ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ This symbol, found in the lower left corner, indicates if a document has been modified in any way since being opened. Saving the document removes the Snowflake symbol. X:Y Position Indicator ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ The current cursor position is reflected in these two coordinates. The origin is the document's uppermost top left corner. ÄÙ Sizing Handle; AltÄW, S; CtrlÄF7 ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Clicking on and dragging this symbol will resize the window in two dimensions. After resizing a window, Zooming it by any method becomes possible. The Status Line ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ The Status Line sits at the bottom of the screen. It holds the Status Line Items listing a few of Edit's options and provides Hints to Menu Line Items. You select the Status Line Items by clicking on them with a mouse, or using the Hotkey combinations listed. NAVIGATING IN First ADE Edit ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ From the example in "Starting First ADE Edit" above, you can switch to WIN.INI by typing AltÄ1. This brings the first window opened to the front of the screen. SYS.INI is accessed by typing AltÄ2, and NDOS.INI is brought back to the front by typing AltÄ3. Repeatedly pressing F7 accomplishes the task, too. Window Menu options allow you to resize and move the windows to have multiple documents visible simultaneously. If two or more windows are visible you can also click on the one you want to make it the active window. REGISTERING First ADE Edit ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ First ADE Edit is being distributed as Shareware. It is not a free program. If you use Edit for more than 30 days, you should register it by sending $5, or an equivalent amount of your local currency, to register the product. A good indicator if you should register a program is this rule of thumb: If you need to accomplish a task and you immediately think of Shareware product, then you should register that product. $5 isn't expensive. Edit is priced to encourage registration. The money goes to purchase manuals and advanced compilers, increasing my abilities to produce better software. You'll be placed on the mailing list informing registered users of upcoming releases. Also, I'm curious to know how widely Edit is distributed. If you want an updated edition of the Edit direct from me, the price is $15. The price covers software registration, the diskette and mailer, and postage. You receive an authentic First ADE Edit program diskette (sans nag screen), a bound copy of this User's Manual, AND a FREE major software update, when available. First ADE Edit's MENU ITEMS ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ On the Menu Bar are six options: File, Edit, Search, Options, Window, and Help. See "Keyboard and Mouse Conventions" on page 5 for details on accessing these Menus. File ÍÍÍÍ The File Menu contains the following items: Open, F2 ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ This option starts a dialog allowing you to open an existing file 64kB (65,535 chracters), or smaller, for editing. New ÄÄÄ This option immediately opens a blank screen for entering data. The data can be saved, before or when exiting, or abandoned and lost. Save, Alt-F2 ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ If a new file is saved for the first time, a dialog starts allowing you to name it. The name must conform to DOS 8.3 standards. Read your DOS manual for the details. The file can be saved into another directory or onto another disk by typing the entire disk and/or path name. If the file has been saved at least once, selecting Save saves the original file with a .FAE extension, and writes the changed file over the original file. Save As ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ This option saves the file with a new name. It can be saved into another directory or onto another disk by typing the entire disk and/or path name. If the file has never been saved, it is written to disk now. Close, Ctrl-F2 ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ This option closes the current file. If the file was modified in any way, the Modification Indicator (Snowflake) is displayed by the X:Y Position Indicator, and an Information Box will ask if you want to save the changes. You can answer YES, to save the changes; NO, to abandon the changes; or CANCEL, to cancel the Close process and not close the file. Print, Shift-F2 ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ This option starts a dialog similar to the Open dialog. You are prompted to select a file saved on disk. The file is then copied to the printer. To print a modified file, save the file and then print it. To preview changes save the file with a temporary extension, like .TMP, and then print the temporary file. The temporary file can be deleted later. Change Directory ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ The Change Directory Dialog changes where First ADE Edit automatically looks for files. The directory can either be typed into the space provided, or, the cursor arrows can be used to navigate the Directory Tree representation. Pressing enter on one of the directories or double clicking with the mouse shows the directories under it. Navigation can continue until the proper directory is found. At the top of the list is Drives. All available drives are listed here. Selecting one of the drives allows navigation to on that drive. DOS Shell ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ This option allows "Dropping to DOS" so that DOS commmands can be executed. The amount of memory available is reduced by the amount used by First ADE Edit. Most programs will be able to run in the space available, but some extremely large programs may not. To return to First ADE Edit type EXIT. Do not type FAE -- type EXIT. Exit ÄÄÄÄ This option quits First ADE Edit. If the file was modified in any way, the Modification Indicator (Snowflake) is displayed by the X:Y Position Indicator, and an Information Box will ask if you want to save the changes. You can answer YES, to save the changes; NO, to abandon the changes; or CANCEL, to cancel the Exit process and not Exit First ADE Edit. Edit ÍÍÍÍ The Edit Menu contains the following items: Undo, F3 ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ This option undoes a deletion or insertion. For example, if you delete a sentence with the Delete key, and then immediately realize it was the wrong sentence, this command will save you. It is most useful when using the Backspace or Delete keys. However, the Undo command only undoes the VERY LAST action. If you delete an entire paragraph with the delete key you can undo the deletion, but if you then type just one character, your chance to undo the deletions is lost. Copy, Alt-F3 ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ To use Copy you must first select the text you wish to copy, using the keyboard or mouse, see "Keyboard and Mouse Conventions" on page 5, and before selecting Copy. The text is copied into memory. Move the cursor to where the text is to be inserted and then select Paste. The text can be copied to the same window or another open window. The copied text is inserted immediately and all text after the insertion point is moved over/down. Cut, Ctrl-F3 ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Cut is similar to Copy, above, with one major difference. After copying the text to memory, Cut removes the original text from the edit window. The text can then be Pasted elsewhere or "abandoned" in memory. This command can be reversed with the Undo command. Paste, Shift-F3 ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ This command Pastes information Copied/Cut into memory to the insertion location, indicated by the cursor. The pasted text is inserted immediately and all text after the insertion point is moved over/down. This command can be reversed with the Undo command. Show Clipboard ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ The Clipboard is the holding location for anything Copied/Cut to memory. To examine the Clipboard's contents before Pasting, or to edit them before Pasting, select this command. The Show Clipboard window can be treated like any window, but it has no window number. Search ÍÍÍÍÍÍ The Search Menu contains the following items: Find, F4 ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Find locates a string of text in a document. Type the text to search for and then choose Case Sensitive or Whole Words Only, as necessary. Case Sensitive searchs and finds only the matches with the exact upper and/or lower case characters you've specified. It may be used in conjunction with Whole Words Only. Example: Find will not locate 'Edit' if you've specified 'edit'. Whole Words Only finds only whole words, not portions within words. It may be used in conjunction with Case Sensitive. Example: Find will not locate 'Edit', 'editors', 'with' or 'Nit-Wit' if you specified 'it'. Search & Replace, Alt-F4 ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ The Search & Replace dialog not only finds text, like Find but also replaces text found with other text you supply. The Search & Replace dialog has Case Sensitive and Whole Words Only options, like Find, and also offers Prompt on Replace and Replace All. Prompt on Replace asks before replacing text matching the search criteria. This option is on by default. Replace All tells the program to search for all instances of the search string and replace them if found. It is advisable to use Prompt on Replace when using Replace All, as many possible matches may exist. Search Again, Ctrl-F4 ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Search Again is a quick way to search for the next occurance of the search string when using Find. Options ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ The Options Menu contains the following items: Language ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Selecting Language allows you to change between three different menus systems, Deutsch, English, and Francais. Selecting a language changes the Menu Bar and Menus and Status Line Hints to that language. Try it, you can always go back to your favorite language. It is impossible to change "to" the current language, so it is always disabled. Selecting another language, for example Deutsch from English, changes the menus to Deutsch, enables English and disables Deutsch. The computer must be configured at start-up to use a particular language's keyboard. The First ADE Edit can not recognize/change keyboards simply by changing the program's language -- this must be done at start-up. See your DOS manual regarding KEYBOARD.SYS and KEYB.COM and enabling your computer to use various keyboard configurations. Tools ÄÄÄÄÄ -> ASCII Table, displays all 256 ASCII characters and the character's Decimal and Hex values. -> Calculator, four function calculator with percent, ñ function, and a scientific calculator-like number editing. -> Calendar, a monthly calendar which is good until at least the year 3000. -> Puzzle, the slide puzzles you knew and loved as a kid. Window ÍÍÍÍÍÍ The Window Menu contains the following items: Next, F7 ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ The Next options displays the next available edit window or tool, like the ASCII Table. Pressing it repeatedly cycles throught the windows/tools. Zoom, Alt-F7 ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ The Zoom option toggles between a maximized and reduced window size. Each window in Edit starts maximized. You must resize the window before this button is active; the maximized and reduced size are initially equal. Size / Move, Ctrl-F7 ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ This option will resize the window in two dimensions or move it without using a mouse. After resizing a window, Zooming it by any method becomes possible. Tile ÄÄÄÄ Selecting Tile displays each window in approximately equal "tiles" on the desktop. This is an excellent way to get a grasp of which files are open, or to copy text between windows using the Copy/Paste options, described above. A window can be selected by clicking on it with a mouse or by using the Alt-Number technique. Cascade ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Cascade displays the windows by "cascading" each successive window over the preceeding window. Cascading shows the window's title, making it easy to determine which files are open. A window can be selected by clicking on it with a mouse or by using the Alt-Number technique. Resolution ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ This option toggles between 25 and 50 lines per screen resolution. Help ÍÍÍÍ The Help Menu contains the following items: Getting Started ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Is a quick intro to starting First ADE Edit and the types of files First ADE Edit is ideal for editing. Keyboard ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ This screen lists the primary keys strokes used when operating First ADE Edit. Many other keys are available, of course, but these are the most common. Mouse ÄÄÄÄÄ The mouse can be used in several ways. This screen quickly tells how to use the mouse to select Menu Items, blocks of text, and the destop's own quick-access menu. Help on Help ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ A Hint is available for every Menu Item, in each language. Pressing, F1, when implemented, often offers more in-depth help. About ÄÄÄÄÄ The First ADE Edit's important information is presented on this screen. It lists the program name, copyright, and version number, programmer's snail-mail and e-mail addresses, and registration information.
