PC Potions. @INTRODUCTION Thank you for trying the Tape Librarian! The Tape Librarian system's programs provides you with all the tools necessary for you to create and maintain a catalog of the contents of your backup tapes. You will be able to easily find and restore any file on any tape. No more leafing through outdated handwritten logs or searching endlessly through each tape's volume directories. With the Tape Librarian you can master your backup tapes and create a true archival system which is easily assessable through your computer. @REQUIREMENTS The Tape Librarian requires an IBM AT compatible (386 or 486 recommended) PC with a hard drive, DOS 3.0 or above, 640K of RAM, and a CGA, EGA, or VGA monitor. A mouse is optional. Data files require approximately 1K per 3 Megs of backup. Your data files may be larger or smaller depending on the size and number of files backed up. The Tape Librarian requires that you are using either a Colorado Memory System's Jumbo or Trakker 120 or 250 tape drive, and that the backup tapes were created with CMS's TAPE.EXE program (versions 2.54 through 4.05, are currently supported). CMS's TAPE.EXE program MUST reside in the same directory as the Tape Librarian. PowerTape is supported for TAPE.EXE version 4.05 only. @FEATURES The full Tape Librarian system, Version 3.0, provides you with the following capabilities; * Cataloguing a tape's volumes' contents (one, range, or all) * Deleting a tape's volumes' contents from the catalogue files (one, range, or all) * Printing a listing of the contents of a catalogued tape's volumes (one or all) * Locating all occurrences of a path or file name on all catalogued tapes * Restoring a specific path or file from any volume, or range of volumes, of any catalogued tape. * Renaming a tape (if TAPE.EXE V4.0x is being used) * Cataloging from a batch file. As you can see the capabilities of the Tape Librarian are quite extensive. @INSTALLATION Installation of the Tape Librarian is relatively easy. The first step is to identify the drive and directory in which CMS's TAPE.EXE program resides. Probably C:\TAPE. Attach to this directory. Place the Tape Librarian disk in your A floppy drive. Type "Copy A:\*.*" at the DOS prompt and press ENTER. After the DOS prompt has returned type "TL" to start the Tape Librarian system. During the initialization of the Tape Librarian system, it checks for existence of CMS's TAPE.EXE program. If TAPE.EXE is not found you will receive a warning message. If you receive a warning message, please ensure that the correct file is present and that it is located in the same directory as the Tape Librarian system. The program will also check for and validate the system's KEY and DATA files. The first time you run the Tape Librarian system you will receive a series of messages indicating that the KEY and DATA files could not be found. Please follow the instructions to create the files. If, in the future, you receive these messages again you should quit out of the system and investigate the cause of the warnings. When all Catalogue Files have been successfully validated you will be presented with the Main Menu Screen. The Main Menu will display four choices; Catalog, Search, Print, and Exit. Main Menu items may be accessed by pressing the tab/arrow key until the desired choice is highlighted, and pressing ENTER to select. Main Menu items may also be selected by pressing the appropriate ALT+ letter keys or by clicking on them with the left mouse button. PLEASE NOTE that throughout the Tape Librarian pressing the RIGHT mouse key is the same as pressing the ESC key and that all items may be selected by positioning the cursor over them and pressing the LEFT mouse button. @USING TAPE LIBRARIAN @Menu Bar Options @FILE Selection of the File Menu Bar option will display a drop down menu with the following choices: @Support Info Displays information on how to obtain technical support for the Tape Librarian System. @About Displays information about the Tape Librarian System and It's Magic! Typing "EXIT" will return you to the Tape Librarian. @Set Max Finds When searching for a path or file each successful match (called a "FIND") is assigned a Find#. Due to memory and time limitations the maximum number of finds allowed for a search is limited by the Tape Librarian System. The default value is 300. This option allows you to raise or lower the Find limit. Please be VERY careful when raising this number. If set too high, rather nasty things may happen to your memory and disk files! IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT ALL HARD DRIVES BE BACKED UP BEFORE IMPLEMENTING THIS OPTION!! @Set Data Path By default the Tape Librarian's key, data, view, and print files reside in the same directory as the Tape Librarian. This option allows you to specify a different path for these files. @Help Displays the on-line documentation for the Tape Librarian. @Main Menu Options @Catalog Choose this option to catalog a tape's contents by volume, a range of volumes, or all volumes. @Search Choose this option to search the cataloged tapes' volumes for a path or file. Once you have found the desired path or file, you may then, optionally, continue and restore selected "Finds". @Print