Copy Thank you for your interest in Tape-it Lite from Imation the drag and drop software that provides tape-driveletter support on the Windows desktop. Tape-it Lite assigns a drive letter to your tape drive, so you can work with it much the way you'd work with your floppy drive or hard drive. Store, retrieve and access files from your tape drive. If you haven't already done so, you soon will be playing and working with Tape-it Lite, getting familiar with its look, feel and functionality. This Getting Started Guide to Tape-it Lite should tell you everything you need to know about installing and working with this software for Windows 95 and Windows 3.1 or everything you haven't already figured out on your own! We hope you'll like Tape-it Lite so much that you'll want to purchase the full version of Tape-it from Imation. Upgrading to the full version of Tape-it will give you the complete functionality of this powerful yet easy-to-use program. Specifically, the full version allows you to perform full and partial drag-and-drop backups of your drive(s); to save files directly to tape from within any Windows application; and to interact with the tape drive at hard drive speed. The Lite version enables you to copy files to tape but not to back up, and to open files from but not to save directly to tape. You can order the full version of Tape-it from Imation at $59.95. Or you can get the program at a nice discount even free! when you purchase qualifying 3M Minicartridges, now by Imation. For details, see the mail-in certificate at the bottom right of this Guide. Subhead Here's what you can do with Tape-it Lite Subsub Drive letter support The tape drive is recognized as a standard device on the Windows desktop, and is assigned its own drive letter (as your hard drive is called drive C, for example). From Windows Explorer or File Manager, you can see the files you've saved on tape. Subsub Copy files directly to tape You can now copy files and directories to your tape drive: simply make your selections and drag them to the tape drive. Subsub Open files from tape Within any Windows application, you can now open files directly from tape. Subhead Here are THE EXTRA THINGS you can do with the full version of Tape-it Subsub Full and incremental backup Back up your entire hard disk by simply dragging and dropping it onto your tape drive icon. Or back up only those files that have changed since the full backup. You can also back up selected folders and files by dragging and dropping. Subsub Drag and drop file management Copy files, folders or directories by dragging and dropping them to your tape drive icon, using the left mouse button. Subsub File saving to tape Save files to tape directly from within any Windows application, using the Save As command. Subsub Fast file copying to tape Dramatically speed up tape operations by writing all your files to tape at the same time. The files are temporarily stored in a secure staging area of your hard drive before you choose to write them to tape. This enables hard-disklike performance when dragging and dropping to tape. Subsub Easy file recovery Recover a file or group of files simply by dragging the files from your tape drive back to your hard drive. Subhead System requirements Subsub Hardware and media IBM PC or compatible (386 or higher) Travan or QIC compatible floppy, parallel port, IDE or SCSI tape drive (see the drive compatibility list on the reverse for currently supported drives) 3.5" diskette drive Preformatted tape cartridge Subsub Running Windows 95 Hard disk with 20 MB of free space 8 MB or more of RAM Subhead Installing Tape-it Lite for Windows 95 Copy Note: Before installing Tape-it Lite, make sure your tape drive is connected and a new preformatted tape (or a scratch tape one you don't mind erasing) is available for use during installation. Please review the "Things to keep in mind" section of this Guide, on the other side, before installing Tape-it Lite for Windows 95. Also, for instructions on how to install Tape-it Lite if you have a floppy accelerator card, see the README.TXT file. 1. Insert the Tape-it Lite diskette. 2. From the Start button, click Run. 3. Type A:SETUP (or B:SETUP if the diskette is in B drive) and press ENTER. 4. Follow the on-screen installation instructions. Be sure to read the README.TXT file for important information. You must reboot your computer to complete the installation. 5. After rebooting, you will be asked to run the Tape-it Lite Diagnostic program to check for proper functioning of your tape drive. Insert a scratch tape into your tape drive. Start the Diagnostic program once your tape drive has stopped moving. 6. Upon successful completion of the Diagnostic, you are ready to use Tape-it Lite. Congratulations! Your tape drive has now become a drive letter, accessible from My Computer or Windows Explorer. You can work with your tape drive much as you would work with your floppy disk. Subhead Uninstalling Tape-it Lite for Windows 95 Copy From the Windows 95 Start button, select Settings, then Control Panel. Double-click the Add/Remove Program icon. In the Install/Uninstall Properties tab, select Tape-it Lite from Imation. Select Add/Remove. Select "Yes" in the Uninstall Tape-it Lite dialog box. Subhead Using Tape-it Lite from Imation with Windows 95 Subsub 1. Launching the program Open My Computer or Explorer. There will be a new tape icon for your tape drive next to the new tape drive letter. Access the Tape-it Lite pop-up menus by clicking with your right mouse button on this icon or on the tape icon on your taskbar. Subsub 