For me vfw1.1a did not help. I had to go to vfw1.1d and that solved my problems. There is an old file released a long time ago that patched Ultima 8 to work with the GUS for music. It is called U8GUS.Zip. Unzip the file and run the Bioforge install program. Choose General Midi for music and exit. Copy the A16GUS.DLL file from the U8 patch and rename it AILXMI.DLL. Run loadpats and then run the game. Note: The patches mapped out in the .ini file are for U8. I get better music if i run loadpats using the default ini file. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Apr 1995 00:11:14 +0100 From: Piet van Oostrum Subject: Computer Music bibliography There is a bibliography on synthesizers, midi, computer and electronic music that I have collected from various sources. It is *supposed* to work with any windows compatible sound card with a DAC. Unfortunately, the sound comes out very choppy, and bits of sounds which have played keep playing over and over again. The sound passes the game's own self-check program. It does not seem to matter whether I use a 16 bit or an 8 bit DMA channel. The bus speed is set correctly (I had had simmilar problems with an old soundblaster a few years ago because of this). I've seen a sound card that is of interest to me, it's the Montgomery (not sure how its spelled) from Turtle Beach. Its an add-on card with up to 8MB of ram for sampling and all the wave-table patches are in rom. I was wondering if anyone as it running with the GUS? And if so, does the add-on card take over the GUS, or can you uses them together as 2 individuel soundcards. I would also want to know the sound quality of the Montgomery. Shoogagoogagunga! You have to do it from an Amiga using MESSYDOS, CROSSDOS or similar. After mailing the author of the list, he told me that after version 1.2 the AIL support was posibbly broken. So, the cuestion now is : How can I do if I have a version that won't work ? I thought I had deleted all the Gamewave drivers, and edited the system.ini file properly, but when I look at the midi mapper I find the drivers for the Gamewave are still there, and I cannot seem to change them. Can anyone help?<<< Have you tried the MIDI Drivers option in Recording Session and set it to Extended-level setup? Also, do you get a "start up" sound when you enter Windows? If you do, you probably just haven't set the MIDI drivers option in Recording session. If you DON'T get a start-up sound, try checking your Midi Mapper applet under the control panel, as well as the Drivers applet and make sure the GUS stuff is there. If not, I'd try re-installing the GUS software. :> P.S. How the heck do I do the "quote" thingies. I get midi out to my Roland keyboard from both DOS and Win95, but can't get it to input. This could simply be related to Win95; however, I (may) have tried a DOS program as well to the same result (this was a few months ago). At some point in the distant past (two years ago?), MIDI IN worked just fine on my 386SX/25 system under Windows 3.1. I have since upgraded to a P60 and, as mentioned, Win95 Beta 347. How can I test the Midi-port IN function under DOS? How should it be cabled (midi-in to midi-out on keyboard, etc.)? If the hardware *is* broke, how do I get my GUS fixed? I can resolder the chip myself if it is a standard part. I have a copy of win Kids Desk that's slick (but slow), and permits dos apps to be launched from dos so that sound works. Windows exits and the program runs. They get windows to return to Kids Desk at the same spot when you exit the dos program. This works fine with sbos and the old megaem. The new megaem refuses to run because it still detects the presence of windows. I had always thought that Kids Desk did its work through winstart.bat or something, but, alas, Norton Utilities show a little piece of windows still in memory.