Choose this option to obtain a print-out of a cataloged tape's contents. @Exit Software Exits the Tape Librarian System. @Catalog Menu Options @Tape ID Select this option to enter the name of the tape to be catalogued. The Tape ID is limited to 11 characters. Inbedded spaces are allowed as are upper and lower case characters. @Rename This option is only available if you are using TAPE.EXE version 4.0x. Select either "Yes" or "No". @Volume(s) Select this option to enter the volume, range of volumes, or "A" for all volumes. @GO! This option will appear after valid entries are made for the above. Selection of this entry will start the tape cataloging processes and display the Additional Parameters and Catalog Tape - Status/Activity window. If you enter a password parameter it must be valid for all volumes being cataloged. Additional parameters are NOT edited. Before cataloging a tape the Tape Librarian will check for previous entries for the Tape ID/Volume(s) selected. If found you will be asked if you want to delete the previous entries. Selecting "No" will abort the cataloging process. The Status/Activity window will display the processing as it occurs. When completed you will be asked if you want to catalog another tape. Selecting "No" will return you to the Main Menu, while selecting "Yes" will return you to the Catalog Menu. @Exit to Main Selection of this option will return you to the Main Menu. @Search Type Options @Path Select this entry to enter a path to be searched for. @File Select this entry to enter a filename to be searched for. @Exit to Main Selection of this option will return you to the Main Menu. @Path Entry Window This window is displayed when the "Path" option is selected as the Search Type. After a valid entry is made you will be asked if you want to include sub-directories. Select "Yes" if you want the files in sub- directories to be included in the file count. @File Entry Window This window is displayed when the "File" option is selected as the Search Type. You may enter either a specific filename or a supported wildcard. Only wildcard filenames using the "*" are supported. The Restore process is not available after a wildcard search. @Searching for... This window is displayed after a valid path or filename has been entered. @Search Results (Finds) This window is displayed after a successful search for either a path or a specific filename. It's format will vary slightly depending on the Search Type selected. Use this window to select the item(s) to be restored. @Restoring Files @Restoring From A Path Search The Search Results window displays the results from a successful path search. The Finds are displayed in a scrollable section of the window. For each Find the Find#, Tape ID, Volume#, Volume Date, Volume Time, and the # (of) Files are displayed. The #Files tells you either how many files are in the directory itself, or in the directory and it's sub-directories, depending on whether or not the "Include Sub- directories?" option was selected in the Path Entry window. You may choose to restore either a single Find or a range of consecutive Finds on the same tape. Along the button of the Search Results windows there are five buttons; First (TAG)/(UNTAG), Last (TAG)/(UNTAG), View, Restore, and Abort. @First (TAG)/(UNTAG) Use this button to tag or untag the first find to be restored. @Last (TAG)/(UNTAG) Use this button to tag or untag the last find to be restored. @View Selecting this button will cause the View File Display window to be displayed. @Restore Selecting this button will start the restore processing and display the Restore Options window. @Abort Selecting this button will return you to the Search Type selection menu. @Restore Options (Path Search) @Drive Enter the drive letter you want to restore to. @Path Enter the path you want to restore to. @Include Files in Sub directories? Selecting "Yes" will restore files in sub directories to the search path. Selecting "No" will restore only the files in the search path. @Command Conformation? Selecting "No" will suppress the display of the Command Conformation Window when a range of finds have been selected for restoration. @Over-Write On? Selecting "Yes" will allow any existing files to be over written during the restoration process. @Additional Parameters Enter any additional parameters that may be required. See you TAPE.EXE manual for additional information. This entry is NOT edited! @Continue Select this button to start the restoration process. @Abort Select this button to return to the Search Type window. @Tape Request The Tape request window sounds a tone and requests that you place the correct tape into the tape drive. Choosing not to continue will return you to the Search type window. @Command Conformation Window The Command Conformation window displays the details of the restoration about to be performed. Please check it over carefully! Consult your TAPE.EXE manual if you have any questions or doubts. Selecting not to continue will return you to the Search Type window. @Restoring From A File Search The Search Results window displays the results from a successful file search. The Finds are displayed in a scrollable section of the window. For each Find the Find#, Tape