ChatBox version 3.2 Copyright 1991-1995 Yandell Custom Software ChatBox is a PCBoard Split-Screen Sysop Chat and Page utility. The Sysop can initiate a chat or the caller can page. Split screen modes feature Vertical or Horizontal screen partitioning (Sysop's choice). The paging tones are configurable i.e. ringing telephone, beeps, or silently flashing screen. Three different paging periods are allowed each day. Split-screen chats permit simultaneous typing between the Sysop and caller which greatly enhances on-line chat sessions. There are MANY other features which QUICK.DOC does not cover which enhance ChatBox operation. The instructions for these features are located in CHATBOX.DOC and FEATURES.NEW. QUICK.DOC is not intended to replace CHATBOX.DOC. QUICK.DOC allows you to QUICKLY install CHATBOX and see its powerful, high quality features. You may then decide if you wish to completely install ChatBox using the detailed information contained in CHATBOX.DOC. -[ Step 1 ]---------------- Create a directory called CHATBOX and extract all of the contents of CBOX32.ZIP there. ALL ChatBox files must reside in the same location. -[ Step 2 ]---------------- Run: CBSETUP.EXE Select (1) "Edit ChatBox configuration parameters." Edit these parameters as needed, using the F1 help at each parameter as a guide. Press ESC to return to the CBSETUP main menu. Select (3) "Edit ChatBox paging times and sounds." Edit these parameters as needed, using the F1 help at each parameter as a guide. Press ESC and return to the CBSETUP main menu. Press ESC again and save the configuration file. When modifying CHATBOX.CNF, use ONLY the enclosed CBSETUP.EXE. * MORE STEPS ON THE NEXT PAGE * -------------------------------------------------------------------- Page 2 ChatBox (Quick DOC) Page 2 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Installing ChatBox to use "O" to Page Sysop ------------------------------------------- The following step-by-step instructions will replace PCBoard's built-in (O)perator page function with ChatBox. This requires PCBoard 15.1 or later and the OPAGE.PPE file (enclosed). (1) Run PCBSetup. (2) Select "B File Locations". (3) Select "B Configuration Files". (4) Place the highlight bar on "Name/Loc of Default CMD.LST File". (5) If you have not configured this parameter yet, you will need to refer to the PCBoard documentation and configure this PATH and FILENAME now. (6) Press F2 to edit the CMD.LST file. (7) The following setup screen will appear: Charges Per PPE/MNU File Specification -or- Command Sec Minute Use KeyStroke Substitution --------- --- ------------ ------------------------------- #) O 10 0 0 C:\CHATBOX\OPAGE.PPE * Command : Place the letter O here as shown above. * Security : Enter security needed to use the the O command. * PPE/MNU File: Enter the FULL LOCATION of YOUR ChatBox directory followed by the OPAGE.PPE file as shown above. Note: You may use another command other than "O" here, but this is not recommended. (8) Press ESC and answer Y to save the new CMD.LST file. (9) Exit PCBSetup. (10) Make sure OPAGE.PPE is located in the same directory with all other ChatBox files. (11) Restore the (O)perator command in your PCBoard main menu if you had previously removed it for earlier versions of ChatBox. Also see section 2.3 on page 7 of CHATBOX.DOC. OPAGE.PPE is the PCBoard 15.1 (and later) file which loads ChatBox. OPAGE.PPE only loads a configuration file named CHATBOX.CNF so be careful that this is the file you edit when using CBSETUP.EXE. If you are still using PCBoard 15.0, contact the author's BBS for an OPAGE.PPE file that will run with PCBoard 15.0. If you have different CMD.LST files for any conferences, you will need to configure the "O" command in them also. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Page 3 ChatBox (Quick DOC) Page 3 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Installing ChatBox to use F10 for Sysop to Start a Chat ------------------------------------------------------- The following step-by-step instructions will install ChatBox so that the Sysop may initiate a chat with the caller using ChatBox. See CHATBOX.DOC if you would rather start a chat with another key, such as one of PCBoard's "SHIFT-F#" (shifted function) keys. You may initiate a Sysop chat by pressing the F10 key. These step- by-step instructions must be followed for a successful installation. (1) Run MKPCBTXT.EXE. (2) Enter PCBTEXT preceded by its location. If you are told the file was not found, you are not entering the correct information. (3) Select F3 (jump to record). (4) Enter 333. This is the PCBoard chat "greeting" text. (5) Edit PCBTEXT record #333 as follows: !C:\CHATBOX\SYSCHAT.PPE /F10 ---------------------------- Start the entry with an exclamation mark, followed by the FULL LOCATION of YOUR ChatBox directory, followed by the SYSCHAT.PPE filename, followed by /F10 as shown. >> You MUST place the /F10 parameter as shown above when installing the SYSCHAT.PPE in MKPCBTXT record #333. (6) Press ESC to save the changes and exit the PCBTEXT program. (7) Repeat the above steps for all language versions of PCBTEXT that you carry. NOTE: A change was made in PCBoard 15.0 which stopped the F10 chat key from working when the Sysop is logged-on locally. Someone must be logged-on to your system from remote (by modem) to test the PCBoard F10 key, regardless of whether or not ChatBox has been installed.