2. Erasing your tape Before any tape is used with Tape-it Lite, it must first be erased by Tape-it Lite. Select your tape drive icon with the right mouse button and choose Erase from the pop-up menu. This gives you the opportunity to name the tape. Note: QIC-80 tapes must be preformatted by the manufacturer before they can be erased by Tape-it Lite. Subsub 3. Copying files to tape Copy Select files or directories, then use the right mouse button in Explorer to drag them to your tape drive icon. Select Copy Directly to Tape from the Tape-it Lite pop-up menu. Subsub 4. Opening files from tape Copy You can open files on tape just as you open files on your floppy disk, hard disk or CD-ROM. In Windows Explorer, simply double-click on the file(s) in the drive letter assigned to your tape drive. If you are using a Windows application and wish to open a file from tape, go to your File menu, select Open, then the drive letter representing your tape drive, then the file. Note: the icon for the tape drive may appear as a CD-ROM drive or disk drive when you use the File/Open menu from a Windows application. Subhead Drive compatibility Copy Tape-it Lite Software is certified to work with the following drives, listed by manufacturer. Subhead Things to keep in mind before you install Tape-it Lite for Windows 95 To be safe, if you have other backup software on your system, you should uninstall it to avoid conflict with Tape-it Lite. For more details concerning co-existence of Tape-it Lite and other backup applications, please see below. Subsub Using Tape-it Lite with a backup program Attempting to operate a backup program while Tape-it Lite is running may cause both programs to operate incorrectly, since both programs are attempting to control the tape drive at the same time. Please take the following actions depending on the type of tape drive that you have: If you have a SCSI or IDE tape drive, Tape-it Lite will operate as intended, but any backup software on your PC may experience unpredictable results. If you experience problems with the backup software, we recommend that you uninstall the conflicting backup software. If you have a floppy tape drive, Tape-it Lite and the backup software may conflict with each other. For certain backup software applications, when these applications are launched, Tape-it Lite will notify you that you need to disable Tape-it Lite to properly operate the backup software. In this case, you do not need to uninstall the backup software. If you have a parallel port tape drive, Tape-it Lite and the backup software may conflict with each other. We recommend that you uninstall the backup software. Subsub Drive letter assignment Install Tape-it Lite according to the directions provided. If Tape-it Lite properly detected your tape drive and successfully passed the Tape-it Lite Diagnostic, review the new assignments for your drive letters. If you can no longer find your CD-ROM drive letter or a previously mapped network drive, or either of these devices has been assigned a new drive letter, reassign the drive letter given to your tape drive. To do this: 1. Right click your My Computer icon and select Properties. 2. Select the Device Manager tab. 3. Double-click the CD-ROM/Tape Drives icon. 4. Double-click your tape drive icon, which will be a small CD-ROM icon. 5. Select the Settings tab. 6. Select the drive letter that you wish to be assigned for your tape drive: if "T:" is not assigned, we recommend setting the Start drive letter and the End drive letter to T. Otherwise, pick any letter that has not been previously assigned. Subsub Using Tape-it Lite with an IRQ sound card, scanner or network adapter If the Tape-it Lite software cannot find your tape drive during installation, the most common reason is an interrupt conflict with another device such as a sound card, scanner or network adapter. Most parallel ports are set to IRQ 7 (I/O 378) for LPT1 and IRQ 5 (I/O 278) for LPT2, and these are the settings recommended for use with Tape-it Lite. Since many sound cards use these interrupts too, there can be a conflict. To verify that this is the problem, check to see whether IRQ 7 or IRQ 5 is being used. To do this: 1. Right-click the My Computer icon and select Properties. 2. Select the Device Manager tab. 3. Double-click the icon for the type of device you are checking (such as sound card). 4. Double-click on the device icon. 5. Select the Resources tab. The Interrupt Request and Input/Output range settings will be displayed, along with any device conflicts. If there is a device conflict, please reassign the IRQ for the conflicting device according to the manufacturer's documentation. Subsub Upgrading Tape-it Lite's normal driver to enhanced for parallel port drives If you installed Tape-it Lite using the normal driver for your parallel tape drive, you may try using the enhanced driver for higher performance if your computer successfully supports EPP (enhanced) mode. Consult your computer manual if unsure. You will need to uninstall Tape-it Lite. Make sure you have a scratch tape on hand, since the reinstall process erases the tape when running the Diagnostic. Select the Add/Remove Program in the Control Panel. At the end of the uninstall process, the dialog will say that some components may not have been removed. Ignore this message; Tape-it Lite was successfully removed. Now, re-install Tape-it Lite and select Enhanced mode. If you encounter problems, repeat the uninstall process and reinstall in Normal mode. LICENSE AGREEMENT This is a legal agreement between you ( "Licensee") and Imation.
