TITLE: WordPerfect for Windows Too Slow When Launched PRODUCT: WordPerfect 5.1/5.2 for Windows Problem WordPerfect for Windows opens too slowly. Concept Several factors can affect the speed of a Windows application. The number of applications running when you open the application, the configuration of system resources such as memory, and utilities that affect the operating environment of your computer are a few of these factors. The options you select as preferences within WordPerfect for Windows can also affect the speed of opening the program. Solutions One or more of the solutions may be needed to increase the speed of opening WordPerfect for Windows. Decrease the number of Windows applications which are running before you launch WordPerfect for Windows. Increase the file handles in the CONFIG.SYS file. For example, change FILES=20 to read FILES=30. (Microsoft recommends at least 30 file handles be allocated.) In order for the changes to take effect, you will need to restart your computer after you modify the CONFIG.SYS file. Decrease the SMARTDrive command values in the CONFIG.SYS file. For example, change DEVICE=SMARTDRV.SYS 2048 1024 to DEVICE=SMARTDRV.SYS 512 256 or DEVICE=SMARTDRV.SYS 256 128. For more information on using SMARTDrive, see the Microsoft Windows User's Guide, Optimizing Windows (Chapter 13), Using SMARTDrive. If you are using a program which condenses data as it is stored on the hard drive, redirect temporary files to a hard drive where information is not automatically condensed. (Note: this does not apply to data compression performed by hardware such as "RLL" drive controllers.) Minimize program groups in the Windows Program Manager so fewer icons display. Deselect the Ruler, Button Bar, and vertical and horizontal scroll bars as display defaults in Preferences. The Ruler and the Button Bar are found under the View menu, and the scroll bars are found under Preferences in the File menu.
