CallInfo Version 1.0 Copyright (c) 1994 Code Blue Computer Systems, Inc. COMMON QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS QUESTION: Why do I see "ERROR" after "Initializing modem ..." when I run CallInfo? ANSWER: Your modem did not respond correctly to the the initialization string. There are several reasons why this may occur: 1. Double check the serial port and initialization string you are using to call CI. The initialization string should at least reset your modem to factory defaults (AT&F) and enable caller id support. You can find the correct modem command to enable caller id by looking in your modem manual, by contacting your modem dealer, or by contacting your modem manufacturer. Many modems use "AT#CID=1" or "AT%CCID=1". 2. If you have an external modem, make sure it is plugged in and turned on. 3. Make sure your serial port and modem are working as you have them configured by typing "ECHO AT&FD>COM?", where the "?" is replaced with the serial port your modem is defined as. (If your modem is on COM1, type "ECHO AT&FD>COM1".) You should hear a dial tone from your modem if it is working. To turn the dial tone off, type "ECHO AT>COM?" where the "?" is replaced with your serial port number. 4. Make sure you have no other software loaded which is already using your serial port. Currently CallInfo will share a serial port with very few other communication packages. Many fax packages have problems co-existing with CallInfo. We will be adding support for other communication packages in a future release. Until then, use your communication packages separately. 5. Make sure there are enough delays in the initialization string. Modems usually need at least 3 seconds of a delay between commands. Delays may be added to the initialization string using the tilde (~) character. Each tilde represents a one second delay, so if you need a three second delay insert "~~~" where appropriate. 6. Some modems require a few seconds to power up before the initialization string. Try this by adding "~~~" before the first letter of the initialization string. This will allow a three second delay after accessing the modem, and before sending anything to it. QUESTION: Why do I see question marks instead of a phone number, like "(???)???-????", on the popup display? ANSWER: CallInfo was unable to retrieve the caller id phone number from your modem. There are several reasons why this may occur: 1. Make sure you have caller id service installed from your local telephone company. CallInfo cannot "see" what the phone number is if the telephone company does not send it. 2. Do not answer the telephone until the second ring. The caller id information is sent from the telephone company between the first and second rings. Allow enough time for this to happen before answering your telephone. Also ensure that nothing else is answering the telephone, such as a fax machine, answering machine, other telephone equipment, or other people. 3. Make sure your modem supports caller id. Your modem must be able to retrieve the special signals that the phone company sends. QUESTION: Why do I see "NOT AVAILABLE" before the telephone number on the popup display. ANSWER: This is because CallInfo attempted to, but was not able to, retrieve the name of the calling party from the caller id information. There are several reasons why this may occur: 1. See the previous question, the answer also applies to this question. 2. Make sure your telephone company is sending the name of the caller along with the phone number. Some telephone companies consider this an additional service and may charge extra to deliver the name. QUESTION: Why do I see "OUT OF AREA" instead of the telephone number or name? ANSWER: The call is coming in from an area where caller id is not supported. As of the release of CallInfo, caller id is not available nationwide. Until this happens, your local telephone company will provide caller id information only for calls placed within your local area. Check with your telephone company for the area in which they report caller id. QUESTION: Why do I see "BLOCKED" instead of the telephone number of name? ANSWER: The party placing the call to you has blocked their number or name from being sent through the telephone company. The telephone company will not send caller id information from a party who requested it not be sent. After answering the telephone, you may wish to request that they remove this block so that you will get the caller id information the next time they call. QUESTION: Why do I see the message "Is not loaded."? ANSWER: You attempted to unload (/U) CallInfo when it was not loaded in memory. QUESTION: Why do I see the message "Could not be removed from memory."? ANSWER: CallInfo could not be unloaded because other memory has been allocated after you loaded CallInfo. You cannot unload CallInfo if another TSR has been loaded after it, or if you are in a DOS shell program. Make sure CallInfo was the last program loaded and your are at the DOS prompt when you attempt to unload it. Code Blue Computer Systems, Inc. PO Box 11476 Alexandria, VA 22312 (218) 233-4476