ID, Volume#, Volume Date, Volume Time, and the file's path/info are displayed. You may choose to restore only a single Find. Along the button of the Search Results windows there are three buttons; View, Select, and Abort. @View Selecting this button will cause the View File Display window to be displayed. @Select Selecting this button will start the restore processing and display the Restore Options window. @Abort Selecting this button will return you to the Search Type selection menu. @Restore Options (File Search) @Drive Enter the drive letter you want to restore to. @Path Enter the path you want to restore to. You may include a new file name, as well. To clarify (I hope), NOTE THE FOLLOWING EXAMPLES CAREFULLY!!! File Backed up as: \BPATH\FILENAME.EXT Default path is DPATH New Path Entry Restored to: (blank) \BPATH\FILENAME.EXT \ \BPATH\FILENAME.EXT \NEWPATH\ \NEWPATH\FILENAME.EXT \NEWPATH\NEWFILE.EXT \NEWPATH\NEWFILE.EXT \NEWFILE.EXT \NEWFILE.EXT \NEWPATH\ \NEWPATH\FILENAME.EXT \NEWPATH \NEWPATH NEWFILW.EXT \DPATH\NEWFILE.EXT The safest procedure is to enter a complete path & filename and after restoration move the file to where you want it. @Include Files in Sub directories? When you perform a search on a file name, every occurrence of the file name will result in a Find number on the Find Screen. Sometimes that may result in several Finds that belong to the same volume on the same tape, but in different sub directories. If this is the case the Tape Librarian will tag these multiple occurrences on the Search Results window as follows: the first occurrence will be marked with a down- arrow, the last occurrence with an up-arrow, and any in-between with an asterisks. Why? Because if TAPE.EXE is executed with the "/S" (sub- directories) parameter, ALL occurrences of the file name, in all sub directories, will be restored- even if you've specified only one Find number. Your choice in the Include Files in Sub Directories? option determines the setting of the "/S" parameter. If you choose YES, then the restore command will be executed with the "/S" parameter, but if you choose NO, only the Find number you specified will be restored. The safest choice is to say NO. To sum up- selecting "Yes" will restore all occurrences of the file in all sub directories in the tape volume selected, while selecting "No" will restore only the file in the selected path. (Clear as mud! Right?) @Command Conformation? Selecting "No" will suppress the display of the Command Conformation Window when a range of finds have been selected for restoration. @Over-Write On? Selecting "Yes" will allow any existing files to be over written during the restoration process. @Additional Parameters Enter any additional command parameters that may be required such as passwords (/L), error log filename (/B), or 486 cache control (/Y). @Print Menu Options @Tape ID Select this option to enter a Tape ID. If the Tape ID entered is not cataloged then you will be presented with an option to view the list of the cataloged Tape IDs. @Volume(s) Select this option to enter either a tape volume or "A" for all volumes. @GO! Select this option to begin the Print processing. This option will only appear after a valid Tape ID and Volume have been entered. @Exit to Main Selection of this option will return you to the Main Menu. @Print Options/ Status Window @Print Filenames? Selecting "No" will suppress the printing of filenames, only path names will be printed. @Print File? Selecting "Yes" will print the print file created to the printer attached to LPT1. @Delete [filename]? Selecting "Yes" will delete the print file. This option is only available if you selected to print the print file. @Cataloging a Tape from a Batch File For those of you who backup at night or during off-hours from a batch file, you can catalogue your tape automatically. The Tape Librarian system contains a program file named TL_CTBAT.EXE which will catalog your tape immediately. Add the following lines to your backup batch file: C: (or the drive on which the Tape Librarian system resides) CD\[Tape Librarian directory name- usually TAPE] TL_CTBAT.EXE (parameter list) Valid parameters are: /V=[A=All, U=Update, Volume #, or Volume Range X-Y] (The "V", "A", and "U" must be uppercase. If omitted all volumes will be cataloged. If used it must be the first parameter.) /T="[Tape ID]" (The "T" must be uppercase. Required.) /L="[password]" (The "L" must be uppercase. Optional.) /Y or /-Y (The "Y" must be uppercase. Optional.) All parameters must be separated by a space and occur in the order listed above. Examples: To catalog all volumes on tape "test1" TL_CTBAT /T="test1" or TL_CTBAT /V=A /T="test1" To catalog new volumes on tape "test 2" and disable a 486's cache TL_CTBAT /V=U /T="test 2" /Y To catalog volumes 3 through 7 on "tape #4" which were backed up using a password of "temple" TL_CTBAT /V=3-7 /T="tape #4" /L="temple" Please note that, on any error, the TL_CTBAT.EXE program will pause until a key is pressed and that spaces are still allowed in the Tape ID. The TL_CTBAT.EXE program must reside in the same directory as CMS's TAPE.EXE program along with the Tape Librarian data and key files. You can not rename a tape when cataloging in batch mode.
