Tape-it Lite for Imation, Windows 3.XX Release Notes Application Specific Issues: EZPhoto: Problem: When I try to add photos from my CD-ROM or tape drive I get an EZ Photo application error. Solution: You must access the files through your hard disk icon in EZ Photo's Add Photos to Gallery dialog box. Do not use the CD-ROM icon to access files on CD-ROM or on tape. Cause: This problem occurs when you have a CD-ROM and a tape drive. Since Tape-it Lite appears as a CD-ROM in Windows you have two CD-ROM type drives. EZ Photo can deal with only one CD-ROM. This is currently a known limitation with EZ Photo. Performance Issue(s): Jakarta Multimedia Adaptors: Jakarta's installation modifies the SmartDrive device line of your CONFIG.SYS file with the /U switch (Device=C:\smartdrive.exe /U). The "/U" switch disables the cache to your CD-ROM drive which reduces Tape-it Lite's performance. By removing the switch "/U" from the device line you will optimize Tape-it Lite's performance. Recommendations for Windows users with CD-ROMs: To increase tape drive performance: -SmartDrive (SMARTDRV.EXE) should be installed in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file -SmartDrive (SMARTDRV.EXE) should be loaded after your MSCDEX line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Optimal Memory Configuration To optimize your computer's memory, you may want to run a memory manager application such as Quaterdeck's QEMM or Microsoft's MEMMAKER after installing Tape-it Lite. Potential Problems: Tapes: Tapes must be preformatted! Since Tape-it Lite has no reformatting feature do not bulk erase your tapes. Use Tape-it Lite's erase feature to prepare your tape cartridge(s) for use with Tape-it Lite. Diagnostic Program: If you need to run the diagnostic program and have files that need to be written to tape, use a scratch tape (a tape you don't mind erasing) to perform the diagnostics because all information will be erased on the tape cartridge that is used to perform the diagnostics. Upon completing the diagnostics, you can re-insert the tape cartridge that has all of your backup files and use Tape-it Lite normally. Multiple Boot Systems: Tape-it Lite's installation program will not modify your AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS if it detects a multi-boot configuration. However, Tape-it Lite's installation program makes a copy of your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files, makes the necessary changes to run Tape-it Lite and names them AUTOEXEC.PG and CONFIG.PG. These files are then placed in the Tape-it Lite installation directory. Error Handling: Tapes with Decompress errors: If you have a tape with a decompression error MSCDEX will interpret the error as a "Drive Not Ready" error instead of a "Read Error" because MSCDEX always maps errors into a "Drive Not Ready" error message. Also, retries from MSCDEX are ignored, so there is no tape activity. Changing Your Drive Letter: This section describes how to change the drive letter for a Tape-it Lite tape drive. First, a word of warning: if you have a CD-ROM drive attached to your computer, changing the drive letter for your tape drive will change the drive letter for your CD-ROM drive. If you have any CD-ROM games, network device drivers, applications, or other software which expects to find your CD-ROM or device driver at a particular drive letter, you probably do not want to change the drive letter because it will cause that software to malfunction! At the very least, you will probably have to reinstall those applications. To change the drive letter, it is necessary to tell MSCDEX to use a particular letter. This is done with the "/L" option. First, open your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. It should contain a line like the one below: C:\WINDOWS\MSCDEX.EXE /S /M:8 /D:MSCD001 /D:PGTAPE00 The "/L" option tells MSCDEX to use the listed drive letter as the first CD-ROM drive. MSCDEX will use consecutive drive letters for each additional CD-ROM drive. With Tape-it Lite, the tape drive is treated as a CD-ROM drive, so you can't have a CD-ROM drive as drive "D", and a Tape-it Lite tape drive as drive "T". Second, change the MSCDEX line above so that it includes the "/L:S /V" options, like this: C:\WINDOWS\MSCDEX.EXE /S /M:8 /D:MSCD001 /D:PGTAPE00 /L:S /V The "/V" option simply causes MSCDEX to "verify" that it found the listed drives during boot. Use it to make it a little more obvious if there is a problem. That's it! Your CD-ROM is now drive letter "S" and your tape drive is "T". Save your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, and reboot your computer. When you run File Manager, you should find that your tape drive is now the letter you prefer!
