TITLE: CONFIG.SYS: SMARTDRV.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT: SMARTDRV.EXE Values Decreased PRODUCT: WordPerfect 5.1/5.2 for Windows Problem You can't start WordPerfect for Windows because of insufficient memory, or WordPerfect operates very slowly. Concept Microsoft's SMARTDrive reduces the time your computer takes to search for data on its hard disk. The application reserves a portion of random access memory (RAM), called a disk cache. Your computer stores frequently used data in the disk cache. When the specified Smartdrive values in the CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT files are high, the portion of RAM for the disk cache is larger, making less RAM available for WordPerfect for Windows. If you are running Windows 3.0, SMARTDRV.SYS will be in your CONFIG.SYS file. If you are running Windows 3.1 or DOS 5.0 or higher, SMARTDRV.EXE will be in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Solution Decrease the SMARTDRV.SYS values in your CONFIG.SYS file or the SMARTDRV.EXE values in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file by dividing each value in half until you have an optimum setting. For example, if the values are DEVICE=SMARTDRV.SYS 2048 1024 or SMARTDRV.EXE 2048 1024 you may change the line to read DEVICE=SMARTDRV.SYS 1024 512 or SMARTDRV.EXE 1024 512 Common values include: 1024 512, 512 256, and 256 128. Use a DOS text editor to make the change. See Also Appendix Q: Troubleshooting in the WordPerfect 5.2 for Windows reference manual
