====================================================================== Title: Boot Block Recovery - Intel Batman's Revenge Motherboard ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Filename: BATRVREC.TXT Author: Terry Slade, Micro Firmware Technical Support Revision: 02/11/98 ====================================================================== The boot block procedure is normally used only if the BIOS has become corrupt or erased or if the wrong BIOS has been flashed into the chip, usually resulting in a blank screen on powerup. The procedure requires a valid recovery disk, normally created during installation of a flash BIOS upgrade (such as our I5HS15). A recovery disk can be downloaded from our FTP site at: ftp://ftp.firmware.com/recovery/batrevrd.exe This self-extracting ZIP file contains a self-extracting diskette image used to create a recovery disk with BIOS version 1.00.08.AF2. A recovery disk can also be created by downloading the 1.00.xx.AF2 BIOS from Gateway 2000's web site or Intel's FTP site and copying the files contained in the archive onto a bootable diskette. (NOTE - this does not work with version 1.00.10.AF2T). The boot block recovery procedure will not work with any non-Intel CPU installed. . 1. Turn system off 2. Move boot-block jumper J6J2 (labeled RCVR) to pins 1-2. You may also need to move the flash chip write-protect jumper, J7J2. Pins 1-2 enable write, pins 2-3 prevent writing to flash chip. 3. Insert recovery disk. 4. Turn system on. In a few seconds, the diskette drive light will come on. A few seconds later, the speaker will beep once or twice. Diskette access light will remain on, there will be nothing on display screen. When process is finished (30 to 60 seconds) the speaker will beep twice (if using Intel recovery disk) or 4 times (if using Micro Firmware recovery disk) to indicate process is finished. 5. Turn system off, remove diskette. (If diskette is left in drive and allowed to boot - the flash chip will be wiped out and process must be repeated.) 6. Move jumper J6J2 back to pins 2-3 You may wish to move jumper J7J2 to pins 2-3 (flash chip write-protect) Note - with I5HS15 installed, the flash chip must be left unprotected since the PnP BIOS or a PnP OS (WIN95) may need to write to the ESCD area in the flash chip. 7. Turn system on, setup CMOS. . ====================================================================== (C) 1997, 1998 Micro Firmware, Inc.
