February 8, 1993 Advanced Gravis FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: TORONTO: AED VANCOVUER: AED OTC BBS: GRVSF ADVANCED GRAVIS SETS THE DIRECTION IN PC SOUND WITH ULTRASOUND(tm) Advanced Gravis has concluded that wave table synthesis is the future of sound in the PC industry. According to Grant Russell, President of Advanced Gravis "Sound for personal computers will migrate quickly from the current technology to wave table synthesis. This is the technology now accepted as the minimum standard for music synthesis in the professional music industry but has not been widely available to PC users due to its cost. Advanced Gravis has developed a significant leading edge in bringing this technology, including 3D sound, to the consumer at an affordable price. Advanced Gravis is committed to the objective of making Ultrasound Technology the premier sound card technology for the IBM PC for business and entertainment applications." Advanced Gravis is aware that Logitech has announced their SoundMan 16, IBM PC sound card. The Logitech sound card is not based on Advanced Gravis' UltraSound Wave Table Synthesis Technology. Logitech's sound card is based on FM synthesis technology which is still utilized by most major sound card manufacturers. While FM synthesis is not generally acknowledged as being capable of producing professional music synthesis like the Gravis UltraSound card, it is today considered a standard for PC entertainment market. Although Logitech holds a substantial ownership interest (currently 43% with rights to increase to 64%) in Advanced Gravis, according to David Reid, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Advanced Gravis, both Logitech and Advanced Gravis make independent decisions as to how their products are marketed and sold. Logitech is not obligated to market Advanced Gravis products. All distribution terms are negotiated on an arm's length basis, and continue in place as long as both parties are satisfied with the arrangement. Advanced Gravis maintains an independent sales and marketing channel and views Logitech as an important additional distribution channel for the products they determine to carry in their line. Logitech will continue to market the complete line of Advanced Gravis products including UltraSound in Europe and in other selected accounts. According to Pierluigi Zappacosta, President of Logitech, "We are pleased with the performance and growth of Advanced Gravis as a leader in PC-based entertainment products. Advanced Gravis' leadership and technological innovation with products such as UltraSound provide today's industry with powerful and trend-setting tools facilitating long-range market success."
